Used Cars (1980)
50 bucks never killed anybody
What a good movie. I was up late one night and this appeared on cable so I thought I would give a it a try. 2.30 am comes around and am still watching it laughing hard. Maybe because I had no expectations helped but I really enjoyed it as would anybody else with a sick sense of humour. Recommended to anybody who just wants to kick back and watch a silly movie with an absurd plotline that was only intended for a bit of fun. I mean, isn't that what movies are for? Enjoyable stuff I give it 8/10 only because the final sequence drags on a bit.
Signs (2002)
dreadful movie
The first sign I got watching 'Signs' was a long yawn. The second sign I got was my eyelids feeling heavy. The third sign I could not wait for was the neon one spelling exit. The director who brought us 'the sixth sense' is what is known in the music industry as a one hit wonder. Even A-Ha had one good song. 'Signs' makes 'Police Academy 6' look like an Oscar contender. The plot is.....invisible. The characters boring, (I mean I was hoping that little brat with asthma would just stop breathing and die already.) Mel Gibson must have taken so much money on his salary little else was available for special effects. Check out the alien who looks like a Winter Olympian luge athlete with the tight green bodysuit. This is one of the poorest movies I have ever seen in my life. I could not even recommend this to my worst enemy. 0/10 (I can't see where to give it 1/10. Yes, it is that bad.)
The Pledge (2001)
Nicholson shines
The Pledge is a vehicle for showing off another fine performance from Jack Nicholson. He plays a retired police officer, Jerry Black who is determined to solve one last murder case that has already been closed, doing anything it takes after promising to a victims mother he would find the killer (Hence the title). The film gets bogged down a bit in parts and is a bit slow moving. If it wasn't for the fine performance of Nicholson and the original ending I would have rated this lower. Not bad, check it out if your a fan of Jack. Otherwise wait for it on TV. 6/10
Requiem for a Dream (2000)
disturbing, yet thought provoking.
Every once in a while you see a film that sticks with you a few days after seeing it. Requiem for a Dream is one of those films. It is a truly disturbing look at drug addiction that features some incredibly good performances from all actors, especially Connelly and Burstyn. Some may find the technical aspects from the film a bit "artsy" but I enjoyed this film nevertheless. I don't know if it is the kind of film I could watch over and over but it definately warrants at least one viewing. Check it out, you will be glad that you did. 8/10
Mulholland Dr. (2001)
critically acclaimed does not mean it's good.
All the critics seemed to love this film and it is number 98 on the all time list of this website at the time of writing. So, I rented it out. This movie has no plot, absolutely nothing happens and is total rubbish. Everybody says you do not need to understand this film to like it. These are the lemmings who always agree with the 'experts' and don't dare to have their own opinion. A blind dog with one leg could have made a better film than this.
Deliberate Intent (2000)
Good Idea, Poor Execution.
After catching this flick on late night cable, I did not expect much at all. I was not mistaken. The film raises some interesting questions on free speech and the US first amendment as it follows the story of a lawyer suing a publisher, whose book is responsible for a triple murder. This is an interesting topic to look at in a film and makes you think about books, films and songs and how they can influence weak-minded individuals, and have done in the past. John Hinckley Jr. and "Taxi Driver" is one that springs to mind. However the actual delivering of this message suffers due to the plot. The director does not seem to be sure whether he wants to concentrate on the murders the court case or the main characters divorce and is the worse for it. It jumps around too much, has no character development and is decidedly flat. Good idea but could have been better.
