OK I'm going to stereotype...
25 January 2017
There is always someone out there that is going to say a certain movie is great simply because it has that "artsy" or "independent" feel to it, regardless if the movie is good or not. That is the only reason this movie can have the overly generous rating it has.

I get that it's not a comedy, but shouldn't at least the few improv scenes they show be mildly funny? OK so I got over that I wasn't going to laugh at all during the movie, but then for a drama it was simply flat and boring. I never felt anything for the characters, even though the acting wasn't bad. The "commune" actors didn't seem to have a believable chemistry to where you really felt for them.

I grasped that the movie wasn't really plot-driven and its intent was to show struggling actors and how they deal with things like selfishness, self doubt, compassion, etc., but I just found the presentation of it a big yawner.

Artsy fartsy movie - plots deeper on star trek
7 November 2004
I fail to see why people like this movie other than reasons based on "Wow, wasn't the cinematography awesome." Sure the cinematography was good I guess, but if the plot doesn't keep up than it's a waste in my opinion. The movie brings up the classic concept of "what does it mean to be human," but then never really creates any interesting twists or plot development based on this. I doubt even back in '82 the concept of dealing with artificial life was 'that' novel. I've seen old Star Treks that dealt with the issue. Strip out all the dark lighting, rain, and slum shots and what do you have? - a boring movie. It got so old afer a while seeing the flying police cars over rainy slums. Then inside buildings rays of light kept flashing in as if from search lights. Everything seemed so artificial and it was as if the director was just wasting my time.

X-Files/6thSense/Matrix meets Presumed Innocent
30 July 2002
If you like suspense thrillers with some plot twists in a slightly futuristic world setting this movie is for you. The movie reminded me of presumed innocent but set in the future with cool philosophical/cultural aspects to contend with. Excellent movie.

Those that liked it are only trying to be "hip"

Warning: Spoilers
Ok, first off there are those posting here talking about how those of us who didn't like this movie missed the point- it's about a man's obsession and the development of his character. But please, how many of you picked up the movie and rented it because you thought it was just a chance to see some deep character acting? People rented this movie because they thought they were getting at least some kind of thriller movie. Sure Jack's acting was good, but why would anyone rent a movie solely on the fact that there is some good acting? Does plot matter at all? It's funny to hear the reasons people have for liking this movie. Some say "Oh it's so cool the way Penn uses the camera or develops the characters through vivid scenery." I don't mind interesting camera work and great scenery shots if it serves a purpose. In this movie there really was no purpose, it just slowed the movie down. You keep watching though because you keep thinking "Something big is going to happen soon- the girl will get taken and Jack will flip out and go after the killer." Well, that doesn't happen. The ending is horrible and not even plausible. Ok, whoopie, big surprise so it's the guy from the general store and not the church leader. The killer dies in a car wreck and yet some how Jack (sorry don't even remember his name in the movie) doesn't even see or hear about the big accident on the way home? (This is a little town remember). Also the cops passing by don't even stop to investigate? Surely Jack told them all about a black car and porcupines yet they just ignore this as they pass by? Come on seriously who could like this movie? The more I write this more I realize what a joke it was. I was willing to put up with the stereotypical small town goofy Mayberry cops in the beginning and the unrealistic performance by the newbie cop on the force all for the sake of thinking it has to get better. Please I beg you not to waste you time watching this movie. I knew I should have checked the imdb site before I rented this. I would have been able to tell from those that liked it what their reasons were. They are the people that have to like a movie simply because they know others are going to say it sucked. Somehow they are more intellectual or have a better eye for fine films than the rest of us laymen. Don't worry you can still be considered a good film critic and tell the truth. Just get real, this movie was bad and you know it.

Great mix of suspense, sci-fi, and drama.

If you like get-the-bad-guy suspense thrillers and also liked Back to the Future or you are a Star Trek fan, you'll love this movie. It even has a Sixth Sense-ish / Stir of Echoes type of feel to it. The plot was laid out well and surprisingly the whole future/past sci-fi issues were handled with some believable consistency. As an added plus this movie didn't have any sexual themes or foul language.

Would have been a good movie had the ending revealed something plausible.
18 August 2001
This movie will keep you not wanting to get up from your couch as this is one of those movies where you are hanging on just waiting to the explanation of why things are happening as they are. HOWEVER, The problem is when you finally get that explanation and you actually think about it you'll be upset. The ending reveals an answer that is so incredibly unplausible that it's an insult to the viewers intelligence. The movie "Speed" was more believable than this movie.

This movie made it only because it was so PC

I know I'm in the minority here, but I swear the only reason this movie did so well is because the main character(Tom Hanks) was gay and had AIDS. Sure Tom Hanks was a good actor in the movie, I'll give everyone that, but other than his acting what was so great about this movie? The whole movie is just geared around making you feel sorry for someone that is persecuted for having AIDS and being gay. I'm of course not trying to make light of persecutions, but I felt this whole movie lacked any substance. It was just a good actor trying to make you feel sad because of the situation he was in. It was just a shallow movie that lacked an interesting plot.
