Deadstream (2022)
Very fun!
This film is fun as hell! I had the biggest grin on my face while watching it. It doesn't take itself seriously. Yeah, the main character is a stereotype of that internet personality thirsty for subs and views. Even through all that he tried to maintain his composure by keeping his profanity down during this horrific gauntlet. In the end he came through as a sympathetic character. I wanted him to make it through this journey.
The acting was great, given the circumstances. It was predictable at certain parts but in a good way. The things I thought would happen were things I wanted to happen.
Overall, this was a satisfying horror POV movie and I think you should watch it. The effects, sound, creativity and the plot are enjoyable.
Hellraiser (2022)
Very good horror flick
The cenobites in this do not care about gender, sexual orientation or race. They care about PAIN. That is it. That's their goal: to explore new horizons and cross thresholds of "sensation". It was the goal from the original films and it is the goal now. They're still proper villains in this. The gore, makeup and special effects in this are awesome and they took a lot of the best elements from the original films and combined them into this one.
The villains in this movie aren't hypocrites, either. You'll find that out if you watch this.
It's well acted in most parts and the story flows properly. I never thought they could put a sort of teen slasher dynamic on this the way they did but they did and I think it worked.
Check it out at least for the gory visuals. Everything is in here just for the fans of horror and gore.
Thunderheart (1992)
A perfect movie
This is awesome! The mysticism. The jokes. The culture. The bullsh!t. This movie has got it all with a concrete pavement of great actors and a solid story to wrap it all up in a bow tie of absolute sincerity!
Val Kilmer's character is sweating through out this entire film. It's like fever dream for his character. He's perpetually in a sweat lodge.
Graham Green is cool as hell in this movie. Every time he pops up its great!
What more is there to say about this movie? It leaves the audience with the benefit of the doubt regarding all the legends and potential supernatural elements. It also reveals a government that people love and trust that they may want to reconsider.
Something about this movie just hits me right. It always has. Every viewing. It never gets old.
Nope (2022)
It was okay
Overall, this movie was watchable. They really nailed the element of mystery surrounding all the incidents but there's three parts in this film that I found disappointing or dumb.
The background with the orangutan and the moment Wincott's character dies/sacrifices himself for no reason.
The orangutan thing was pointless. It could have just as easily been assumed the guy thought he could tame the creature without that background exposition. I feel like it was just useless filler for runtime.
Wincott's character dying...That was just stupid. Why did he do that? Did he expect his footage to be recovered after doing that? Why would he think that? It made no sense.
Keith David dies at the beginning. This movie loses one star just for that. Nobody puts Keith David in the corner.
The ending was disappointing because I really wanted a group of people to find the remains of the creature and study wtf it was made of and how it operated. Positive side is it did leave me wanting more. I'd watch a sequel if they made one.
The Lighthouse (2019)
Boring story...
R-Pats and Dafoe are great in this movie! But the overall story pissed me off!
They kept hinting some supernatural thing was going to occur! Nothing...It's psychological, like I haven't seen that in any other film.
This movie was disappointing. It's worth a watch but get ready for excellent performances by actors that yield zero mythological consequences in this dry, art house film. It's all in their heads! Two dudes go crazy on a little island with a lighthouse.
The sound design was nice...
This movie was written for a cheap Broadway show and the only thing that could sell it is good actors. Well, they got the good actors but the story is lame. Maybe this movie wasn't meant for my demographic. Idk.
Gretel & Hansel (2020)
A whimsical fever dream
The lighting, ambience, color and soundtrack are spot on to being a dark fantasy. All the things are there for this to be a good movie. It's deeply creepy. It's delightfully pagan and devilishly witchy! I didn't know the rating of this when I watched it for the first time. I honestly thought this film was Rated R from just how unsettling, dreary and nightmarish some of the visuals were. There's no way in hell I'd go into a house that looked like that, resembling a witches pointy hat. NOPE! This movie will rattle your bones if you're an adult but I think the kids will think its just a traditional fable movie to watch on Halloween in the future!
Hansel and Gretel (1987)
Definitive Hansel and Gretel Film
From the title you all ready know where this review is going. I suppose I'm biased since I grew up watching this movie. The late Cloris Leachman as the witch is evil and awesome! The late David Warner as the father is likeable and respectable even though Emily Richard is so mean and horrible as the mother, who worries herself into being the film's soft villain, that demands a man stand up for himself and her children show her respect for her care and effort. It all works out in the end, though as you find out she's just a mother in a tight spot who loves her husband and her children.
Cloris Leachman is such a legend in this movie. She's such a believable performing actress as the witch...as far as I'm concerned...witches, if they were real, SHOULD act just like she does in this movie. It's an iconic performance in my opinion. She makes the Wicked Witch of the West run for her money.
The soundtrack is catchy and memorable but it ought to be after 34 years.
This is a movie to show to your kids. Let them watch it alone, too. It'll be a trial for passage.
Prey (2022)
Solid Predator film with a believable female lead
This film starts off slow and at the very beginning you can see the main character ISN'T a Mary Sue. Furthermore they don't beat you over the head that she's a female however there is a little of that "Oh, you want to be a hunter!" and some of the other characters screw around with her. That's understandable considering women in Native American tribes generally weren't warriors or hunters. There's a thing called Viking Shield-maidens so it's not unbelievable.
Her relationship with her brother is cool and he actually supports her and recognizes her wits and abilities early in the film. This comes into play later and it organically sets things up.
I'm sick of movies that constantly brow beat the audience with female characters that have abilities that are shoe horned in at the expense of male characters. It's weak and pathetic. I mean, there's Ellen Ripley and Sarah Conner for likeable female leads in the films. In the video game genre you got Laura Croft and Samus Aran from the Metroid series. I think the writers of this film know that and don't treat the audience like toddlers.
There are some silly things in the film however they weren't glaring. Some of the CGI looks cheap but it gets good enough for the story to be told. There are some parts that were a little corny, too but hey, there were some corny parts in the first two films and those are some kickass movies!
The action is awesome! The fights are awesome! The gore is great! All the characters seem to work. The Predator kicks ass, too! I think the Predator generally looks demonic and terrifying in this. Some people have complaints but it would easily be another species like we saw in "Predators" 2010. Others have speculated hes a lesser evolved, primitive predator because the film takes place 300 years ago. Either one makes sense.
7/10 Check this movie out! It's a solid Predator prequel and one I consider cannon at this point.
The ending of this movie is VERY interesting. Be sure to watch the first part of the credits with all the animated graphics.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021)
This was great!
Love & respect went into making this. This movie has just about everything a Ghostbusters fan (from the first two films) could possibly want in it. Even the ending theme, sung by McKenna Grace (Phoebe), seems like it belongs in the Ghostbusters paradigm. There's seems to be a lot of skill and care with the acting, writing, soundtrack and special effects that's consistently weaved through the whole film.
One of the greatest things this film did is give a proper send off for one character and handed it down to a newer generation, both for the audience and in the story line. It has respect for legacy.
Some of the jokes were really funny! The ghosts looked great!
Some people say this movie is a tad slow paced but I thought it worked because it created mysticism for those who may not have seen the first two films. Even I enjoyed the mysticism, having seen them myself. There's a chance newcomers could go back and watch them because of this installment.
Only gripe I have is there could have been more ghosts...
Hope they make more movies!
8/10.
