Skull Island (2023)
Mediocre show; all characters have same sarcastic personality
Think Thor Love and Thunder, and how there was too much comedy, slapstick, and sarcasm that cut into every scene, and you have an idea of why this show is mediocre. Now comedy and sarcasm aren't bad for a kids show, but literally EVERY character is sarcastic so like every conversation is just an exchange of sarcasm. That pretty much tells you the writers aren't very good and don't know how to balance things. Also on the point of kids show, I don't think the writers know if they really want this to be a kids show or more adult themed show because the dialogue and action is kids oriented, but then there are a ton of people who actually die in bloody ways. The two sides don't mess real well, especially when characters kind of make light sarcastic jokes about the many dead people. It's just weird. Don't feel like the writers really thought it through. Also another indication of bad writers is the trope of characters making bad decisions to move the plot forward. There's more negative things I could point out that makes the show mediocre but I'll leave it at that.
Animation is quite good so I'll give it that.
Locke & Key (2020)
Same as the other reviews, great potential squandered with poor writing
Just wanted to write another review affirming what most others are saying. That the show had great potential, an interesting concept, mildly annoying but acceptable characters, and overall a decide story. But the actual story telling and progression was so bad. The only was the writers knew how to create tension was by having characters do stupid things. And that led the characters to be annoying and frustrating, but it didn't have to be like that. Except the mom, I thought most of the actors / characters could have been great, including the villains. Just sad how they no one in the production of this series pointed out the stupidity of the script.
Green on the Greens (2021)
Really bad, unless it was supposed to look like middle schoolers made it
Just terrible acting, dialogue, direction, camera work, and plot progression. Mystery is very thin, the "clues" just fall in their laps, and there's a ton of banter between the characters that has no relevance to the plot. There are a ton of side actors who are irrelevant. The actors had no chemistry between them. For example, the actresses who played sisters, you wouldn't know they were sisters unless they actually told you. It was very difficult to finish. I bet the reviews that gave this movie 8 or 9/10 were posted by the cast members themselves. Of course if this was made by middle schoolers, then please ignore all my criticisms.
Dead End: Paranormal Park (2022)
Strictly an okay show
Disregard all of the 9 or 10 star reviews from people who automatically like it because the show has a diverse and LGBTQ+ cast. And disregard all of the 1 or 2 star reviews from people who automatically hate it because the show has a diverse and LGBTQ+ cast. Just part of the weird times we live in where people fit into their own "teams" and blindly support or oppose based on their teams. I honestly don't care if this show has or doesn't have diverse and LGBTQ+ cast. I just wanted to watch a good paranormal, quirky show, but this show is not very good. Not terrible but also not great. It's just okay. The characters and voice acting is decent. But the plot, story elements, paranormal elements, and jokes are subpar. Also, they start with focus on a "wizard demon" in the beginning of the show and then shift hard right to a missing person storyline. Just didn't enjoy as much as I thought I would have.
Jiok (2021)
Excellent show with intriguing philosophical story, not perfect but worth a watch!
First of all, I would say to ignore the people who have given this show low ratings because this was never made for them. They probably watched it assuming it was one type of show, and it turned out to be a different show, and they are bitter about it. I don't like drama period pieces, but you don't see me going on the Bridgerton's page and giving it low ratings just because the show wasn't for me.
I would highly recommend watching this show if you like animes like Death Note. It is quite different from Death Note, but does have the same flavor in the whole supernatural judgement against sinners thing. Overall, the show was fast paced and intriguing enough for me to be hooked. They had nice cliff hangers at the end of the episodes which made you want to watch the next episode right away. I do think the first 3 episodes were better than the last 3 episodes because the pacing was faster in the first 3 episodes. The CGI for the monsters wasn't the greatest. It was good enough, and frankly wasn't the main focus of the show. The monster scenes were merely catalysts for the rest of the show's plot. That being said, I do believe they will dive deeper into the supernatural phenomenon and the monsters' origins if they come out with a 2nd season.
The show wasn't perfect. I thought the characters did stupid things sometimes that made no sense. There was a vigilante group that would go around kidnapping and beating people up in name of God, made of mostly young kids. The fact they could do that with the police almost never catching them was quite ludicrous, especially since these were low level thugs, not smart enough to hide or escape effectively. And it was just plain stupid that the good guys who were opposing the bad guys did the bare minimum to protect themselves or fight back. I mean these vigilantes were beating people with bats and pipes; maybe get some weapons of your own to fight back? Or gather with a group of like-minded people who may have been victims of the vigilantes before and band together to fight back? Just felt the good guys were portrayed as lame ducks and let the bad guys just wail on them, barely fighting back.
If you like drama stories with supernatural elements, then watch this show. If you are looking for a straight horror show, then this is not that show. I love horror shows, but this is not a straight horror show. The supernatural element is only there to push the drama along.
The Irregulars (2021)
Absolutely hated this show
There's just so much wrong with this show. They took a great premise and just messed it up completely. Thaddea Graham is a terrible actress and should never have been cast as the lead. Most of the other teenage actors aren't great either, but she was the worst. I didn't have a problem with the diversity or the music as others did, but definitely can see others' arguments of "wokeness" in their diversity picks. For example, Watson being cast as a black man was fine because he's a completely fictional character, but the Duke of Winchester being cast as a black man makes no sense. It's a small thing, but stuff like this pushes people already skeptical of Hollywood's "woke" diversity agenda further into their anti-diversity corner.
Finally, the worst part is what they did to Sherlock and Watson's characters. I mean it's one thing to add a little twist to their characters or update their personality a little as this is an adaptation, but the show makes them completely different and terrible characters. I am sure most people who decided to watch this show wasn't because of the irregulars themselves. It was because that meant the show was linked to Sherlock Holmes. I know I did. I know who the irregulars are in Sherlock's stories, but they wouldn't be the reason I watch a show. I watched it because it's linked to Sherlock's world. People have a certain expectation of Sherlock and Watson and even Mycroft, and to make all of these characters absolutely pathetic was so stupid. Just absolutely hated the show.
