Nomadland (2020)
A beautiful, saddening moving prose
It's difficult to appreciate for non-Americans or non-nomads, but still a masterpiece. Its relaxed structure and melancholic tone feel novel in films. Reminds me of Greek mythology, Chinese supernatural legends, and Studio Ghibli.
Judas and the Black Messiah (2021)
The best historical film I have watched
A 98% true account of historical events, with perfect plot, performance, and music. Best viewed after Chicago Trial of Seven, to appreciate the political and social background of this heroic story. Salute to Fred Hampton, Bobby Seale and the other heroes in the great struggle for racial justice.
Funan (2018)
A romantic imagination of hell
Compared to the actual remaining sites and exhibits in Cambodia today, this tragedy is a little bit too romantic, soft and European for the genocide committed by Khmer Rouge. However, the animation and story are well made and fitted to its theme. My reflection goes back to the historical Funan and Angkar states in Cambodia that rose and fell independently throughout more than 1000 years, and draws a conclusion that civilization is simply too difficult to sustain in a tropical rainforest.
