Under the Silver Lake (2018)
The MuSiC is unbelievable...
Absolutely incredible music and visuals. Every time it comes on cable I find myself watching through to the end, just to take in the aesthetics. The plot is pretty obscure, but the film is a feast for the eyes and ears.
Dave Made a Maze (2017)
Boundless creativity...
I don't know how I missed this one. It might be THE most creative film I've seen this year. If you consider yourself an artist, this one's pretty much a must-see. Be prepared for some seriously campy dialogue though. Most of the lower scores here came from folks who didn't love the script. In my head, Dave Made a Maze is 5% about plot, 95% about the artwork. Seriously, I've never seen anything like it.
I know that I should be taking points off for weird dialogue, but this kind of boundless creativity deserves no less than 10 stars.
Panic (2021)
Almost okay.
If you are older than 15, this series probably isn't for you. Good for wholesome fun, but I expected more teeth.
Nine Films About Technology (2021)
Damn, this was kind of brilliant.
I stumbled into this series, but it turned out to be the best thing I've seen in months! Pretty much every episode is smart, concise, well-written, and seriously funny in one way or another. It tackled some super-heavy subjects with a deft hand and a modern eye. The story about the outhouse blew my f#$&ing mind.
Made for Love (2021)
Maybe my favorite new series...
This might be my favorite new series. It's hilarious, creative, and deep all at the same time. The humor is offbeat and sharp, not to mention really dark. The writing is on point and well thought out. The entire production is visually beautiful, every single scene is artistic. The music is killer, the acting is flawless, and the CGI is dope AF. I never thought I would be able to enjoy a show with Ray Romano, due to his previous roles. But this, I like. This is the kind of series I could watch over and over again.
Hot Summer Nights (2017)
Decent film, incredible Soundtrack!!
I liked the film... but damn did I LOVE the SOUNDTRACK. Some of those songs were such deep cuts that I found myself reaching for Shazam over & over.
I know it's strange to base a review around a soundtrack, but I get so tired of the repetitive / unoriginal music from mainstream films. When music is done correctly like this, it should be recognized. Props to whoever put the tunes together here, way to think outside of the box.
The Good Lord Bird (2020)
Expert tongue-in-cheek entertainment
I watched ALOT of television in 2020, and this show was definitely one my favorites of the year. Smart, funny, insightful, and visually amazing.
The Boys (2019)
This is how to write a superhero series
While most superhero projects are color-by-number snoozefests, this one thinks way out of the box and comes out winning. The CGI was amazing, and the music was on point.
Your Honor (2020)
Blame the writers, not the kid...
... but yeah, the kid was bad. Just don't blame the actor for the sins of the writers.
Snowpiercer (2020)
Snowpiercer
Actually, I kinda think Daveed Diggs is perfect for the lead role... I dig his understated style here, and have become pretty invested in the character. I'm confused as to why earlier reviews are so critical. The whole series has been surprisingly on point!
See (2019)
One of the most creative shows on television...
This might be my favorite show from all of last year. The filming is absolutely beautiful, the acting is thoughtfully nuanced, and the whole idea is incredibly thought-provoking. The sets and costumes are as realistic and well-thought out as it gets. Best of all, SEE is mind-blowingly creative. The world they created for us is expansive, original, and deeply textured.
Almost every film critic based their reviews on comparisons to Game of Thrones, which wasn't quite fair. If SEE had come out this year, I guarantee it would have received a different reception. Thanks to the quarantine, I'm on my 4th go-around with this series... and every time I find something truly fascinating to sink my teeth into. If you're looking for a deep dive into an apocalyptic alternate world, you won't do much better than this one.
Punk Like Me (2006)
Nope.
I love punk rock, but it turns out I'm just not that interested in 5 rich corporate-type dudes and 90 minutes of frat-boy humor.
