Bobby (I) (2006)

more fitting now than ever

If Emilio Estevez is not nominated for best original screenplay, consider it a crime. He should win hands down. Each backstory - and their are many - are resonant themselves. But bringing them all together with the words of Bobby Kennedy makes it that much more impactful.

As a Canadian, I didn't know much about RFK, and yet so much about JFK. (Teddy I can identify with but that's another movie - and I think it was called Animal House) It's a shame his legacy was a bit lost under the shadow of his brother. He had ideals that would have served the world well then, and more importantly now.

Estevez lets RFK quotes wrap things up in a nice warm bow. It's a tragedy that Bobby was lost as a person, but his words saved forever can only serve to inspire. At least I hope so. America and the rest of the world could do well to listen. Especially now.

Seriously - the film ended and I felt like I was staring into my empty chocolate bar wrapper and the delight was slipping away. I walked out of the theatre feeling lighter than I've felt in a long while.

It's a universal theme - who didn't have the poster of some Hollywood star or starlet on their wall growing up? Brian just saw hope in the situation and went for it - for better or for worse.

Watching his hopes rise and fall is truly an emotional roller coaster - this guy can wear his heart on his sleeve like nobody else. It's genuine giddiness and it's so fun to share in.

There were three or four spontaneous bursts of applause during the film at the screening I saw. I was not the only person loving the film. It should inspire everyone to follow their dreams. See it and tell all your friends too.

If you can get past the subject matter....

then you might love this film.

The screening I saw had more walk-outs than any film I've seen in a long time. "No sex, no violence, unspeakable filth" - seemed a fairly honest warning to me. My friends and I loved it and when the mood hits - still quote it.

The mime's version is even entertaining...but mostly because I noticed he was also wearing a microphone. George Carlin paints a great picture, Gilbert Gotfried slays with it and Bob Saget shows off the side of him that is soooo far from his Full House days.

It may be a hard sell to some of your friends - and for some good reasons - but check your political correctness at the door and sit back and laugh inappropriately. I'm sure it's good for you on some level!

See this film!!

A beautiful peek into the human condition. Velcrow Ripper does an amazing job of allowing subjects to make sweeping statements and then disproving them with a single shot.

For example - while explaining to a Palestinian border guard that he is on a mission to find hope for the future while in his country. The guard replies "you will not find hope here". Boom - cut to three children laughing and sitting on their porch. The best typo ever is seen in a shot from the Kabul Afghanistan airport. A sings prohibits you from bringing in "dangerous things like gasses and passions". They obviously mean poisons but passions can be dangerous there too.

Take the trip, you won't be disappointed.

A beautiful documentary

Lovely tale of some of the residents of Sojourn house in Santa Barbara, CA. It's an assisted living setting for handicapped adults. Watching the relationships between residents and the (extremely hot and sensitive-seeming) staff is fascinating. Each resident brings more to the tale with their own personal stories and I highly recommend you take the time to see this film.
