Halloween II (2009)
A diffrent aproach to the franchise
This film is the follow up to Rob Zombie's reimaging from 2007,Which is a good and a bad thing. Good in that if you were a fan of that film you will be familiar with the tone and style of this one. Bad in that if you didn't enjoy that film or Rob zombie's style of writing and direction you will most likely not enjoy this one. Before I go into the story of this film I want to bring up that I am reviewing the unrated director's cut version of this film, Which I believe is the best version of this film. I will bring up some of the differences between the two cuts throughout this review. The story of this film follows Laurie Strode once again played by Scout Taylor Compton 2 years later (1 Year in the theatrical cut) dealing with the aftermath of the night of the previous film. When I titled this review "A different approach to the franchise" what I mean is the story for this film is very character driven. From the opening sequence to the end Rob Zombie does a fantastic job showing the effects of the events of the previous film on the characters, Laurie Strode in this film is the best example of this by having her be mental unstable along with her having PTSD from the previous film. The writing is mostly great the only flawI have with the writing at times is that some of the dialog consist of swearing constantly but in defense of that if you will it is fitting for a character who is going through grieve and suffering with PTSD. I also would like to praise the acting in this film for everyone in the cast delivering a heartfelt performance especially Brad dourf in this along with Scout Taylor Compton. Tyler mane as Michael Myers is just as good if not better than the previous film,Danile Harris also delivers a great performance. The direction in this film is also very well done and has its own style,This movie was filmed on 16mm camera giving it a very artistic look and feel along with several memorable scenes through out. The Ending in this film is also great,it ends with all three of the main characters dead giving it a sense of conclusion for Rob Zombie's storyline.
The Hills Have Eyes II (2007)
Nothing groundbreaking but still a fun time
This film is the follow up to the fantastic 2006 remake of Wes Cravens 1977 original,This film is not a remake of the 1985 Hills Have Eyes 2 for those who didn't know. This films plot is pretty simple but works,It follows a group of national guards tainees who go to vist an outpost and are killed off by mutants in the hills. This film is a mixed bag,For the positives I can say the effects and gore in this movie are very well done for the most part and the movie moves at a good pace with out wearing thin with a runtime of 90 minutes. The begatives for this film would have to be that the characters,While not unlikable they don't really have anything going for them in terms of personality. The mutants in this movie have great make up effects but they all flow togeather and can't really tellm them apart unlike in the 06 film. The writing in this film is also a mixed bag, being writen bt Wes Craven and his son you would think it would have been slightly better. The ending to this film is also kinda annoying in that it ends on a cliff hanger and never got picked up. Issuies aside this movie is a fun time to kill a night with but nothing special. 7/10.
The Thing (2011)
Not needed and below average at best
This film is a a prequel, however a lot of the time it feels like a remake of the 1982 film. Do to this as Ramboraph4life called it a "Premake" which is a pretty acurate term to describe this film I will refer to it as that through out this review. The basic plot of this movie is that a paleontologis played by Mary Elizabeth Winsted is sent to a Norweign base after they discover a alien in the ice and as you would think people at the base are killed off. The plot is pretty much an inferior rehash of the 82 film The direction in this feels very uninspired with hardly any memorible shots, on a positive note the set design through out this film is well done and has a lot of detail calling back to the 82 film. The cast is decent and do a good job for what they are given, however what they are given is not very good. The writing in this film through out most of it's runtime is predictable, With the only exception being this films take on the blood test, which they use the teeth fillings. Now on to the obivious thing in the room the effects which are terrible and looks like something out of a video game,The monster designs in this film are pretty good which makes the poor cgi even worse. The ending to this film is not very good minus one detail I will get to latter, The ending comes across like a bad final boss in a video game. The good thing about the ending is how it crosses over to the 82 film. Overall this premake is not needed and is not worth your time or money.
The Omen (2006)
pointless
Ever since 2003's texas Chainsaw massacre the remake trend from the 2000's was started with the date 6-6-06 coming up twentieth century fox took notice and well this "Remake" was released. It follows the same story as its 1976 counterpart for those not aware of the originals story Robert Thorne's wife Kathrine fails to deliver their baby so Robert adopts a mystery baby who turns out to be the antichrist. I might as well get the one or two good things about this movie out of the way,The direction by John Moore is not terrible like his other films notable 2013's "A Good Day To Die Hard" which had awful direction as well as 2008's "Max payne" which was a pg 13 adaptation of the video game of the same name. Here he tires to be stylistic which works at times but doesn't really. The second and last good thing I can say about this movie is the score which is taken from the original film. Now on to the bad this "Remake" is the equivalent of 1988's psycho in that they change anything from the original including the ending and even down to lines of dialog. The reason I gave this a 4/10 and not anything lower is because the special features on the blu ray/DVD are pretty cool with those being.
