Like watching paint peel
23 November 2021
The first 20 minutes could have been edited out, and nothing would be lost. The movie moves at a glacial pace all the way through. If you enjoy watching an overweight, depressed, emo, moping around smoking, drinking, staring into space, and twiddling knobs on her casio synths, then this is the movie for you.

The Twilight Zone: Once Upon a Time (1961)

There is a reason Vaudeville died
28 October 2021
Slapstick comedy had its day during the silent era. Very few actors since then have managed to pull off this art-form with any originality - you can count them on one hand - Abbott & Costello, The Marx Brothers, The 3 Stooges, Jerry Lewis, and Jim Carrey - and in this day and age most of those people I listed are no longer considered funny.

Buster Keaton may have been a comic genius in the silent era, but this TZ episode besmirches his name. It's so lame! I didn't laugh once - but I winced in embarrassment several times at the corniness of it all.

The Twilight Zone: Person or Persons Unknown (1962)

Precursor to Liam Neeson's 'Unknown'?
28 October 2021
This episode's plot is very similar to that of the Liam Neeson movie from 2011. I wonder if it was the inspiration.

Richard Long was very convincing in the lead role - showing acting chops I never thought he had.

I groaned at the 'it was only a dream' cliche' near the end, but they managed to salvage the situation with a decent twist ending - although what he ends up with is certainly doesn't warrant his horrified expression.

Foster Is Mesmerizing
25 October 2021
Critics have wildly differing views about this movie. To be honest, it's a bit of a slow burn, and there's no jump scares or buckets of blood, so any horror or thriller afficionados might be disappointed.

This movie is better appreciated by movie fans who like good acting, intelligent scripts, and general creepiness.

It is important to remember the Jodie Foster was only 13 when she made this movie. How many 13 year olds in the world could pull off such a mature and demanding role? Certainly not the Home Alone kid. Given her prodigious talent, she should have become a star as bankable as Pitt or Di Caprio - yet, apart from Silence Of The Lambs, her talent has been largely wasted.

The other standouts in this movie are Martin Sheen and the under-appreciated Scott Jakoby. Sheen is suitably creepy as the sick pervert. On a surface level, Jakoby's character is just comedy relief, but Jakoby is extremely likeable and sympathetic, and his character displays a sense of wisdom that is often lacking in Foster's character.

I enjoyed this movie immensely - in spite of the plot holes.

Gets worse as it goes along
16 October 2021
The movie started out OK. The sexist male stereotyping was as subtle as a sledgehammer, but I thought...ok...back in WWII most men probably behaved that way, so I was giving it a pass.

I was even able to overlook the highly improbable prospect of a lightly-built, multi-skilled female, who knows how to fly planes, operate machine guns, modify electrical systems, and kick ass using martial arts. After all, we easily suspend our disbelief when The Rock, Arnie, and Stallone play indestructible warriors (not to mention Tom Cruise).

However, as the movie went along, suspension of disbelief became more and more impossible.

The spider-walking upside down on the outside of a plane mid-flight; the contents of a mysterious box that managed to remain a mystery for more than five minutes; the final fight scene between our hero and a gremlin. It was enough to make me puke.

Mummy Dearest (2021)

Movie equivalent of Clickbait
13 August 2021
Michael Pare', Tara Reid, and Lou Ferrigno's screen times combined is barely 5 minutes. They must have worked on this movie during their toilet-breaks on other movies.

And what's with the actress who plays Scarlett? She's always gasping for air, as if she's just run a marathon.

No scares, no mummy, no real plot. Forget about it. Makes Tom Cruise's version of 'The Mummy' look like a good movie.

Better than expected
20 July 2021
This movie reminded me of Vincent Price's 'Theatre Of Blood', only not as fun.

This movie is well acted, and has a very dark sense of humour. It could have been an excellent movie, if only the back-stories of the main characters were a little less hackneyed.

Repetition to the point of stupefication
9 July 2021
It's only worth watching this movie if you are into statistics.

You can count
  • the number of aircraft that are destroyed;
  • the number of buildings that are reduced to rubble;
  • the number of futile fight scenes between super beings who are invincible
  • the number of times humans pointlessly shoot at super-beings with guns and ammo
  • the number of explosions

then you can compare the total time taken up by all these scenes, and compare them to the time taken up with an actual story. The movie runs for 2.5 hours, of which approximately 0.1 hours are devoted to telling a story......and they say Michael Bay movies are over the top!

Laugh-In (1967–1973)

Am I Missing Something?
18 February 2021
I was around 10 years old when 'Laugh In' first aired. My siblings would watch it faithfully week in & week out. I can honestly say that I went through entire episodes without laughing, or even smiling, a single time.

As I grew older, I thought maybe I was just too young and innocent to 'get' the jokes.

I just re-watched a couple of episodes yesterday, and not only did I not laugh or smile once, I groaned and rolled my eyes at just how lame the jokes were. It seemed to be written by old fogies trying to cash in on the flower-power craze, by pretending to be 'hip'.

It's not as though there wasn't some talent on display - Goldie Hawn & Lily Tomlin were genuine stars, and Ruth Buzzi had her moments, but the rest of the cast was completely disposable - particularly the forced teleprompter humour of comperes Rowan & Martin.
