Sir Drone (1989)
the most accurate film about starting a lousy band...
1 January 2004
When I was in highschool, I found a copy of Sir Drone at the old video store in my hometown. The place was run by the family members of the Screaming Trees so they had a lot of bizarre punk rock movies and an awesome cult section. When I rented this movie, I was just getting started with my own talentless punk band so alot of the stupid stuff that goes on here was pretty relevant to the things I was trying to do. The plot involves a couple of young punk rockers attempting to form a band, I believe, to score with chicks and get beer or something like that. The band is ridiculously bad which is funny because Mike Watt is a really talented bassist. The movie looks like a home movie that was (I'm assuming) shot entirely in the SST Records office. It was directed by artist Raymond Pettibon who did most of the band Black Flag's flyers and cover art (his brother, Greg Ginn, was the guitarist for Black Flag.) Anyone who's not into the trashy low-fi aspects of punk should steer clear of this one because it's super cheap but I definitely recommend it to any up and coming punker slobs like me who probably won't realize until later that the entire film is just making fun of them.

Drew-Buddy!
14 December 2003
The first time I saw this film I enjoyed it quite a bit. After all, there's gratuitous violence, some nudity and Eddie Furlong. Of course, the original is far superior (Eddie can't stack up against Miko Hughes as a murderous toddler) and actually, most of this film is pretty damn bad. But it is fun and the bully kid is hilariously lame (as movie bullies tend to be.)

What I couldn't figure out was why the zombie dad had to call everyone "buddy" all the time, then I realized he was probably Canadian (there is a Canadian flag hanging in his son's room.) Although I guess he must have relocated to Maine or wherever to start a new child-abusing rabbit-raising life for himself. Oh yeah, the dude from ER is really awful in this movie, he's just a huge nerd who should be spanked with moonrocks. His acting is bad, too.

Highlights of the film: zombie dad eating breakfast, motorcycle-to-face scene and ghostdog with hooters.

What a great freakin movie!
3 April 2003
Yeah, okay, so I had to see this at an advance screening because I can't go see movies at Sundance. I just now learned that it won some award? Cool. Good for them. This movie was damn great. I never got to read a whole issue of American Splendor so I wasn't sure what I was getting into but I was blown away by how great this movie was. The approach to the story is new as far as I know. They ommitted a few details from Harvey's life I would have liked to have seen, (like the fight between Harvey and Crumb.) But other than that, man... Surprisingly optimistic but not phoney like someone who would call Pulp Fiction or Forrest Gump a "cult movie." A true classic and lets hope that after the elitist art house jerks and oscar-cocktail party yuppies get through with it, the rest of the world can see it too. Robert Williams has a cameo. Cool.

Till Human voices wake me when it's over...

Warning: Spoilers
This movie was boring, contrived and predictable, did I mention boring? Holy crap, what a waste of the talented cast, all 6 actors.

The story is this:(Spoilers ahead) Mopey psychiatric professor Pearce goes to the hospital to see his dad who dies, right there, he just dies. Okay, whatever. He then finds out that he has to bury his dad in his old home town so he goes there. Meanwhile, we see flashbacks of his life as a early-teen and his Tiny Tim-esque playmate to whom we all KNOW something bad will happen. Obviously this character won't last, she's got leg-braces, she doesn't "fit in" she reads poetry and oh yeah, SHE'S AS BORING AS THE REST OF THE MOVIE. Now listen, I appreciate a good art house bore fest as much as the next guy but come on, WHO CARES?! These characters are all boring tired cliches. The "story" is so very dull and uneventful. The attempted symbolism is misplaced and overused anyway. The plot is entirely circumstantial.

I can't believe I've used this much space talking about this awful movie. But I guess it's relevant, after watching the 100 minute movie, you say, "I can't believe I spent so much of my time watching this movie where nothing happens."

The arthouse version of Patch Adams. blehck.

It's about time!
23 October 2001
After all the problems that George Romero had with getting this released, I was concerned that it might never come out. Luckily it was finally released, (direct to video, but what are you gonna do?) After being so built up, I was worried that the movie would disappoint me, but it did not. However, the film has it's faults, 1. The film was rather anti-climactic, this is the thing that bugged me the most, but the rest of the movie was entertaining enough for me to slide and the very end scene was so very amusing... 2. The characters are so annoying! I guess they're supposed to be, but Peter Stormare(as Miles Styles) is so over-the-top I kept crossing my fingers that he was the next victim. 3. The song at the beginning of the end credits is SO out of place, it almost ruined the otherwise awesome end scene, Ska-Punk does not belong in this type of film,(nor anywhere else for that matter.) The better aspects of the film were, 1. The characters were well rounded, (even the annoying ones,) which is nice in these Gladiator-wins-best-picture times. 2. Nina Garbiras is very attractive and seeing her naked was nice. 3. The fantasy scenes were great, it's good to see that George Romero hasn't lost any of his "edge." 4. Despite this being the "new" Misfits lineup, the songs weren't too bad, (I wonder what became of the "Scream" video George Romero was supposed to direct for the Misfits?) Oh yeah, and did I mention that the film is well-acted, well filmed and very enteraining. I give it a 7/10. Romero fans check it out, I hope there are alot of us.

Witchcraft VI (1994 Video)

It delivers as promised.
23 October 2001
I enjoyed this film, sure it's not the best occult film out there, hell, it isn't even a very good occult film, but it does work as a good softcore flick in that it delivers the goods (i.e. ample female nudity) and doesn't mess around with taking itself too seriously. Something that is good to find in these sorts of films, all too often, I try to rent some video, hoping to see gratuitious skin and instead am stuck watching some horrible attempt at "suspense," and left with little to no actual skin, ugh. I was rather relieved to catch an amusing flick with healthy doses of nudity. I also liked the stupid cop scenes because, well, I think cops eating donuts are funny. Check it out if you're a fan of the series or an Andy Sidaris fan. I give it 8/10 stars!

Man, this movie rules,
23 October 2001
This movie is just plain great, It's a funny, campy, B-grade Pseudo-Sci-fi T & A flick that is just one of the most entertaining films I've ever seen. What's strange is that this film hits on the topic of teenage sexuality pretty well, if you ask me, (or as well as this sort of film could.) Not to mention that there are many topless scenes, which is always a plus. Also, the concert scene was just so out there... I wish I could go to a concert like that, Man, It's just so great, see for yourself. I give this film a 9. If you like fun sexploitation flicks, this is about as much fun as you can have.
