I agree that this film is depressing. It brings out a lot of issues for viewers. I think, maybe, that's what it was intended to do. The self destruction of the young prostitute was heart wrenching. More than the plot, I enjoyed the costume design.

Not the first in "retro" genre

I often believed that this film was the first 50's type retro film. But I was surprised to find out that the "Last Picture Show" predated this film by two years. I admit that they were both very different films. Still, I wonder if the makers of "American Graffiti" were in any way inspired by "Picture Show".
