Seatbelt Psychic (2018– )
1/10
Loved This Show Until I Did Some Research!
3 February 2024
Nobody likes a good medium more than I do! I have been to some of the best.. legitimate clairvoyant mediums and psychics who were well known, on a personal level, in the circles I traveled with.

After watching a few episodes of Seatbelt Psychic, my first thought was that Thomas John was amazing. Most mediums have a high batting average, but they can't always get names.. and they might be a little hesitant on some of their images because either the message doesn't make sense, or the deceased spirit is not great at projecting. But Thomas seems to have no problems deciphering the transmissions at all, so I thought "Wow! He's incredible!" Yet.. some things bothered me.

For one thing, every person who got into the cab was dressed to the nines, with full makeup, jewelry, coiffed hair.. And oddly, they don't give an address and he doesn't ask. They all sit scrunched to the left. They don't see the cameras? And one woman looked familiar to me, from another show.

Another thing that gave me pause was his demeanor, which is unlike the psychics I have known. People who have the ability to communicate with spirits are people who have a high degree of empathy. He did not exude empathy, and was strangely quiet whenever someone cried or had a question about an emotional matter, such as a suicide. Mediums don't do that. They don't take the pauses that he takes, to the extent that he does. They are quick to comfort, or to say something positive. Also, they show emotion. He does not.

Curious, I googled Thomas John.. and I learned.. a LOT!!

Hundreds of people tell the same story all over the internet.. on Yelp, for example, and at the BBB. His ratings are 1 star, but the reviewers keep saying "I don't want to give a star, but it won't let me do zero stars". All but a miniscule few rant about how they paid hundreds, even thousands of dollars, for readings, which are typically for a year away, but then the readings get rescheduled.. and rescheduled again.. and again.. and again. At some point they tire of the runaround and ask for a refund, but are told "there are no refunds". This goes on with countless emails and reschedules, but the readings never happen. They are told that there was a technical glitch, or he has family problems, or he was in a terrible accident. Meanwhile, these people, who never get their money back, receive emails constantly, offering "specials", including for periods where they were given a cancellation. .. In one instance where an actual reading was given (there are precious few readings given), the father had paid for his 2 teenage daughters to get 15 minute readings. One daughter got a reading that ran over. The other daughter did not get a reading. The father managed to contact Thomas, who said that the first daughter didn't stop the reading at 15 minutes (it's not her job to end it - it's his!), so he wouldn't honor a reading for the other child.

I also learned that Thomas John has a criminal record. He used to pose as a landlord for apartment rentals listed on Craigslist, and then the unsuspecting public would come out to meet with him, and hand him the down-payment for the apartment that he has no affiliation with. That speaks volumes about his character.

Finally, I went to IMDb and looked at the show's cast list. Those random passengers are all actors, with acting credits for other shows that they have been on!

I feel bad for those scads of folks that gave him money, most of whom were never meant to receive readings. This guy is a total scam artist, and a good one! Based on the number of people who have claimed that they paid him several hundred dollars via PayPal, Venmo, CashApp, ApplePay, and credit card, and got nothing in return - I'm guessing million$!

There are very real, very superb psychic mediums in this world. I don't know if the Seatbelt Psychic has any ability at all (I'm guessing not, because his feedback doesn't reflect one with a high enough vibration to have a sixth sense), but if you read the complaints against him you would certainly think twice about putting any faith in his seatbelt readings.

So, my advice is - watch if you find it entertaining, but if you are interested in authentic paranormal or metaphysical viewing, you might want to "change the channel"!

Woulda Coulda Shoulda
14 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not a big fan of action flicks; I watched this for Nic Cage (who is so very ruggedly handsome here, by the way) and the Cayman Island scenery.

There is sooo much more they could have done with this film! For one thing, they could have added colorful scenes of "grandpa" in and around his paradisiacal home, bonding with his family and enjoying the island life.

They could have given some insight on whether or not Jimmy lived or died.

They could have had more interactions (of the non-violent kind) and more humor (I mean, other than creative ways of killing people) between the main characters.

Most of all, they could have given us a more satisfying ending. I would love to have seen the family basking on the beach, drinking pina coladas. Instead, we see them separated, with the mom and daughter being sent away by the good (?) guys, who gave off more of a villainous vibe, in my opinion. In fact, this rates right down there with some of the most disappointing movie endings I've ever seen. Maybe there should be warnings applied to films that leave us in limbo: "Rated LE for Lame Ending".

This movie is nothing but guns and death. It lacks heart and depth. It you take away the awesome island duds Cage was wearing, and the dialogue between Sarah and her captor, you might as well be watching rookies at target practice. It would be just as satisfying.

If you want to hear 90 minutes of Screaming and Yelling..
18 November 2023
I'm sorry, but I just could not enjoy this film. I love old movies, and Sandy Dennis, so I thought it would be a fun evening. .. And it WAS fun - for as long as it took to show the opening credits, which offered some vintage scenes of the "olden days", when I was young.

The acting is spot-on, and the writing is superb, as would be expected. But "Oh my Gawwwd..", Lemmon's yelling and screaming was just never ending throughout the entire movie! I went away feeling drained, as if I'd been battered for an hour and a half. I was gratefully relieved when the pounding stopped and peace and quiet reigned once again.

If you don't mind having to endure continual ranting and raving in order to enjoy the plot, then by all means watch this movie for the appreciation of Lemmon, Dennis, and Neil Simon's talented contribution. (But you might want to have ear plugs on hand, and activate the captions button.)

Fun Concept... Mediocre Performances
2 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I selected this movie on Prime because of the subject matter - Parallel Universes - and for that reason it was a fairly enjoyable watch. From start to finish though, it was predictable. I expected Jake #1 to change places with Jake #2, so, no disappointment there. I also expected Jake #2 to attempt to take back his own life, and it was obvious that he planned to throw his imposter back thru the portal into his own miserable existence. And that's okay, because it's what I hoped would happen. Some reviewers expressed surprise, even calling it a "twist", but for me it went along exactly as expected. I feel that it could have been a much better production, starting with casting.

I wanted to step into the wormhole myself and slap that harpy of a wife. She had no redeeming qualities whatsoever. The character was wholly one-sided and grated on my nerves. In addition, the actor who played her was not very believable, especially as it pertained to the portal scenes. Almost any reaction to such an amazing phenomenon would have been more realistic than her blasé response. She was about as awestruck as a kid opening up a math book. The male lead wasn't much better. He handled the mechanics okay, but performed without depth. Lead performers should have charisma and a wide range of emotions and expressions. Here, it was lacking. Ditto for Jake's friend, who exhibited zero warmth or personality.

I take it back about there not being a twist. I just remembered - there was one surprising event at the end that was just perfect. (Think "Philadelphia Experiment"). That was the best part of the movie!

All in all, it was a nice way to spend an hour and a half because there are such limited films with themes like alternate worlds, time travel, and the like. I just think that, even on a shoestring budget, they could have put more oomph, more wonder, more animated performances into this one.

Could Have Been Superb, But, No
18 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I would have rated this movie higher if it weren't for the crappy ending that left me feeling that I wasted 2 hours!

The vibrant 50's color palette was like dessert for the eyes; they did an amazing job on the sets, costumes, cars.. And the music was simply delightful. The actors' performances were spot on. But the story..? The story could have been amazing.. it was like a modern version of the Stepford Wives.. however, it fell short. It was as if the writer was on a roll and then nodded off, and then the alarm clock rang and he ran out of time and just wrote "The End". I felt like throwing something at the TV.

Horror is a Broad Term
25 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
There are so many different types of movies in the horror section, that they could easily be further divided into other headings. You have classic scary horror flicks like Poltergeist, The Exorcist, and The Shining, for those who enjoy heart pumping terror. You have slasher horror movies, such as Chainsaw Massacre, Scream, and Candyman, which are definitely not my cuppa tea, but a lot of folks evidently enjoy them. Then there are the "horror" films that keep you enthralled with their mysterious plots and twists, brilliant writing and performances, and a few unexpected jolts, ala The Sixth Sense, The Others, and Misery. While their scream factor is hardly comparable to true horrors, such as "It", they are by far my favorite kind of film entertainment. Not everyone wants to see teenagers getting picked off at a remote cabin, nor body parts being severed and strewn about like tree limbs.

It was the humor that I loved about this movie. Sorry About The Demon is described as "Comedy/Horror", so if the reviewers here were disappointed that is wasn't scarier, they should have just passed on it. For me, it was wholly refreshing to watch a character refuse to cower in fear, but instead stand up to the demon. And not just flip the proverbial bird (figuratively speaking) to the squatter from Hell, but to do so with an innocent nonchalance. Will is an utterly charming jack-of-all-trades who bakes cakes, and multi-tasks between his customer service job and altercations with ghosts.

So, for me, the ghosts' failure to evict Will, and the protagonist's deadpan attitude, is what made the movie enjoyable. I did not watch it for the demonic theatrics and slime. In fact, I was hoping the sprinklers would turn on and alleviate the ick factor.

Finally - Something Different!
11 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Judging by many of the reviews (aka, disgruntled viewers) most people still can't handle the idea of anything paranormal. They all want their safe, tried and true ordinary stories that play by the laws of mundane physics. Well, not me!

This story took an unexpected turn, to say the least. There have been so few films I've seen, with twists that shocked me. The Sixth Sense was my favorite twist of all time. The Others was another good one. Granted, Behind Her Eyes did not provide a happy ending, and I love happy endings. But that's okay because it was worth it to see a plot being used that you just never see in movies.

It's crazy how upset so many folks were to see an otherworldly element enter the story. I guess they are happy with all the mainstream films that involve chase scenes, revenge, violence, and even graphic gore. Not me! I loathe the banal movies they constantly churn out for us. It's generally years between what I consider great movies.. for example, 13 years' wait between the Avatars.

You can keep your John Wicks, Chainsaw Massacres, Zombies, and Hostage/Kidnap/Torture movies. Give me fantasy, metaphysics, time travel, alternate dimensions, ETs, reincarnation, and ghosts any time!

Brilliant All The Way Through!
6 March 2023
I gave this 10 stars without hesitation; it was THAT good! Kathleen Madigan is one of the best comedians I've ever had the good fortune to be entertained by. Most Stand-ups' spiels have their high points and low points, but Madigan's was funny from start to finish. Not just funny, but unique. She is a brilliant writer with impeccable delivery. I can't wait for her next special!

Um.. I thought I was done, but apparently you cannot leave a review here unless it meets a 600 character quota. WT. .? Why? Why can't we say what we want to say in just a few lines, or a paragraph? ... 13 to go.. 3, 2, 1.

The New Partridge Family (2005 TV Movie)
6/10
Good Show - Bad Format
7 December 2022
I read all the reviews here - but I disagree with them. In my opinion, it's not the actors (I thought they were great!), and it's not the writing that made this version of The Partridge Family a Fail. It's the camera work and the reality show format.. but especially the camera work (which is why I didn't rate more stars).

Hand-held camera cinematography is the worst! It makes one feel physically ill, and makes everything on the screen look shaky... makes you feel like you want to pop a xanax. One of the things I liked most about the original is the still camera sitcom format. It was relaxing, and it drew you into the subject's world. Hand held? You know you're watching something from afar.. you're not temporarily suspending your reality and entering the Partridge Family world.

The reality show format was also a bad idea, pretty much for the same reason .. it does not draw you in. If this show had been filmed with still cameras and done in a sitcom (not reality show) format, I believe that viewers would have liked it and accepted it. True, it's not exactly the same. The actors are different. The time is different. But the story is very similar and entertaining. My favorite is the new Danny Partridge - that's some good casting. I also loved seeing Danny Bonaduce enter the scene. Not too crazy about making him gay though.. there was no purpose for that twist.

Some reviewers found French Stewart too "mean" as Reuben Kincaid. I did not. Sure, they made him out to be a real a-hole initially (as the impetus to cost him his job and insert him as manager to the Partridge Family), but before the 20 minutes were up he greatly softened, having typical Reuben-type repartee with Danny while lying on a bunk bed like one of the kids. That's very "Reubenesque".

I actually never heard of this remake until today (in 2022), but if I had seen it, and if it had excluded the hand held camera style and reality show format, I would have loved it.. and I think many other viewers would have loved it as well. We want to relax with family shows like this - not feel like we've had 5 cups of coffee!

Not Cookie Cutter
27 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed this movie so much more than 99% of other rom-coms! Finally, something a little bit different. The others always follow certain plot points: male lead is a rich playboy who has to make a business trip; he falls for the poor social worker or wedding planner. They fight. They make up. The end. ... Or: Ice Princess in a power suit is sent to a remote location to trouble-shoot, falls in love with beloved local Dudley Do-right, who melts her heart. She saves the town's workers by keeping the factory afloat.. but not until the love interest forgives her for not disclosing the truth about her original mission. ..

I'm happy to say, this one veers from the standard script.

I don't know what the complaints are about the CG.. I guess we have a lot of techies watching. I never even noticed. In fact, I was elated by the beautiful scenery!

"No chemistry"?! Were we watching the same flick? Unlike what you find in many rom-coms, I thought this couple had great chemistry! The way they looked at each other, and the time it took to slowly develop their feelings, came across as very believable to me. I loved them together. .. BUT, I would have liked a longer, more satisfying ending. It did answer the question of their future, but the payoff should be longer than 5 seconds.

There are many morally outraged reviewers here. (I wonder how many of them actually live perfectly chaste and ethical lives?). The female lead did not intend to betray her fiance. Feelings happen. They had an intimate experience because something that powerful is virtually impossible to resist. And frankly, it was necessary for her to acknowledge that her heart was with this man more-so than with her fiance. She was in denial. We're talking about a life altering choice here. If my engaged Newfoundlander grandmother hadn't met my grandfather while shopping for her trousseau in Nova Scotia, there are a couple hundred people who would not be alive today, including myself. There are times when you have to follow your heart - not your obligations.

All in all it was a nice story that had more heart than the typical cookie-cutters. But I would have placed the young woman in a different setting than spending hours in a car in a frigid, snowy climate. And I would have had her meet her birth mother.

So, in summary, actors were great - story was refreshing - but the writers could have paid more attention to certain details.

Moved Me To Tears
11 November 2022
I don't know how this episode can have such a blah rating. It was one of the best sitcom episodes of its time! The story was especially interesting, the location scenes were a lovely reprieve from the studio set, the whale footage was moving, and the song.. OMG, that song.. gave me chills and had me too choked up to eat the food that my tears were falling onto!

The Whale Song should have been released - I know it would have been at the top of the charts.. it's eerily BEAUTIFUL! This is one of those rare numbers with both a melody and lyrics that have the ability to stir even the prickliest of hearts.

"Whale song, I hear what you say This may be the last time you're passing this way..

"Song of the whale so sweet and so clear But no song at all to the ones who won't hear And if people don't listen, and if people don't know Might the song of the man be the next song to go.."

The Rookie: Day in the Hole (2022)
Season 4, Episode 22
5/10
Worst in Series
17 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I love The Rookie and I will continue to watch and enjoy it. But sometimes the writers just miss the mark. A Day in the Hole was definitely a miss.

The story that Nolan was being punished (yet again!) by being sent out into a one-horse desert town was ludicrous. I hated the violent assault by a gang of thugs, I didn't care about the non-Rookie cast, and the fights were unrealistic. Bailey, a diminutive firefighter, wipes up the floor with an ogre, but doesn't bother to pick up his gun after she knocks him out. The dude in the kitchen is confronted by a criminal with a knife, and that's the last you see or hear of that scenario. Many of the bad guys are shot, but in the end they are all quite alive and kicking in the jail cell. I derived no pleasure from the desert scenes whatsoever.

The only thing I did like in this episode was the Lucy-Tim interaction. I always loved those two and hoped that Tim would eventually come around. Some of the reviewers complained that the scene was cut short and we were left hanging, but that was not my take on it. The look on Tim's face when it finally struck him that he has feelings for Lucy was very gratifying. They have next season to follow this thread. I would be disappointed if they kissed and became a couple in the space of a 20-second scene.

The first few years of The Rookie were the best, when the crew drove around LA, tackling funny perps and then serious criminals, with Nolan being both funny and extraordinary. I would like to see more of that, and less of boring Okay Corral shootouts.

No Satisfaction Whatsoever
4 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I love David Sedaris' books, so I thought I would like this movie.

I can't say that I hated the movie. It was interesting to watch. But it was, basically, a series of unsatisfying encounters with unpleasant yokels.

My reason for watching this flick was the anticipation of seeing the "Sedaris" character throw out one witty, acerbic retort after another. Sadly, C. O. G. Is bereft of zingers.

We never got to see John get his due desserts. We never got to see David (aka, Samuel) get back on track with his true sense of self. And we never got to see him reconcile with his mother. He is left on a deserted road in the middle of Timbuktu, as lost at sea as he was at the start of the movie. Senseless. Nothing resolved, nothing learned, nothing gained. While John was spewing venom at David, I was praying for the latter to put him in his place, ala the Sedaris snark. Alas, it was not to be.

A Princess for Christmas (2011 TV Movie)
6/10
Loosely Stitched.. Like a Basted Hem
21 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
There were some lovely elements holding this Christmas tale together (Sam Heughan, castle, snow, scenery) like a basted hem.. barely. If only the makers of the movie had put as much attention into casting a couple with charisma, or into details such as wardrobe, as they did in the sets and scenery, then this could have been a jewel of a movie.

The clothes they dressed Jules in were just hideous. They were outdated and frumpy, such as you would find at a Salvation Army thrift store. "But at least they will dress her in an elegant gown for the Ball, and fix her hair!", I assumed.

Well, I assumed wrong. Clearly, they sent some children into an arts & crafts class, gave them some Elmer's glue, cheap sequins, and scraps of costume rejects and said "Have at it, kids!" I don't think I have ever seen an uglier, tackier dress in all my life! Ditto for her hair. It was too black (a lighter shade or some highlights would have softened her look), and in a woefully outdated style. And as if making her look like an octogenarian wasn't bad enough, they chose an actress who had a limited range of emotions and zero chemistry with the prince, who evidently fell in love with her literally overnight and married her a nano-second after that. (Compare Ashton's chemistry with Jules to Jamie's chemistry with Claire; we're talking about night and day here).

Another casting fail, in my opinion, was Milo. He was just not right for this role. Worse, the actor was nearly twice the age of the character he played.

Sam Heughan was perfect, as always.. however, his role was so limited that the idea of him being in love with Jules was simply preposterous. It's like as if a year had been removed from the plot.. the year where the romance was cultivated and bloomed. We didn't get to see that. We saw them do a waltz, kiss, and marry.

Criticism aside, I still enjoyed this for the Christmas cookie that it was. I don't expect Gone With The Wind in these cut and paste holiday treats. I watch it for the scenes of snow on evergreens, and quaint towns decked out for the holidays, with Christmas tree lots and jingle bell sound effects. In that respect, I was not disappointed.

The Scenery is Lovely
20 November 2021
I expected a formulaic story and was not disappointed; if there are any original Christmas flicks out there I haven't come across them. It's girl meets boy, quickie romance ensues, secret comes out, couple splits, couple reunites, happy ending. As predictable as April rain.

It was a nice way to pass the time though, and the scenery is a delight to see. My biggest problem with this movie is that it lacks the aura of romance. Yes, you heard that right. While the premise is a romance, the performance is devoid of emotion. I never, at any time, felt any kind of love or connection between the two main characters. I couldn't have cared less about their union. They might as well have been kissing cardboard for all the depth they portrayed.

The young, wheel-chair bound princess, however, was believable and relatable. She was the heart of the story.

Clearly, the main actors were chosen for their bone structure and not for their emoting skills. Try using soap opera actors next time.. now those thespians really know how to exude passion!

Missing the Fun
7 October 2021
I don't know if it's because it was Live, but this was the only Conners (including Roseanne) episode that bored me from start to finish.

I miss the Roseanne show - it was one of the best series on television, EVER! The Conners was good too when presenting Mark's gender scenes (which worked because of his confident cheerfulness), Darlene's perfectly timed sarcasm, Becky and her boyfriend's unique and refreshingly sweet relationship, Dan and family's lighthearted barbs in their iconic kitchen and living room, and Jackie's endearing quirkiness (before they turned her into a joke).

Now it's all about Ben and Darlene's constant fighting, Harris' perpetually hostile disposition, and Louise and Dan's boring relationship. The show is known for it's dark humor, which worked in the past, but now it's just plain dark - the humor quotient has been extracted like an infected tooth.

As for the political bent.. I'm a liberal myself, but I want to throw up every time someone brings up masks and vaccines. For Pete's sake, we have enough doom and gloom in the real world.. can't our "comedies" just give it a rest already?! I am waiting for the comedic brilliance to return.. I tune in to laugh, not cry.

Grey's Anatomy: Song Beneath the Song (2011)
Season 7, Episode 18
9/10
Brilliant Composition!
19 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
So many reviewers here panned the episode because it was an unexpected musical. I get it. Ordinarily, I don't like musicals myself. But I got past my initial "oh crap, it's a musical!" gripe, and began to appreciate the brilliance of this episode.

It took some serious skill for them to piece this together with the music parts and the surgery storyline parts, meshing each piece perfectly from start to finish, like an audio-visual symphony! And I love the way they juxtaposed the concern and panic of the doctors with the ethereal scenes of Callie watching as from an out of body experience while cast members sang beautiful, pertinent songs (my personal favorite being Save A Life).

I think a lot of viewers were unable to appreciate the brilliance behind this presentation because they were so put off by the musical concept that they couldn't simply let go and let the visuals draw them in. It wasn't some cheesy showcase for actors to show off their vocal talents such as we've seen in other shows, where they just dance around the place and sing for the sake of singing. This episode's tenderness and unique collage-style editing made it, in my opinion, a work of art. And when Callie's higher consciousness jump-started her out of the coma, that was just the finishing touch!

Grey's Anatomy has a knack for presenting a spiritual element (afterlife scenes, such as in this episode with Callie watching her body and the action around it, and other episodes, such as when Izzy flatlined and saw the recently deceased O'Malley in the metaphorical elevator.) The writers do the ethereal scenes so subtly that if you are spiritual you can interpret it as death or out of body, but if you're not a believer, then it passes as a side-effect of a brain tumor or coma. This is absolutely one of the most exciting, cleverly written shows I've ever seen!

In conclusion, I can forgive the show for springing a musical on us, as this was beautifully done. Plus, it was interesting to find out that the characters that we've come to know so well are, in real life, such amazing vocalists.

Insightful Background Bonus
9 April 2021
Having read, and thoroughly enjoyed Noah's book "Born a Crime", I was thrilled to come across this documentary as it brought to life some of the places and people from the book.

Trevor is my favorite comedian although it wasn't always so. When the Daily Show announced Noah as the successor to the great Jon Stewart, I was quite disappointed. True, I enjoyed Trevor's bits on the show.. but I didn't think he could fill Stewart's shoes. I was wrong!

After watching some of his stand-up specials, I was just blown away by Trevor Noah's brilliant mind and inimitable wit. The man is simply extraordinary - a stand-out among stand-ups. And even as impressed as I am with his comedic talent, I was even more in awe of his accomplishments when I read his bio and learned about his larger than life upbringing in an extremely oppressive culture. What an incredible journey!

I don't laugh easily; I'm one of those folks who cringe when someone tells a joke, because chances are I won't find it funny. But Trevor Noah is one of the few comics who frequently has me laughing 'til it hurts.

I enjoyed this documentary as a bonus insight into Noah's background, and I love that it also includes some clips of his standup. If you are a Trevor Noah fan you should enjoy watching this slice of his life because he is more than a comedian - he is a catalyst for bringing people of every diversity together for a common laugh at themselves and the crazy world we live in.

Superstore: All Sales Final (2021)
Season 6, Episode 15
10/10
A Finale Extraordinaire!
28 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I have enjoyed every second of this series from start to finish and never been bored or disappointed in the slightest. The writing, the cast, the unique and wonderful characters, the set design.. every element of Superstore has been stellar... and yet.. I still didn't think they could do justice to the storylines in just a half hour. ..... But, boy, was I wrong!

I have seen scads of finales in my life, but this one was the creme de al creme! One of the best, if not the best - hands down!

They wrapped up everyone's story arc without making it seem rushed or unrealistic. They did justice on the Jonah-Amy front - and then some - which must have been a heck of a challenge to the writers, considering how little time they had to package it in.

Garrett's final mic announcement was the icing on the cake... and the picnic scene was everything I could have hoped for and more! But the finale kept on giving.. as the scene with the stars gave us the cherry on top of the scrumptious treat that was "All Sales Final".

If ever there was a perfect series comedy on television, it was Superstore. Props to everyone who made it the brilliant gem that it was, and for giving the audience an ending that was sheer perfection!

Gorgeous Rare Footage of my Favorite Animal
6 January 2021
Some viewers complained that there was no mention of Tibet. I am sure that that was a stipulation from the Chinese faction, otherwise you know they would have included the information. You can't just go into China and do whatever you want. There is protocol.

Another complaint people have is that there was minimal footage of the snow leopards. Not surprising! There's a rare leopard somewhere that people have spent decades trying to film, and were ecstatic when they got a couple of still photos at night. And yet, this crew, spending months in extreme conditions, managed to get a good bit of hi-res film of a mother snow leopard and her cubs, basking and playing.

It's not a lot of footage compared to what you'd get if you went to film flamingos in Florida, or monkeys in the rainforest. But for tracking a rare and elusive animal to the ends of the earth, and waiting months to film it, this is quite a coup! I didn't mind that most of the film centered on the crew and the elements; I enjoy people stories. Every moment of being able to see the snow leopards in the wild though ... that was priceless!

This was a very enjoyable documentary for me.. the human experience, the spectacular scenery, and close up views of snow leopards.. I got what I came for!

A Little Wake up Call for your Soul?
29 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I think that a lot of people need/needed to see this movie. I know I did. After spending a couple of weeks with (the virus) and feeling discouraged and depressed, this was the perfect reminder that the world is still full of wonder and that everyone needs encouragement and inspiration on this challenging trek we call Life.

I think Pixar did an awesome job creating the souls and realms. It couldn't have been easy to come up with "people" that are not people and realities that are not earthly.

The ending got to me. Good thing I have kleenex nearby. And I would like to add that I was especially impressed with how well they presented 22's emotional transformation.

I was satisfied with Joe's ending - but was quite disappointed at not getting at least a cameo of the little one's new existence. I sat through the long credits, thinking that the movie was incomplete without that glimpse. It never came.

Dave Chappelle: Equanimity (2017 TV Special)
10/10
Standup Is Not For The Stupid
21 October 2020
I will concede that there are limits to good taste.. but something really has to be crass for me to be offended. If a comedian was an obvious misogynist and glorified rape, I would be disgusted. If a comedian riffed on "hilarity" of child abuse, I would get up and walk out. But when a brilliant writer of comedy, with perfect timing and impeccable delivery, that has charisma and a rapport with the audience, has us laughing at ourselves over the idiosyncrasies of our race, gender, religion, economic standing, etc., then I am totally entertained and not the slightest bit offended.. because THIS is what makes comedy comedy! Finding humor in our humanness is the very core of comedy, and has always been the stem from which comedy sprouts.

Chappelle is, as others have pointed out (and I can think of no better descriptive) the Master of stand-up! I laughed my ample derriere off from start to finish - all the while in awe of Dave's brilliant mind. His humor is topical and relevant, and it's obvious, to anyone who doesn't view life as deadpan serious, that he is the consummate "Every-man".. meaning, he has a way of relating to, and appreciating, every kind of human being. That's important in comedy.

A successful comic must have the skill to extract and exploit the nuances of social behavior if they want to make people laugh. If you think you're going to be entertained by a comic getting up on stage and cracking jokes about the weather, or their dog's cute antics.. well, you might chuckle.. but you're not going to choke on your popcorn and laugh so hard that you cry, like you would if he (or she) did a bit about a behavior that is unique to you or your respective group. (For example, how Italians can't talk without making wild hand gestures, or how Canadians punctuate every other statement with an "eh?" We all - most of us, anyway - get a big kick out of seeing someone "do" us). Think of the difference between a caricaturist who over-emphasizes the subject's big ears and jowls, and minimizes his tiny chin - vs a caricaturist who draws a perfect likeness of the subject. The latter is just not funny. (Nor a caricaturist). Representative art can be skillful, but does not usually evoke any emotions. Might as well take a photograph.

I will always choose a Dave Chappelle routine over pretty much any other comedian. He's spectacularly funny, but he's also a man of depth. He brings up the point in this special, about how difficult it is for a performer to say or do anything in today's world without offending someone (and I would like to add, often with life-affecting repercussions). Sadly, he's not wrong. I hope our social climate becomes more tolerable in the near future, and that he returns to the stage to entertain those of us who understand the difference between satire and reality.

There's Irreverent.. and then there's Anthony Jeselnik
29 September 2020
I am not easily offended by off-color humor. I thought Sarah Silverman's irreverent Jesus Is Magic comedy special was hilarious. And the acerbic Bill Hicks was absolute genius. You can make fun of women, find humor in any nationality or ethnicity (to a point), you can poke fun of religions, you can mimic a surly teenager.. But you do NOT make a joke about Eric Clapton's little boy who died in a tragic accident! That is not funny. That is cruel. You can put any kind of spin on it, dress it up and put on the label of your choice.. but the only thing that "joke" was, was cruel! This so-called comic used just about the most heartbreaking thing he could think of as an opportunistic vehicle to establish himself as the crudest comedian on the circuit. Well congratulations Tony, you win the blue ribbon!

Great Series - Lackluster Ending
28 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I really loved this show, especially the first 2 seasons. But as so many have expressed in the reviews, the final season and its ending did not live up to the previous seasons.

I binge-watched.. simply could not tear myself away from the continuing episodes. It really is a good story and the actors were perfectly cast. My favorite character was Paddy; OMG, what brilliant acting by Ned Dennehy! Paddy is the epitome of a character that you can't help but love/hate. He's a resurrected spitfire Crocodile Dundee with a cache of surprises.

The third season, although still enjoyable to watch, had neither the richness of character nor story that the prior seasons had. For one thing, they introduced some corporate heavies that were never explained. Ostensibly, they wanted to experiment on the Risen, but it was only alluded to - nothing deeper than that. Their presence and purpose seemed almost incidental. I was still waiting for clarification of the original experiment and of the scientist and doctor behind it. We never got that. Both characters were killed off without the benefit of delving into their background. Somehow, some way, some kind of experiment regenerated dead bodies that came to life despite the decay, despite have been embalmed and entombed, and easily made their way up through the coffin and six feet of packed dirt. Okaaayy then.

Season 3 introduced a couple of new reanimated characters for no apparent reason. It wasn't a terrible thing, but it didn't add anything of value to the story. In fact, it took time away from the characters that we were already invested in and wanted to see more of. If Chi, one of the new characters, had made a difference (i.e., saved the Risen) at the end with his cultural ritual, then I could see merit in bringing him and Belle into the story at that late date. But it was not the case. These characters were nothing more than filler, as many others have pointed out.

Any good story resolves its mysteries at some point. This one failed on multiple counts. I wanted to know exactly what the assassins were. That they keep the universe in balance is not enough. Furthermore, why did Elishia and William want to escape their prior existence (as something other than human) to begin with? Living as a human was so appealing to them that they came here to escape their past. Viewers were not privy to the story behind that. And how did Elishia manage to raise several people from the dead - including 2 of them after she herself died? Why did she create a barrier and then need other Risens to test its boundaries? Was she not beholden to the barrier herself? Why couldn't the assassins find Elishia in her 4 years on earth? Why didn't the fabric of the universe crumble when SHE possessed a corpse? And speaking of raising the dead, why did they throw that bit in about Golgotha? Were they trying to say that Jesus was one of the keepers of the universal balance, who just happened to enter the Jesus body for a quick after-death experience? What was the purpose of that allusion - yet another unfinished morsel. This show is rife with unresolved aspects.

The ending was a colossal let-down. We rooted for all of these characters to live. We watched them run for their lives literally throughout the entire series, only to .. what.. quietly immolate themselves at the end? As if anyone could calmly walk into an inferno! It would be agony just to come within yards of such a fire, let alone walk into it. And how convenient that the universe balancing hunters could simply exit their instantly dissolving hosts, while the Risen were forced to endure the burning forest!

The whistle.. yet another enigma that was thrown into the mix without having been fleshed out. William conveniently had this little tool in his possession, then blew it at the end to impart the vital information to the living dead. Um.. so why didn't he toot that horn earlier on, saving a whole lot of time and pain for all? The writers could have found a way to include us in the experience of hearing what the Risen heard. They also could have given us a more satisfying ending, such as showing the re-deceased main characters in their new afterlife. Almost anything would have been better than the ending they gave us. It was so brief and anti-climactic. Too bad, because it really was wonderful until it went uncharacteristically divergent and culminated in such a slipshod wrap-up. ... Ultimately, I wanted to give this a 10 but due to the anemic ending and lack of storyline resolutions I had to lop off a couple of points.

I Gave Up
7 July 2020
I like Kevin Hart, but I didn't like this production. It was painful sitting through about 15 or 20 minutes of noise, crowds, rap, and other disjointed prelude. Finally, he came onstage and began a comedy routine. But he was so jittery and out of breath.. no connection to the camera.. even the sound was jittery. I was so uncomfortable that I finally gave up. If Kevin and his production crew finally settled down into a normal stand up routine, I will never know.

The one thing I did like: the sharp, sparkling cinematography of the city at night that they showed at the beginning. It was beautiful to look at.
