One Dollar Difference (2003)
a great story
A well directed, well produced short. See it and vote for it. Doug uses friends, Romans and countrymen to give the real restaurant a lived in feeling. The child actor, Dakota Whidden, does a great job in playing good guy to the stressed, over worked waitress. Darcy Wright, the waitress, needs a little seasoning in really looking haggard and cynical. Perhaps a stripper should have been cast. The cinematography is decent for a no budget production and the make up is great. The movie can be seen on Frontier Airlines. Doug is the kind of director who will always bring a movie in under budget. His best work lays ahead, maybe a remake/full length of his classic on addiction, on drink. The only possible weakness of this film is that it doesn't raise the tension level quite enough. However, it holds up against other more well financed productions.
Losing Ground (2005)
Great film, disturbing subject.
This is one of the best best films I have seen in 2005 but unfortunately most viewers will never see it. It is not "big", or flashy. It does not have any "stars" but it is skillfully put together. All of the components, acting, directing, cinematography and editing make this a movie well worth the effort it will take to find it. It is based on a play, it happens in real time, in a Video Poker bar and is a very sad commentary on gambling and the toll it takes on those unable to control it. It is entertaining and disturbing. I live in Las Vegas and the character portrayals are real. These people exist. They are your neighbors and friends. With legalized gambling growing everywhere in the US lawmakers should be required to see this film to see the toll gambling can take even when carefully monitored.
Transamerican Killer (2005)
Great B Flick
Transamerican Killer is a movie you want not to like. It is about Las Vegas, men's clubs, psycho killers, it contains lots of nudity and blood yet it is beautifully filmed. The cinematography is wonderful, the nudity scenes are tasteful. There are a lot of first time actors who are so much better than a lot of established actors that you have to wonder what SAG is all about. The plot is thin but you have so much fun watching the movie that it really doesn't matter!
