Who Done It? (1942)
Who Done It Scores!
Abbott and Costello amaze me. Where are the comedians today that even resemble these two in their dictum and style? They're profound comedians in every sense of the world.
Pheonmenally funny when finding the killers or chasing ghosts!
Who Done It is by far one of the duo's best films. Unlike the service comedies, it doesn't date easily, but rather highlights what it was like to be around during the Forties. A strong supporting cast, led by the able characters keep the laughs coming almost non-stop. Their chemistry with Lou Costello does not go unnoticed, either, by the sharp-eyed film fan. All in all, if I am showing only one A & C comedy to a group of students who have never viewed their work, this is the one I'd show.
The Genius Club (2006)
Very smart thriller with flaws.
I had the privilege to see this film before anyone else did at a KLTY radio promotion giveaway. The actors, Stephen Baldwin, Paula Jai Parker and others were in the audience with the director Tim Chey and 2 producers.
This is a well written & well acted thriller, but you must suspend your expectations about how plausible it is, cuz it ain't, and how the true genius, a well educated person could have easily blown up the city long ago is well
not realistic.
However, the credibility of this film grows as the evening wears on I actually felt like I was sitting with these geniuses deducing and trying to find answers. In the end, most of the people around me were in tears which caught me off guard.
Although the title of the movie (explained during the course of it for better understanding by the masses) is already potent in itself, something like "The World is Stupid" might have prevented it from prematurely disappearing from the (big) screens. And undeservedly too. For if you think only Grisham can make you believe the long-reaching arm of the law is usually equipped with a deadly weapon, you need to see this movie to really find out what an excellent legal suspense is all about. Helped by a masterfully wrought script that will slowly gripe your tripe, Tom Sizemore single-handedly carries it from start to finish in an Oscar- deserving fashion. Enjoy the puzzles, the world issues, the macabre, and Jack Scalia who plays the best president yet to hit a silver screen. And don't forget any of the clues en route or there will be holes in your puzzle when you're done.
I highly recommend the film for no other reason than the world is insane and no human being can solve it.
Cliffhanger (1993)
Stallone is in top form
Cliffhanger is a great film. I'm a Stallone fan.
This film, admittedly, is not the best of the genre but it is entertaining if you set aside the obvious parallels to films that came before. In fact, the script intentionally incorporates previous films by references. The one at the end was nail biting.
It could have been better in a few places and it certainly could have been worse. Better: have a little more animated performance from Stallone's partner, perhaps a little less gore and sadistic behavior by the Lithgow group and a bit more believability in the fire-fights.
Kudos to Mr. Harlin for keeping it from becoming worse! My wife and I enjoyed watching this film and would recommend it to any free-thinking adults looking for a fairly good film to watch after the kids are in bed. Don't forget the popcorn.
