La nuée (2020)
Nothing to root for, without any payoff
First of all, the movies premise is what made me watch it in the first place. Not because of how good it sounded, but because of how ridiculous I thought it is.
I watched the movie in German and new the lead actress from Black Spot (a series that I enjoyed)
Visually the movie was totally fine, the visual mood was set good and the effects were also perfectly good.
The acting was also good (assuming that it isn't amazing or rubbish in the original french version).
The sound design was also quite good. The intensity was set nicely audio-wise.
Sadly, that is where the good things end. The premise is awful, the plot is awful and the characters are awful. The main family has has massive anger issues and no actions ever make sense. An example for this would be the main characters relationship to the winery owner, which is shown at the very beginning of the movie. The winery owner has no reason to be interested or even attracted to the main character. She never gives him the slightest hint of attraction or appreciation, it simply does not make sense.
If the goal pf the writers was to make every character as unlikeable as possible, then they succeeded. If it wasn't which it most likely wasn't, then this movie failed; which it definitely did for me.
It wasn't scary or intense because it was predictable, it wasn't enjoyable because of the characters and the plot, the only thing it did, was make me baffled at the stupidity and the attitude of its characters.
I simply do not recommend watching this movie. Go watch something nicer.
Tenet (2020)
The best take on Timetravel and the logic of things so far.
Absolutely perfect, the movie leaves so many hints throughout and they all become relevant with the progression of the story. Everything unravels in the most beautiful way.
The masterfully crafted story is massively enhanced by the Music, Cinematography and also Choreography. It is unfathomably satisfying and pleasing to see things this abstract just make sense. They shouldn't make sense but they do.
Nolan manages to fully convince the viewer of his version of Spacetime. This is Inception times 10.
This movie can only be recommended.
Red Dot (2021)
A decent "meh"
The movie is relatively predictable but the twists are still executed pretty alright.
The protagonists are a little bit hard to get into in the beginning and do some dumb stuff. Though that doesn't matter by the end of the movie.
For me there really wasn't anything special about the movie, but that also means that there wasn't anything that's upset me really.
As the title says, the movie is a decent "meh".
I can recommend this movie as a decent way to kill some time but don't anything special.
The Boy Next Door (2015)
The premise falls flat
The movie sort of goes into a similar direction as Gone Girl does. The problem with that is, that the premise of this movie doesn't work.
The pressure that is put on the main character isn't all that bad and on multiple occasions where the main character could escape the situation easily, she doesn't.
The biggest problem of the movie is the writing i'd say. It is hard to connect to the tension when it just isn't that bad and also quite easy to resolve.
There are worse movies, but I still don't recommend this one.
Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
Phenomenal
Before I watched this movie, someone told me that they were massively disappointed by the ending of it and that anyone would be. Now I am a huge Tarantino fan and assumed that the movie just had another "Reservoir Dogs", "Pulp Fiction", "The Hateful Eight", "Django Unchained" or "Inglorious Basterds" ending and that that might've been what they disliked. After having watched it I can confidently say that the whole movie is amazing, I couldn't find a thing I disliked: Phenomenal acting, phenomenal writing, phenomenal set design, phenomenal costume design, phenomenal cinematography, phenomenal editing, phenomenal sfx and vfx and just phenomenal EVERYTHING. And the ending of course didn't disappoint either, it was a very entertaining and well executed
The film is so incredibly detailed and you can really tell that everyone involved put so much care and effort into it that it just fills you with happiness! I absolutely recommend this movie, for me it is just as entertaining as the other movies in Tarantino's magnificent lineup.
Daredevil (2003)
Wacky but somewhat amusing
I have watched what I believe to be the theatrical cut. As I read from other reviews, the theatrical cut is supposedly much worse than the directors cut so keep that in mind.
The protagonist is played by Ben Affleck and the antagonist is played by Michael Clarke Duncan, both phenomenal actors. Sadly their acting falls flat due to ridiculous dialogue, editing, goofy VFX and pacing. The movie just has an overall wacky vibe.
It feels like the family friendly, over the top superhero movie that it is. The more recent Daredevil series managed to set the tone much better.
All in all it is pretty bad, maybe I recommend it for people who want to watch something wacky pr goofy, not much more than that though.
I Care a Lot (2020)
Extremely disappointed
I saw that the lead actress in this movie (Rosamund Pike) is the same actress as in Gone Girl, a movie that I really enjoyed. So I expected a similarly good performance from her, that's what I got too. She did play the character very well, not as nuanced as in Gone Girl of course but that's hard to achieve anyways.
Dianne Wiest and Peter Dinklage played their characters very well. So, the acting was not what disappointed me about this movie, it was basically everything else.
The Movie starts of quite interesting, it had an interesting premise. That is, until it becomes more and more ridiculous by the minute. Things happen, that are not just unlikely but downright implausible. This makes the premise; which is rooted in reality and quite a serious subject for that matter, feel like it doesn't even connect to what the movie becomes later on, only to be rebooted at the very end.
Now a movie does by no means have to be realistic or plausible, but if it chooses to go along this path it should do it well or at least commit to it. In this case the ridiculousness is just topped by further ridiculousness.
Lastly, I didn't enjoy the very saturated and quite vibrant color grading but I could've lived with that if it wasn't for the other problems.
All in all, I don't recommend this movie, it is not necessarily a waste of time or a 1/10, but it isn't worthy of a viewers time either.
The VVitch: A New-England Folktale (2015)
A great experience, with horror as desert
Great cinematography, great acting, great music, great pacing and last but certainly not least. Great horror. With nearly every scene you can see the thought put into framing, lighting and blocking of the scenes. Anya Taylor-Joy, Ralph Ineson and Harvey Scrimshaw each deliver great performances in which you feel every emotion the characters feel. Anger, anguish, wrath, pain, sorrow are all portrayed in the most intimate way imaginable. The score to this movie builds intensity that can only be matched by the likes of Dunkirk. Silence builds a great contrast to this. The horror is decent, but people who are not so fond of nudity might be a little put off by the amount of it.
Yet another movie that I recommend watching. This should also be enjoyable for people who are not into horror.
Southpaw (2015)
Formulaic, but executed well.
The storyline of the movie follows an expected formula but doesn't overdo it. The protagonist never acts in a way that wouldn't fit into the previous development. The four things that make this movie good for me are, Jake Gyllenhaal, Forest Whitaker, the cinematography and "The Notorious B.I.G - Notorious Thugs" (eventhough it is the censored version). Jake Gyllenhaal and Forest Whitaker deliver great performances that give a sense of realness. The fights add to this realness, punches connect and the power of the blows is felt. The cinematography is good overall. Especially during he fights there is a great mixture between realistic camera angles; like you'd see in a real match, and creative POV shots or other creative angles.
Overall a decently good movie that I recommend watching!
Bajo cero (2021)
Better than expected.
This movie shouldn't have a lot going for it (in terms of settings), but it somehow manages to keep the story interesting. All logical questions I asked myself while watching, were answered either in earlier scenes or a little later. These answers never came out of the blue and always fit the story. The logical question were also answered by showing rather than telling. This helped create a great sense of tension which made the twists of the story even more enjoyable. The movie felt like a more plot heavy version of Con Air with better characters!
A decent to good Spanish movie that I recommend watching!
