My Dinner with Andre (1981)
Thank God They Didn't Have Dessert
This wasn't a good movie, but it WAS a mesmerizing dinner conversation between Wallace Shawn and Andre Gregory. It was what Hitchcock once called "Pictures of people talking", not cinema. It would have made a decent podcast. A bit boring but still interesting, thank God they didn't have dessert!
Ordinary People (1980)
A TEN if there ever was one!
Movies should instill an emotion in the audience, good or bad. Lawrence of Arabia and The Godfather are considered two of the best movies ever made, and they are, but neither of them instill in me more emotion as Ordinary People and I've viewed all three at least 6 or more times.
Lawman (1971)
ZOOM ZOOM and More ZOOM
This was very good but the cinematographer must have gotten a new zoom lens, because he used it so much I got vertigo.
Midway (2019)
Good movie - Poor tailoring
An excellent depiction of the Battle of Midway, the turning point in the Pacific Theater In WWII. The biggest detraction for me though was the poorly pressed and tailored officers coats. It showed me the importance of a competent costume department.
Killing Gunther (2017)
Waste of time
I want my life back. This was one of the worst movies I've ever seen. It tried so hard to be funny that it wasn't. Arnold redeemed it slightly at the very end, and that's why I gave it a one instead of a zero
Cut Bank (2014)
A Simple Plan redux
After reading the reviews, I didn't think this would be a very good movie. This had an excellent story and a superb cast all around. I could see a little of the movie Fargo in it but it reminded me more of the movie A Simple Plan. I love this movie. I also liked the actor Michael Stuhlburg who went to my alma mater as a "cherub". I have to award this an 7.5-8.
Midsommar (2019)
Good news Bad news
The bad news: This was the wackiest, most insane, Unintelligible, pointless movie I've ever seen The good news: It was well-made and showed me that the Swedes can be unbelievable party animals.
Rites of Autumn: The Story of College Football (2002)
Terrific !!
This is an absolutely terrific and well done documentary about the history of college football. It features some of its well-known coaches, players, and famous rivalries. Burt Reynolds provides a comforting and professional narration. I've watched the series multiple times and have given it as a gift to my friends who love college football. I can't think of a single thing wrong with it except that it's now almost 20 years old.
The Dinner (2017)
Nearly a complete waste of time
It was very well-acted, well edited and well shot, but I found myself wanting it to end. But it had no end..... It wasn't a COMPLETE waste of time, but it tried very hard to be.
The Butler (2013)
Presidents Ford and Carter Dissed
Oprah was great but the other performances were mediocre and the story was just not all that interesting. In fact, I couldn't wait until the butler served dessert and we could all leave the theater. I dozed off for a few minutes and I must have missed Presidents Ford and Carter. Robin Williams was an awful IKE, Cuzack was an awful Nixon and Liev Schrieber was an awful LBJ. It seemed as if they tried to stuff in as many famous name actors as they could, whether they were good for their roles or not. Also, I had thought the name of the movie was just "The Butler" but it's "Lee Daniels' The Butler" - I don't personally know Lee Daniels, but he must have a huge ego problem.
Apocalypto (2006)
One of the Best Movies of the Year
This was a creative, original, entertaining motion picture that I initially didn't think I'd enjoy. Two and a half hours of reading subtitles is about my limit and I'd really like to see Mel Gibson do a movie in English for a change. Basically, if you had "The Naked Prey", "The Last of the Mohicans", "Rambo", and "Predator" together in a tumbler and had the concoction "shaken, not stirred", then added a twist of Lamaze-style childbirth and a splash of human sacrifice, you would get "Apocalypto". The story is fresh, well-told, the acting incredibly good and the cinematography superb. My only concern is that this movie is certainly not for everyone, mainly because of the blood and gore and it's not very uplifting. There are more hearts torn from chests than in "The Last of the Mohicans" and more beheadings than in Tim Burton's "Sleepy Hollow". The good guys are easy to tell from the nasties, as they all have great teeth, while the bad guys all seem to be wearing bad braces. One of the best movies of the year!
