Chakushin ari 2 (2005)
An interesting premise with a weaker tale.
After the ultimate success of its predecessor, "One Missed Call 2" is released in 2005 with a different crew on-board. Having an upgraded premise, you'd expect this sequel to be better--but it really isn't. Sure, the deaths are more intriguing, but you've got to listen--the film has more cons than expected. The ending is somewhat unsatisfying, and it seems that a brand new story is attempted to be forced into the original lore of Mimiko from the first "One Missed Call" film. Fortunately, the runtime is much more reasonable than the first film, and the terror stays the same, not changing much from the original film!
Chakushin ari (2003)
Enjoyable J-horror flick with plenty of surprises.
Takashi Miike's One Missed Call is another J-horror flick centered around modern technology. Some scenes recall other films, such as the funeral scene which adapts the same cinematography as 1998's Ringu, directed by Hideo Nakata. The premise seems simple, but the film itself is shockingly decent. The film not only includes pleasantly violent scenes, but it also includes shocking story and character development. However, by the release of this film, the misunderstood ghost story has been a bit stale, and the runtime is a little too long. However, One Missed Call improves on several other J-horror films in that time in various ways.
