Great start (pilot review)
10 January 2024
A frenetic energy courses through out the show that keeps it moving well. It mocks just about every trope of cop/detective show procedurals - from the family trouble, the main character being grizzled veteran of the force called in to solve an "unsolvable" case, misdirects on who the perpetrator is etc. Jon Hamm as Marvin Flute is clearly having a blast and delivers lines with speed and somehow subtly delivers asides allowing jokes to be slotted into exposition in a quick funny way. Anything with Alan Tudyk will be worth your time. And Rachel Dratch gives a good turn as a Flute's Son. Overall a twisted and funny pilot, with a lot of potential. I'm looking forward to more!

Just Plain Fun!

It's a blast from start to finish. Larson as Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel brings a lot of emotion in a very smart subtle way. Parris does a lot with her time in the role of Monica and I hope to see more of her in the future. Vellani's Kamala Khan has a bright eyed, and most importantly, enthusiastic energy that starts off as a mild irritation to both Carol and Monica but becomes an endearing emotional catharsis by the end of the film for them both.

The action is very well framed and there are some great moments that legitimately made me say "whoa" with how clever they are. On top of this there are several laugh out loud moments. The villain doesn't get too much character development, but frankly this is The Marvels showcase and it works well enough to understand the stakes.

Overall it's just so much fun. There's a lot I didn't expect or predict which is a great thing to have this late in the MCU. Plus shout out to Goose!
