Matt Rife: Natural Selection (2023)
Doesnt Survive Natural Selection
What happened?? I was soo looking forward to this but halfway in and Im feeling so underwhelmed. Im a big fan of his but it is not what I expected. His jokes really fell flat, most gave a general nod but definitely not what I was expecting. He got religious very quickly, some of his "jokes" are offensive, and overall not up to par. Which is disappointing because his humor is usually pretty great when he interacts with the audience. But he doesnt do that. Instead he makes a couple of jokes that were good and the rest are horrible. No talking to the crowd at all, he took that away which is a big mistake. Thats really why people were interested in him in the first place. Giving comedy an edge and standing out. Matt-you really let your fans down; we expected more!!
Barbie (2023)
Barbie Fantastic!
The acting was amazing. Ryan Gosling should win an award for this. There was much laughter, tears, dancing, and conflict which all played out well. The acting resembled the characters as toys, down to every little detail. Phenomenal acting! The movie shows that Barbie and Ken, and the other characters have been completely thought out. The development was very deep and relates to the audience very well. The dialogue was great, too, as there was just enough of it, showing depth. Ties into the plot and theme thoroughly.
Barbie has impacted girls for many years and the movie introduces the audience to a light hearted history of it. Barbie is supposed to be perfect and experience every day at its best. But the world of Barbie the audience sees is far from perfect, and it is separated from the real world of those who actually play with her. The plot development was amazing, as Barbie goes on a mission to discover herself and save her Barbie world. In the meantime like the slogan says, "She's everything. He's just Ken." Ken is also having a crisis in being number two, and questions how he fits into the Barbie world. As both toys deal with their identity crises, the themes of empowerment, patriarchy, feminism, and being yourself comes into play. Other valuable life lessons are shown as well that makes this movie memorable for women and even men. The themes are powerful and heartwarming, yet raw and honest. The sound was bubbly and popping, the graphics impressed me the most. From the costumes, to the plasticity of objects, to the action everything was visually effective. The camera angles were also notable.
This movie was very upbeat and much more hilarious than I orginally anticipated. The movie resonates with what its like as they tackle the real world. The movie brings so many elements from various generations of Barbie and the audience learns about the creator and what it means to be-Barbie. As she and Ken both question their existence, the heart of the movie centers on the impact that they make towards themselves and others. With fantastic graphics, dancing and song, humor, and life lessons this movie makes it a captivating film that everyone will surely enjoy!
Oppenheimer (2023)
Brilliant, Powerful, & Complicated
The movie itself is not about the Manhattan Project. Its merely depicted. It instead heavily focuses on Oppenheimer himself. The movie is tasked with answering a single question throughout the entire movie: Is Oppenheimer a man to be trusted? The development of the movie is very well designed. Oppenheimer is a complicated man, with strong beliefs and who is entitled to those beliefs, and yet he is constantly interrogated for not just being the man who invented the atomic bomb, but for whether or not he is being loyal to America. Forces beyond his control and people who plot against him, but he has the wit and strength of a scientist who must prove to no one that he is in fact human.
The plot since it tells the story of Oppenheimer is very well written. Its highly intelligent and has many twists. Its told in the past, present, future with referencing each many times. The beginning is a bit slow and theres a lot of science knowledge everywhere so any audience members that dont know a lot will end up being confused. But the dialogue is very intelligent and theres lots of it, frankly sometimes there too much of it to where it gets boring.
However, the camera focuses mostly on Oppenheimers perspective, shots can be seen from multiple angles. The sound was thrilling, startling, loud, and suprisingly powerful. It captured the movie. Not just the bomb itself, but its like we are in Oppenheimer's mind breathing in his sights and hearing thoughts. The graphics are just as powerful that captures the attention of the audience.
Overall, the purpose of this movie is a hidden message-to determine if Oppenheimer is trustworthy to science and to America. He is tasked with building a bomb, and he feels the weight of not entirely being thrilled about it. He is convicted of the humanity of killing a death weapon, that would at that time possibly destroy the world. The task is difficult because Oppenheimer is put into a difficult position for the sake of the war.
But once the war is over, he feels the fear of others against him. Oppenheimer is after all only human. He expresses remorse and makes mistakes in the movie that shatters his family. He grieves for those who the bomb killed. He advocates for the freedom of having strong beliefs such as his. And so the movie must then answer the question, should America give him security clearance? Is he a good citizen?
Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)
Good But Too Fast
I love Ethan Hunt so although a good movie, it still left me hanging. Its a good movie for action and fightinh scenes. There are great views from multiple angles. The movement is fast and intense, with several plot twists, stunts are performed well, and the sound and picture quality is great. However, it delivers an impossible question still understand: purpose for this movie? Watch it and you will still be left hanging. The new technology that is made by a villainous group is very difficult to comprehend, because the plotline is too fast. Even the characters themselves havent the faintest clue, and not even the object that they are deemed to find can fix this either. It leaves the viewer confused throughout. There is also a new character but they dont add any value to the plot, because without them Hunt still can do his mission. Overall, good to see for an action packed thriller, however it leaves confusion throughout and is missing purpose for the franchise series.
The Little Mermaid (2023)
Refined & Delightful!
The story was wonderful and although some things in the plot were changed, it benefited. The music, the culture and the inclusive characters really has made this a masterpiece and worth seeing! The movie definitely brings more humor and sparkle. The movie also brings more heartwarming moments and it is full of vibrant color. However, some of the scenes didnt make sense and were a bit confusing like when the bird talked underwater. The graphics under "the sea" wasnt the best, felt less authentic. Although the movie dives more into Eric's character which is appreciated, I wish it provided more of a depth into Ariel's. All in all, a very lively refined movie to the authentic classic everyone is hoping for!
Confess (2017)
Really good but it differs from the book
I loved the series but it is very different from the book itself. The actors were great in this. I loved the plot, really tugged at my heart. But I recommend reading it first otherwise it will confuse you! I have a some concerns on this series. One, I don't understand having this as a mini series. Episodes are too short. It would have been great if this was stretched out. Two, the camera shakes too much throughout. Three, the first episode rushes. Lastly, the series completely changed a lot of elements. Some are minor but others changed the storyline significantly. All in all a great series but the quality of the story and view lacks.
The Noel Diary (2022)
So disappointing
Not even a movie that was worth my time. Most boring and uninteresting. This one dragged on. The connection between these two was horrible, just didnt feel like they clicked. There is barely anything Christmasy about this. Snow and a few scenes thrown together, hardly made this a holiday movie. Just wasnt the theme. Romance was hardly the theme either. It wasnt a key feature and the ending just made it too bizarre. The storyline didnt go and plot was confusing. Lastly the acting didnt inspire or really tie it all together. I was so hopeful this was to be a good one. Upsetting it just completely fell part. And the ending-like that was it?? Just didnt even make sense!
Persuasion (2022)
Witty, Surprisingly Enjoyable
After all the bad reviews I had heard about it, I have to say I am a fan! This movie was easy to understand and had a more upbeat vibe to it. Did it have changes? Yes. Does it stay true to the books plot? Yes. Dakota was a perfect fit for this role. It has modern takes on a classic literature piece, that will make you laugh and relate to. I have seen the 1995 version, and liked that one, but I felt Netflix's version gave it a fresh take that is helpful to those who haven't seen previous versions or read the book. The plot was easy to follow, it wasnt rushed, and the acting was pretty good. It took me by surprise!
Where the Crawdads Sing (2022)
Worth Your Time
I havent read the book yet but I think the story overall will tug at your heartstrings. A coming of age book mixed in with To Kill a Mockingbird was absolutely inspiring. After being abandoned so much, the main character tries to understand love and nature all at once. The scenery is also quite beautiful. The only things I wish were different is how the movie scenes were set up, the trial didnt make a lot of sense realistically, and the ending will leave viewers confused (unless youve read the book). But it was definitely worth the watch and it was a remarkable movie, worth your time!
Stalked by a Prince (2022)
Not what I expected
I hoped for a good thriller, but this wasnt it. While the story was okay, the acting was bad and so cheesy. It became too predictable of what was going to happen next. Could have been better!
Jurassic World Dominion (2022)
Just no
The plot was poorly written and the acting was terrible. It was also slow and just dumb. It became boring and as it dragged on, the plot just didnt make any sense, nor did it get any better when you combine previous characters with new. Just not worth it!
The Last Letter from Your Lover (2021)
Not as Good as I Hoped
I found myself very bored at the plot. Towards the end it starts to pick up its pace, but I felt it just lagged everywhere else. The trailer was very captivating, sadly the movie was not.
Bridgerton (2020)
Season 1 absolutely fantastic, Season 2 lacks sparkle!
Season 1 was exciting, brilliantly written and its acting was very well executed. Season 2 lacks the drama that was captivated in Season 1. Season 2 did not completely win me over: The plot was poor and it dragged out two characters' love for each other without drama or sparkle. While it is nice to expand other characters in the plot, I was expecting so much more, I only hope the writers will redeem themselves in future seasons.
The Waltons (1972)
Offensive
Don't waste your time. The Waltons although heartwarming is very bias and the family lives in a bubble. When newcomers arrive, although they give them food and a place to sleep, they are quick to judge and show their prejudice. Religious beliefs play a huge role and this comes in the way. They are incapable of handling diversity and seeing things from others' point of view. The family especially the older adults are very controlling of their children. The show's script lives in the past and it really shows, with sexist and racist views as well. Although they write to show life lessons, they write from the family's perspective no matter who and what it harms. There are much better ways at getting a message across or showing how people lived back then with all the unnecessary things that can be damaging.
