At the End of Eight (2019)
It's so bad
This movie is so so so bad. It's not even so bad it's good. It's not the typical intentionally corny horror movie that ends up being good. It's just plain bad. I'm not even sure how the average rating is close to 5 stars?
It is written badly. Directed badly. Acted badly.
It is written so horribly that while watching one scene in particular the thought crossed my mind that it looked like an entry for a middle school script contest. In the scene one of the intruders finds a missing person's poster sticking right out of a box. Who on earth bothers to put a missing person's poster in a basement, in a box, but conveniently leaves the bright red "Missing" headline sticking up for all to immediately see?
The plot is everywhere and nowhere. There's a twist at the end that makes no sense and is unnecessary. Where was the director in all of this? Was this person really looking at the script, plot as a whole, and acting and thought "This is great."
My god, the acting was bad from beginning to end. The woman jogging around the neighborhood in the opening scene didnt even do a good job of pretending to jog.
Behind Closed Doors (2021)
Trauma porn
The four main characters were so completely flawed that I'm almost willing to bet that whomever made this movie lost their wife to another woman. The side plot about the preacher having his own affair was seemingly thrown in to make the movie seem as though it isn't bashing women or sapphic relationships.
Woman 1: Gets herpes from her female partner, has sex with one of her students, and then commits suicide
Woman 2: Cheating on her bf with a woman she meet while in prison. Later confesses to the boyfriend while explaining she was in prison for killing an aunt that used to rape her. Bf graciously takes the gf back
Woman 3: Cheating on her husband with a woman. Gets engaged to the woman. Husband catches her and throws her out and she protests even though she already planned to leave that very same day. She later apologizes to husband and he graciously takes her back.
Woman 4: Lawyer looking to get elected as judge. Has sex with subordinate, and subsequently extorted by the woman. It is found that the lawyer kicked the subordinates sister out of a sorority because she was gay, making the lawyer a hypocrite.
Like I said, trauma porn.

It was ok
I'm an Adam Driver fan so I was expecting to love the movie. The opening scene and the scene depicting the flight was poorly done and looked liked something from a low budget film. The production value was severely lacking. I made it through the crash scene and shortly thereafter fell asleep. Im not even sure how long I was asleep for. When I finally woke up he was running around fighting off dinosaurs that were for some reason ALL trying to attack him relentlessly like they held a grudge. Odd but ok whatever. The movie was so cliche I knew that at the very last moment he would be saved. This was a B movie that somehow made it into theaters. Do yourself a favor and wait for it to stream for free.
The Woman King (2022)
Loved It!!
I am so glad that this wasn't another typical movie about the downtrodden slave. I enjoyed that they took us back to Africa to one of the villages that helped push the slave trade but is currently at an impasse as to what needs to be done. I liked the dynamic between the 2 women that were in a battle for the kings ear and for the seat by his side. There were outter and inner conflicts that drove the story from beginning to end. And I absolutely loved that they showed SISTERHOOD between brown skinned women. It is not shown enough in movies or on tv in general. Everyone did a great job and I hate that I missed my chance to see it in theaters.
First Reformed (2017)
Has great potential
It has a very slow and dragging start. I almost gave up on the movie. Then something of interest does happen and you bear witness to the downward spiral of the priest which captures your interest. You become invested in the story thinking that there will be some type of big climatic ending. Something shocking. But nope. Nothing happens at the end. There's no resolution to this tale. Maybe it's supposed to mirror the fact that there's no resolution to climate change? I doubt it. I think the makers of this film just wanted to throw in an ending that no one suspected. At least they did a good job at that I guess.
Rumor Has It... (2005)
Eewww
I rated it a six but I still cant help but to think "eewww". I pretty sure "eewww" is the only tagline or description this movie needs. Man sleeps with the grandmother, mother, and the main character. The plot tries to make drunkenness the excuss for Sarah sleeping with Beau, but eewww. Maybe two hours before the big kiss she was sure this man was her father. Sure he took her out to make her feel better about the whole ordeal and her mini midlife crisis, but to then sleep with the man, big eewww. The backstory was a good one and they really could have just made Beau her father instead of her beau.
Death at a Funeral (2010)
Meh
I haven't seen the original that many other users are referencing, so my view is totally unbiased in that regard. This is supposed to be a comedy about the mishaps that happen at a patriarchs funeral. Supposed to be a comedy. A couple scenes gave me a slight chuckle, but in all this movie is far from the laugh out loud fun I was expecting especially with several comedians being part of the cast. It is too over the top and forced for me to laugh at. The movie isnt horrible, but it could have been so much better with all the talent they enlisted for it. It's basically a take it or leave it type of movie, but only take it if you can view it for free. It wouldn't even be worth 99 cents imo. Pretty sure I'll try the original everyone is referencing tomorrow.
A Trip to Infinity (2022)
Beware
I knew this wasnt the content for me before I even watched it. I had tiptoed around this movie until for some odd reason I became brave enough to watch it last night. If you have a healthy fear/anxiety of staring up into the night sky or an unhealthy preoccupation with the fact that you will die one day and from that point will forever and always be disconnected with everything you know DO NOT WATCH THIS. I thought it was great up until a little over halfway through end the end of life and the universe was thoroughly detailed. I had to finish my night by popping some mirtazapine and watching a Richard Pryor concert until I fell asleep on the couch. But conversely, if none of the aforementioned things bother you do yourself a favor and enjoy this movie.
Im Westen nichts Neues (2022)
Good
As with most book to movie adaptations, dont watch this expecting it to be just like the book. Because the movie loosely follows the book it feels disjointed and makes the viewer feel as though pieces are missing. The pieces arent necessarily important, but they do help the story flow. Having read the book helps to fill in missing information, this is why I gave it a 7/10. The viewer should be able to completely follow along without having read the book. Other than that, they did a great job of portraying the brutality of war. It knocks any romanticized view of war out of the viewers mind by showing the frontline through the eyes of the youth.
Dýrið (2021)
Missed the mark
Off top my first two issues with this film is the trailer showing us the lamb headed child (this should have not been given away) and the story being marketed as a horror film (more along the lines of suspence or psychological thriller). At least in America this film should have hit theaters on Christmas Day or on Easter to drive home the theme a little more. My last and biggest critique is the push for artsy to the deteriment of the theme/storyline, the beginning and end are good but it feels as though the makers became lost in the middle and as a result the story doesn't connect.
The setting of this movie is beautiful. The premise of the movie is great, just needed someone to help them along.
