Stowaway (2021)
Stowaway for a throw away
Yes, plot holes galore: a doctor self-sacrifices though she might be imperative to the other's survival; no one thinks to tie the oxygen tanks to their bodies so they just carry them like a lunch box, now limited to one handed tasks like holding on and climbing; rather than conserve oxygen by sleeping or artificially inducing comas, they double their consumption in risky, high energy action tasks. And yes, how did a large grown man get bolted into a compartment, from the outside, without being noticed. Was it a blind man who bolted him in? And really, Mission Control didn't have a means to take over the ship's systems from Earth, or measure to the gram what the ship weighed at prelaunch and launch. The essence of the mission was to see if algae could be grown to sustain life on Mars. Once that mission was botched, they might just as well all go to sleep and forget about it. Just such glaring omissions that it was not possible to enjoy. Bad writing! 😜 😜
For Life (2020)
Systemic Racism
I enjoyed "For Life" while he was in prison. It felt authentic, which is not easy to create in a subject so previously cliched. It showed surely that there is a dire need for Justice Reform.
Now I've just watched S2,E3. And it took a dive off a cliff. It's trying to prove that a woman, who pulled a gun on the doctors in order to get her son treated, was an okay thing to do. That sort of set me on edge. As his wife says "If you get here an acquittal that will entitle any of much future patients {she's a Registered Nurse} to pull a gun on me."
Then he interviews a white woman and black men who had previously been to the same hospital. The man says he "reported his pain level as an '8' but got nothing." Then she says she "reported her pain level as a '5' but the doctor GAVE HER A BOTTLE OF OXYCONTIN and asked her if she would like a prescription for more."
Now, I have to call BS! I was in a hospital for hitting my head, not long ago. There was a white guys screaming (!) in pain and begging for a pain pill. They just strapped him in bed and said it was because he was an addict. So?! Does that mean he's not in pain?
Moreover, I've also three crushed vertebrae. It took me a year to find a "pain specialist" who would prescribe pain killers. I'd been in the hospital three times and the most they'd do is give me ONE pain killer. I had to wait until I had a botched back surgery to get a prescription for one per day; they last about 4-5 hours, so I'm in pain a minimum of 14-hours a day.
And btw, any doctor who gave anyone, regardless, 'a whole bottle of painkillers, WOULD LOSE THEIR LICENSE. And you can fact check this. In fact, in about half the United States, a doctor can only prescribe 3-7 days of painkillers, maximum.
So, now the show has become about (fake) "systemic racism." And one the best qualities of this show {the desperate need for prison reform} just bit the dust.
Star Trek Beyond (2016)
Great visuals, but gets hokey...
I've been a Star Trek fan since forever. That said, it seems a bit contrived that all seven of the original Enterprise officers had descendants that not only looked just like their fathers or mothers, but took the exact same officer's jobs/positions - and so many years later, spoke with the same verbal accents. C'mon Simone Pegg, did you really think we're all so stupid that we couldn't follow the story without those "cloned" kids?!
The best new addition was Sofia Boutella as "Jaylah." And Zoe Saldana is much easier on the eyes than the original Uhura and a better actress.
In all, still fun with comedic relief and good fight scenes.
A Girl Like Her (2015)
Important - but please use real facts...
Please don't flame me for this. It's just about simple facts.
The movie was important; bullying is horrible for so very many reasons.
SPOILER ALERT:
However, it wouldn't be less important if one stuck with accuracy.
At the beginning, she goes into her mother's bathroom and takes out a bottle of pills. These pills were hand capsuled, nothing that would come from a pharmacy or a pharmaceutical manufacturer. - Then she takes maybe a dozen to twenty and overdoses. - At the hospital, the medic says, "Overdose, 750 milligrams of Hydrocodone." "750!?! - The "average" pill is 7.5 mg (that's seven point five). A very strong dose for one habituated might be 20 mg. So the girl would have to have taken 100 (one hundred!) average doses. SHE DID NOT! And doctors typically only give a maximum of a 30-day supply or 30 to 60 pills, which would have been more than enough to overdose most anyone. - So why the fake looking pills and why the exageration of her overdose? - Sorry for my nitpick. It was otherwise a good film.
The Blacklist: Philomena (No. 61) (2017)
Susan Blommaert as "Mr. Kaplan" ...
The last several episodes of The Blacklist have finally showcased Susan Blommaert as the character of "Mr. Kaplan." I say kudos to the producers and writers for teaming up to create the most interesting backstory ever on The Blacklist. I've long wondered about this character and finally something that far too many TV series avoid: ANSWERS! Thank you.
SPOILERS NOW: It seems a bit last minute but perhaps The Blacklist saved the best for last. They decisively divulge that Katarina Rostova had hired (years ago) the prior incarnation of Mr Kaplan to be the incredibly capable nanny for her baby, who then grows up to be Elizabeth Keene. Furthermore, Raymond's compulsion derive from that Katarina really did never tell him if he was Liz's father. And now we see the reason why Kaplan is more devoted to Liz than to Raymond. The whole story comes together at last with these episodes and promises to come to the most exciting conclusions in episodic TV history.
Before these episodes, many had been growing a bit weary with the criminal du jour formula of The Blacklist. But these episodes are the most intricately told and capably acted yet. They are the Big Reveal and the big payoff for being a fan of the series. They show who everyone really is in this intrigue. My only regret is the audience hadn't previously been delighted with the true talent of Susan Blommaert. So tune in for a genuine entertainment treat.
Working the Engels (2014)
Typically dysfunctional sitcom family who hit all the right notes - REVISED
SEE REVISION NOTES BELOW...
I've seen only the first episode. But I was looking forward to seeing Andrea Martin again, from "SCTV," where she was hilarious. I wasn't disappointed. She has pitch perfect timing as a very physical comedienne. One must "watch" her or lose some of the humor.
Andrea portrays Ceil Engel, the alcoholic matriarch of the clan, including her recently deceased lawyer husband who left his family $200k in debt. There are her three children: the cutie Kacey Rohl as Jenna, an under appreciate attorney and the glue that holds the family together; the quirky sexy Azura Skye as her over-the-top "reformed" sister; and hunky Benjamin Arthur as the brother, a full-time petty con artist and 2-bricks-short-of-a-full-load strong-arm brother.
Don't be dissuaded by the few meager reviews so far. See it yourself. Set your DVR. I'm a huge comedy fan: "2 Broke Girls, Hot In Cleveland, etc. And as is said, "Drama is easy, comedy is a bitch." It's not easy to be clever and funny. This initial show hits all the notes. I hope it maintains it's momentum. Give it a watch; it's a hoot.
**REVISION: After now having watched several of the episodes, the show actually lacks "momentum," i.e., it has not moved forward but rather sits spinning its wheels. It appears Andrea Martin plays only one character. Yes, she's zany but you'd better like that one or you won't enjoy the show. Benjamin Arthur is simply not believable as the brainless but ultra-sexy guy. The writers need to give their characters more dimension, quickly. Azura Skye does have some misbegotten sex appeal, even as someone who seems to have a bit of brain damage. Not unlike too many other misdirected shows, each episode is a bit of a repeat of the skit from the week before.-- So, I've lowered my rating down to a "4 or 5" - until the writers and director can figure out whether they can clean up this mess.
