Extracted (2012)
Are you kidding me?? 5.8 ! This is an 8+ Film !!
I am shocked to see this film at a disrespectful 5.8 vote. This is the best indie film I've seen this year! It's like a low budget Inception and the writing is possibly even better. If the production had a bigger budget I would've love to have seen that end result. But they did EXCELLENT with what they had to work with. The acting was convincing (especially Dominic Bogart playing the junkie, brilliant job mate, just brilliant) and I found myself attached to the characters. Especially Dominic's character. A nice twist to look forward too at the end, I guarantee you won't be disappointed.
If you liked Inception, Source Code, Primer, Pi, Matrix, Love, You will really enjoy Extraction.
Happiness (1998)
Solondz captivates audiences of the dark comedy genre
This is a film that lives up to black comedy. It is on my top 5 all time film list and Solondz` filmmaking is some of the best I've seen. Some people might judge this film as being everything but funny but I find it hilarious. Solondz` originality in concept, brave direction and fascinating character development makes 'Happiness' a film to respect. If I ever had the privilege to meet Todd Solondz I would shake his hand for having the courage to cross a line other directors never had enough balls to cross.
Nurse Betty (2000)
Black Comedy? .... Nah.
Okay, after watching the scalping scene I thought this was going to be another black comedy (not that there's anything wrong with that) but as it unfolds I realized it is not so at all. With only three inclement scenes through the whole movie I don't know how anyone could categorize it as being "violent". I think Neil was kind of obligated to show depth in these scenes to keep the movie versatile to the audience. Yes I could say this movie had a range of genres to keep the interest level up but then again I could say he didn't have enough from each genre to have the audience rise their expectations to satisfy them with a good conclusion. I thought Jean-Yves did an outstanding job with lighting in the cinematography and casting of Freeman and Rock worked really well (especially their costumes, very original). This is a good movie. If you have the time, rent it on DVD and listen to both the commentaries (1 - with cast and Neil, 2 - with crew), you will learn a lot.
Leaving Las Vegas (1995)
A truly unique and affectionate film
"I think you should see a doctor", the most powerful line in the movie. It is amazing how she lasted so far before breaking their pact. A truly unique and affectionate film which I recommend viewing for the strong hearted. Lovely direction and surreal performances by both Cage and Shue. ***1/2 out of ****
