Fröken Sverige (2004)
someone lost the script?
Don't watch this movie. There's no plot, no character depth and the dialog is awful and makes all participants feel dumb. As for the script I can't remember the last time I saw a story less inspired. They could just as well have been developing the plot on the spot. It also feels chopped up in different parts that just doesn't come together. It's actually hard to find anything positive to say about this movie. There's little chemistry between the actors and the scenes feel very acted as opposed to genuine. Working your way through the whole movie is a matter of discipline and endurance.
As a final note I've seen many people want to compare this movie to "Fucking Åmål" (aka "Show me Love"). If I was Lukas Moodysson I would feel insulted by the movies even being compared.
Honey (2003)
another movie to the record
I've seen many less entertaining films than this. Replace Alba and the music & dancing though and I've seen maybe two or three.. As a movie this is really a disaster. The plot is extremely predictable and acting for the most part far from good. Also the fact that there may only be half a dozen people on this earth that can pull off lines like "your flavour's hot!" doesnt contribute (and Jessica for sure isn't one of them). I read someone before commenting that the video director character didnt seem to have depth. I'd say his looking down and fiddling with his electronic gizmo all the time made him look somewhat unsure of himself, which added to his all evil act just about made him the most complex character seen here. So if you think you'd enjoy the music, or if you just want an excuse to watch miss Albas pretty face for a moment, or you're a hardcore Disney fan you might bear the 90 minutes of Honey show. Otherwise you'll see it for what it is; a great display of a movie executed with zero ambition.
Dark Angel (2000)
much of "could-have-been"
I absolutely love the setting of this series. The "after-the-pulse" scenario isnt too far out, as is the idea of transgenic individuals etc which in fact probably will be a reality in the future even if we might have to live without the super-strength of Max and her X-series buddies.
Anyway, this series had lots of potential. And I'm not just talking about the face of Jessica Alba. It really could have gone somewhere but it had some serious issues that never were addressed. First, the dialogue is a disaster. Or as much so, the way it was being delievered. I'm mostly thinking of the lead actress herself here even if I think the director had an equal part of it. The thing is, everyone seems to have gotten the orders never to smile or even get that glimpse in the eye that could have justified those incredibly over cool lines that were delivered all over the place and all the time. Being over 13 it often gets pure comedy even when that's the least thing that was aimed for, on any level. Furthermore, the script, especially in the later episodes when the show had become very unsure of what it was and throwed in all kinds of attempts to save itself (including a guy in a halloween suit shooting slime and going by the name of "Gossamer") half the time should never had left the writing room. It's strange to imagine that the writers had so little inspiration from, to me it seems, such an inspirational theme. In conclusion it's a shame they hadn't learned from buffy and similar shows that their potential demographic was much broader than the preteen/early teen audience they were aiming for.
But well, mistakes were made, shows were cancelled, and we will never know what might have been
so now, as Max and I like to say; (with a serious impression and without a single tad of self awareness) "I gotta jib"
Getting There (2002)
this movie is just nothing
the only amusing thing about this movie is to see the both Full House twins grown up. Thats amusing for two minutes. The rest is just plain awful. I highly doubt there was a script for this film. never been so easy set a 1/10
Crossroads (2002)
poor plot, overly dramatic & sentimental
First I have a soft spot for the road trip movie idea. Easily brings that young rebellion feel to a film. But when that is said, this movie is all but good. It takes on as many "teen issues" as possible and then deals with them in hand holding and overly sentimental Oprah-scenes over and over. The beginning of the film is the worst though with the extreme high school stereotypes in the "popular student" and the "studying student". It also contains one of the worst scenes of the film with "Lucy" and her lab partner who have agreed to loose their virginity together. I suppose its supposed to be funny, but its not. Well at least you get to see Britney up close. So what about the pop princess acting skills? Very varied I'd say. She overacts every here and there and her meeting with her mom is another low water mark in that area. But then again she handles the motivated sentimental scenes with ease. Her little talk with her father in the beginning is quite ok and later her talk with the guy in the film after meeting her mom is pretty brilliant. So to sum up on that she's not without acting skills but she overacts like seldom seen and that partly is to blame on the director directing a first-timer. Further on in the movie the dialogue generally feels very unspontanious as does alot of dramatic scenes that are much fuss over nothing. Well that was about all, I'll give it a 2/10. If you're particularly in love with these cheap teen flicks, or if you in fact are a young little teen, or if you just want a chance to watch Britney you might enjoy the movie, at least a little. Otherwise you have 99/100 odds of randomly finding a better choice.
The Mangler (1995)
poor film
not much of a horror movie. A mean old man (reminding of the Penguin off Batman) runs a laundry factory. surprisingly cheesy story for a stephen king based film and with a low budget nothing can save this movie from getting washed right down the drain. rating: 3/10 (man I should have given this a 2) only saved by the Vedder accent of the main character.
