Briganti (2024)
An interesting Italian period drama centered around Briganti
Somehow unusual for the Italian cinema, a period drama like this one is interesting but not without flaws.
I particularly enjoyed the pace, the acting, the music, cinematography, and the beautiful locations (Puglia, Italy).
It is evident the idea of adding to a kind of basic storyline (hunt for a lost treasure) a bit of flavour with a bunch of different characters, and a With the people for the people philosophy (mix between la revolution and Jan's bandits).
The screenplay and the characters are probably the least interesting elements. There's not enough screen time to give everyone the characterization deserved and the it is also missing a bit of XIX century grandeur with all the story centered around a small villge in the south of Italy (probably too complex to show big cities like Naples or Palermo).
Having said that the drama remains in my opinion worth watching not because explain a part of Italian history that is frequently underestimated but because it is fun, well acted and, in the end, entertaining.
The Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker (2023)
Disappointing tale from a reality producer point of of view
I was hoping this documentary would tell a compelling but sad story but I was wrong.
I'm a true crime fan and I've seen countless episodes of different series and I was really taken aback about this one.
The point is that not only is lacking in giving the viewers clear evidence or clearly explaining what happened, both during the moment that lead up to the "hero" situation or the murder. What is lacking is empathy for everyone involved in this sad story. The interviews with tv researcher and reality producer are terrible.
We are talking about months before the murder and the lack of kindness, empathy, understanding, for a person that was homeless and catapulted to nation fame in a few moments is as clear as the sun in the sky and it does not make for a good thing to see.
All considering, the lack of comprehension and simpathy by this people, who only wanted to profit from the star of the moment, make his behaviors almost understandable. Especially if there were mental issues involved.
In general there is no one talking on Kai side (apart from a brief interview with a cousin), no one trying to paint a larger picture, to understand how it must be difficult living on the streets and how the media and the viral cycle could destabilize a human being.
In the end it's shallow and lack of empathy.
The I-Land (2019)
Haters gonna hate
Ok. Before killing me let me explain my point. Yes, the dialog is sometimes bad, other times hilarious and never really inspiring. The flashbacks are awful, with a gleaming light that seems really soap opera style. The story is a bit rush, with a lot of flaws and it definitely seems that with the last 2 episodes at 37 min, the whole group in charge decided to wrap it up and leave thing as they are. And yes, especially indoor shot feels very cheap, way too cheap for 2019.
But. There are a few but.
One is Natalie Martinez. Good acting and, well, she tries, she definitely tries to do the best she can to save the group. Metaforically and not.
Acting is not so bad i general I must admit.
And guys, it's an easy show to watch, maybe takes a couple of days and with lush jungle, a bit of mystery and some nice girls I wouldn't be so judgemental.
