The Frame (2014)
Another Winans masterpiece
I was hooked on Jamin and Kiowa Winans' work after watching INK which remains my absolute favorite movie...period! The Frame is close though...so many sureal moments shared with INK...intelligent,thought provoking, moving, stunning visuals and solid acting by a talented cast. I find myself sometimes wondering what Jamin and Kiowa would achieve with a large studio budget...but it would be remarkable indeed if they were to exceed what are works of excellence on the low budgets they had. These movies and their short films in my opinion firmly place these extraordinarily talented filmmakers at the absolute top of their profession. I have seen NO other films that come within a country mile of these folks work..My admiration for what they have achieved is total. I bought the download of this as soon as it was available from their website years ago but due to working abroad I had forgotten about it on my home computer. Tonight i found it, watched it and was spellbound. Just sublime. I look forward to more by these amazing filmmakers. There are many 'Hollywood' directors out there that could learn a lot by watching Jamins' direction..
Spectral (2016)
Solid full metal near future military sci- fi
This movie surprised me in that the usual attempts at this genre are almost always poor to just plain awful. Spectral in contrast scored a big thumbs up for me for its solid and believable military spec ops content, interesting and original plot, the sound acting and especially for the locations which I believe were in Hungary, The urban and industrial sets were exceptionally well selected and prepared - very detailed. The action, and there was a lot of it, was very well done with some very good CGI work. Overall I found this a very entertaining, enjoyable and quality sci-fi movie which is all we really want in a night at the movies isn't it? Just wish there were more as good as this.
The Legend of Ben Hall (2017)
Film making at it's very best...Bravo Australia
I can recall a UK TV series Ben Hall in the 70's with the very excellent Jon Finch in the lead...it was brooding and atmospheric with great acting...so I was interested to see how this telling of the tale would stack up. In short it far surpassed expectation.I was mesmerised by the sheer spectacle of the cinematography, the sublime acting especially by Jack Martin who reminded me of Danial Day Lewis which is not a bad thing, and a script which only included what was needing saying...And yes, it was brooding, it was atmospheric...with landscape to die for...This is a film the Australian film industry and especially all involved can justly be extremely proud of,it was a "simply outstanding" movie. Australia has made some cracking movies in the past and this stands up there with the best of them. If only Hollywood would / could produce more of this quality movie instead of the constant drivel it churns out with only the occasional gem. I have only ever bothered to review one other movie before that was " INK" by Jamin Winans...another masterpiece and a low budget independent. Nothing else was really worth the effort...Trust me..this movie is well worth watching
Wyatt Earp's Revenge (2012)
Dismal!
I seldom write reviews...However...On this occasion I felt the "Western genre" fans needed a heads up on this title. Westerns are rare these days and having always liked the genre...I thought I'd give this a try...having my appetite whetted again with the likes of "Deadwood" or even 3:10 to Yuma. Oh my! What a total and utter disappointment. To use a British term... What a lot of utter tosh! I sat through it thinking "it''s got to get better or have some saving grace"....it didn't on either count... now all that valuable time I wasted when I could have been doing something useful like picking my feet is gone forever. This movie went straight to DVD...can see why...but don't know why they even bothered. It was made with the same panache and imagination as Bonanza in the 60's. The story was predictable in the extreme and the acting and dialogue was embarrassing to watch. The costumes were laughable as well as very clean and I was left feeling that the movie was either made as a prank or for a bet. I cannot believe somebody actually sank money into making it. I guess Val Kilmer was there to give it some credibility..........he didn't! I would rank this as about as bad as a western gets...in fact off the top of my head I cannot recall one that was worse than this offering This ranks high on my list of all time movie garbage. So please if you're thinking of actually paying money for this, do yourself a real big favour and ...DON'T! Do something useful with the cash instead like having a few beers or giving to the homeless...because if you do buy it....well you have been warned!
Justified (2010)
Absolutely outstanding show!
Having been working abroad I missed this show entirely and it was highly recommended to me after discussing "Deadwood", which I ranked as an amazing show. So having some time on my hands on leave, I acquired the first two seasons and gave it a shot. I rate Timothy Olyphant highly in this type of role and wow did he deliver.Walton Goggins, another of my favorites from The Shield another favorite show was there too, so what a feast. The storyline, acting, editing , directing, music, sets.. in fact everything about the shows oozes "professional" It would be fair to say I was "blown away" by the show, now watching season three, which maybe doesn't have quite the same momentum of the first two seasons , but hey I'm not complaining at all...I could watch this all day....Raylen Givens is a man born beyond his time, his heart is in Tombstone or Dodge, and we're given the idea he plays out his life just like the old timers of old did.The character is a joy to behold. I seldom get time to watch good shows, but now added this to my favorites along with Deadwood, Dexter, band of brothers and Pacific. There's enough storyline explained in other reviews, I just wanted to go in print and add a big pat on the back to all involved with the show for making such a great show and putting a big smile on my face. I hope this show is planned to run a few more seasons yet. I feel Tim Olyphant has more scope to play with the Raylen Givens character yet.If you like the genre of Modern day westerns, I don't think anyone does it better than Timothy Olyphant and co.Sit back and immerse yourself in the atmosphere that is portrayed as Harlan County...and then tell me I was was wrong!
Ink (2009)
Quite simply outstanding
after 50 years or so of watching movies, nothing I have seen before could have prepared me for what I experienced watching"ink". I have no hesitation or doubt in stating that this is absolutely my favorite movie ...period! General opinion seems to be that the start appeared a little slow and maybe a little loose at times but even during that first 30 minutes I was hooked, knowing for sure I was watching something totally different. The visuals, the simple and honest acting, the original and moving storyline in fact everything about this movie just gelled for me. Six months on and this movie stays with me on a daily basis, the message, the idea that we are flawed but not without the possibility of redemption if we but seek it. This movie was for me an amazing and uplifting experience, and one for which I will be eternally grateful that I was able to share. Jamin and Kiowa Winans have in my opinion produced a cinema cult classic, and deserve the highest of praise for their efforts. I recommend this movie unreservedly to anyone with a soul and an open mind. Oh...and you really haven't seen anything like this before that I can think of.
