Vores lykkes fjender (2006)
Malalai Joya Freedom Fighter
This documentary on Malalai Joya was an amazing inside look at the struggles Afghani and all Islamic face. When we think of Afghanistan we think more of the physical struggles with the Taliban and those who oppose the liberalism and democracy. This documentary reveals the real and true struggle and that is with the Afghani people trying struggling with their sometimes barbaric and traditional ways of life that leaves little or no rights to women. It portrays how the traditional followers of Islam vehemently oppose the liberal view of Islam that came to rise in this country with the arrival of the Americans and the west. Malalai Joya is one of many extremely brave women and men who daily face the threat of death in order to try and bring peace and order to a devastated and impoverished nation, abused by war, war lords, and oppressed sometimes by religion. I appreciated this documentary for the view it gave on the struggle for women's rights and people's rights and freedoms in that nation. It is a view that is seen less than the physical struggle yet the most important struggle in that nation is too bring the liberty and freedom to fulfillment.
Between You and Me (2005)
Loved the still shots!!!
I loved the still shot photography in Between You and Me. That time effort, shots and angles put into this alone is what made me enjoy this movie so much. I'm surprised that despite all the awards this short movie won (Best Experimental Film at the Triburton International Film Festival, Best Cinematography at the Gotham City International Film Festival, Best Short Film at the Vilnius Independent Film & Video Festival and in the Experimental Film category at Big Apple Film Festival) how little voting there is for this short film on IMDb, but I'm sure more might show up. Anyways, this was an outstanding job, the story wasn't anything groundbreaking but the way the short was put together in a sense was, so for that I gave this one an 8 out of 10. If you haven't seen it, watch and enjoy!!!
Benny's Video (1992)
Great Concepts, but boring voyage...
OK I saw this movie and I will admit I am not a fan of Heneke, I merely stumbled upon this movie, somehow I don't know. Anyways it had some great concepts and awesome foreshadowing in it and the ending really was dark and marvelous.
But it was all present in such a way that it was horribly boring to watch. It was tedious through the whole movie, and everything was slow and wretchedly so. This film could have been compressed into a lot shorter of a movie and come off as a way better performance but as it was I just can't say i enjoyed it overall.
I was glad when it was over, it had great promise and I can see why people enjoyed it but personally for myself I just couldn't take it. I know most fans of this movie will disagree but as an everyday movie viewer like myself, it was just to slow, all the concepts where there though and it was a good movie, but I couldn't take the pace, 4 out of 10.
Where's Mary Jane? (2003)
Worth a laugh or two
Haha well this was a rather short and somewhat hilarious documentary on Marijuana obviously. It was worth a few laughs and there was some clever camera edits.
Although very little was actually done to prove a point or make a case of any sort but it was worth a few laughs. Many many cameos by Canadian politicians and it was good to see Peter Mansbridge rocking it. Can't really say to much about this as it was more a fun film to play around with cutting film together and editing it.
I guess this is more a film that the many pot heads should be watching, unfortunately I guess too many of them aren't motivated enough to find this short and enjoy it.
But anyways a good quirky little short.
Sweden on $8 a Day (2004)
Good Canadian Short...
This was a short film done by 19 year old Morgan Rozender and its a story about a man. He's 28 and he has been doing nothing for the last 28 years. He worked at American Airlines and through this job and the unemployment benefits of Sweden he was able to fly around the world for the last 4 years, he quickly becomes addicted to this lifestyle.
Like any addict he barely has any time to enjoy any of the places he goes to but rather he just flies from city to city, country to country and he can barely keep track of whats happening. Meanwhile, while he is doing all this, nothing really, everyone he knows is advancing in life. Finally at the end of the film he runs out of his support, and he's forced to pay his own way and to turn to the thing that he really should have been doing in the first place, forwarding his life.
It's a clever film one that may deal with the turmoil of post graduation stress, the famed mid -20s life crisis. One's unsure of how to succeed in life, to balance fun, work, and everything it takes to survive. A few good views and points on life from a 19 year old. Good work.
Lip Service (1988)
It was a good movie
This was a good movie, another good Macy project, who also makes a brief cameo appearance as a guest on the show towards the end. This is a good example of real life where we see a clash of old vs new. Gil as a conservative traditionalist struggles to adapt to the changing world of news, Leonard bringing in the new form of news, gimmicky.
This was Macy's first and only attempt at directing in roughly twenty years, and I believe you can see his touch in this film. There is a lot of good character building and progression through out the film. As we see in the end Leonard's gimmicks are wearing thin as is his patience with the morning show and it's crew.
In the end we see that Gill, has redeemed himself and outshone Leonard, by writing the book that Gill, I assume was only joking about. Gill achieves success through his earlier and traditional ways, which everyone believes to be boring, and through this Gill even achieves fame and success where Gill is still stuck in the same newsroom which he had hoped he would have left behind after 1 year, yet 3 years later he is still stuck in the same room.
This was a good film by Macy, not as great as Fargo, Magnolia, or even The Cooler, but it was good. With some good smart humour injected at points in the movie just to keep it interesting enough. Based on this I'll give it a 6, cheers.
High (1968)
A Great Canadian Movie for it's time and budget
This was a great Canadian movie again for it's time and budget. Considering when this movie was shot Kent does some remarkable work with the photography in order to paint the psychedelic theme he was going for. The constant 60s psychedelic music playing through out this movie adds to the allure and the charm of this.
This film was a great pioneer of the romantic crime genre in my opinion and helped to pave the way for some later movies. Although to some this film may have lacked the modern standards for most films of this genre, keeping in mind that this film was shot in 1967 and was banned from the Quebec Film Festival because of the provocative nature of the film.
I also appreciate the way that High portrays the great liberating spirit of both men and women in the 60s. Their was a true appreciation for liberty and freedom being expressed in the film whether wrongly placed or not. This was one of this first films that I saw accurately portraying this of the time.
The movie does show a few week points in both script and acting ability and perhaps and little too much time spent upon the sex scenes which some may view as a delving into a pornographic film. But I believe that the film was meant to raise eyebrows of the time and push the limit of film.
All in all for an 'indie' film of it's time I would say that Kent did a pretty good job of this movie and the there were some spectacular shots in the film. So I'm going to give this an 8 out of 10.
