Funny and "woke"
1 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
At first I was a bit bamboozled: Is this a hard core trumpist movie or what, but soon after realized it's a quite a funny study of the current situation and exposes both sides of the american prejudice extremely well.

Could have been funnier, but overall I'm entertained. +1 for setting it in Croatia (for blatantly clear money saving purposes).

7/10.

Unbelievable MESS of a SW movie
3 January 2020
They took almost every Star Wars cliche and memorable scene from the previous movies, threw them in a pot, gave it a good stir, ate it up then vomited it out and decided to let a meth head edit this mess that was clearly written for an audience that they have zero appreciation for and only want their money.

Halfway through the movie I gave up hoping that there'd be anything good in this movie, except the visuals every now and then (hence the extra star in my rating).

An epic fail that left a rotten taste in the mouth of a moviegoer who grew up with the original three. Shameful.

Unexpected goodness
8 November 2019
I had little expectations but was really happy I watched this one.

A no-nonsense, gritty western flick with a witty undertone, great acting and old school cinematography with no shaking cameras or any other nonsensical gimmicks they throw at us constantly these days. And foremost: No idiocy or dumb gaps in the plotline, however silly it might be otherwise.

The dialogue and the story aren't great, let's be honest, but there's something REAL about this movie and there are very relatable scenes portrayed for any man watching this movie. And I do mean men audiences. Any woman who appreciates this one is a rarity and I'd marry her in a heartbeat.

A rare gem, highly recommended.

High school movie project gone wrong
1 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This was pretty much like a bad high school project: awful script, awful acting, awfully directed and even worse editing.

Save your time or watch paint dry instead.

*spoiler below*

The only reason I gave 2 stars instead of 1 was the end scene where the baddie's johnson was still clearly erect after being chopped off and that was just hilarious - and that scene pretty much summarizes the quality of this "movie".

Top notch
2 August 2006
I enjoyed this flick immensely. Not only it brought back memories from playing those great (mystery/horror)adventure games back in the day every now and then, but also the plot was enjoyable and the actors were just great (especially Jodelle Ferland, who should be an Oscar nominee for this!). Also Alice Krige's was THE choice for her role, some trekkies out there might agree :) Amongst all the dirt they call "horror" these days this is a true gem, but tilts to fantasy just a tad not to be called pure horror.

In an afterthought some sequences may not make much sense to a non-player, but in my opinion they're cleverly hidden so not to appear too lame, so to say.

Only minus for me not to rate a full 10 was that in the very end the plot got just a little too twisted, but I'd say a very strong 9 1/2-.

Darkest story of the SW-series
3 June 2005
I didn't expect too much from this, judging by the quality of it's (new) predecessors. Even though the movie had some very stupid ideas in the story (a coughing robot ... c'mon) and way too much special effects to compliment the story, I still found myself enjoying it.

It was by far the darkest of the series and not nearly as humoristic as episodes I and II. Sort of reminded me of the feeling of the old SW-movies and I think this was a good "end" for the series.

Casting was OK, nothing fancy from any of them. Too bad there weren't any new really memorable characters, but still I think it's better to have no memorable characters at all, than having the likes of Jar-Jar Binks who easily goes into my top #5 of all-time obnoxious and completely unnecessary characters in ANY movie I've seen.

All in all a decent movie worth the movie ticket.

A somewhat sad movie about common destinies - in the Finnish scale.
11 February 2005
Before I'd seen this movie I've heard a lot of praise about it and quite many exclamations about how "horrific" it was. Not to take any credit away from this movie, I think it wasn't all that horrible or even shocking. It's just a movie about people living in the darker side of the town. And a good one at portraying the point.

There's some great acting here and a well-thought of manuscript. Paavo Westerberg is a renowned writer in the Finnish movie scene and he's the best in what comes to describing the contemporary Finnish culture (albeit he's not the only one writer for this movie, but I dare say he's the main-writer anyway. Correct me if I'm wrong).

The casting is excellent, except for Jasper Pääkkönen (the pseudo-main character, who in my opinion should have stayed in the soap opera scene), and the sets, the cuts and sounds are very well done as well and give great atmosphere to this movie.

This movie is a story about loosely interconnected sad destinies that according to a famous Finnish band's very well known song (Eppu Normaali's "Tuhansien Murheellisten Laulujen Maa", which VERY roughly translated to "Paha Maa") throughout the whole Finnish society lead to a sad, dark end accompanied with booze, lonesomeness and the bad choices. And it's the side of everyday Finnish life about 80% of the population have no awareness of, unless movies like this are made.

Shyamalan's best work yet.
2 November 2004
I didn't like any of M. Night Shyamalan's previous movies - those hints of "scary" things scattered around all his previous movies or the blurry images of monsters just weren't scary and usually the end was either boring or just too predictable. But not in this one.

At until about half way through I was about to give up, since it felt like watching a Signs re-run (effects wise) but I'm happy I decided to keep watching because it turned out to be quite the opposite.

The plot was good and the acting was good as well. The film had a bit of a cheaply-made feeling to it, but if you don't let that bother and you like a thriller with a common-sense plot, you'll like this movie.

Made me smile after 1 minute of watching...
23 October 2003
...but later on I didn't smile all that much. A very good, theatrical masterpiece that really felt like a cool spring breeze after watching the latest "masterpieces" like Matrox Reloaded and Kill Bill or whatever "cool"... LOL.

A lot of praise has gone Von Trier's way in the past - this was the first movie I've seen from him and now I'm really interested in his previously over-hyped movies. Almost all the way through this was a very interesting one that kept my eyes peeled. The characters were ALIVE and the story was unpredictable, although simple. Might have been that I was so fascinated by the milieu and great acting that I was blinded by the obviousness of it all - now this is a feeling I haven't had in a long time watching a movie.

Lars Von Trier and Nicole Kidman deserve Oscars for this, but then again I think all the actors and the whole damn crew deserve them.

Brilliant.

Nothing fresh.
23 October 2003
This was entertaining but didn't have the freshness and innovativity we're used to seeing from Tarantino. The action sequences we're nice, not too over-exaggerated like on "Romeo must die" but still ... this is a pure trend movie. From the late ´90s ! Kung-fu movies have already been seen, in the ´70s AND the ´90s. A couple of years ago it was sort of refreshing to see the old ideas being warmed up again using new technology but enough is enough. And the story (although good) just doesn't carry the burden of staleness far enough to keep me EAGERLY waiting for the sequel.

A big plus for the soundtrack. And Uma of course :)

Better than I expected
22 August 2003
Once in a while the trailer makes the movie seem worse than it really is. This is one of those occasions. Definitely a refreshing movie for a change. There was one thing though throughout the movie that bothered me : does Depp's acting really have to rely on makeup like it did here and in Scissorhands?

One of the better movies I've seen in a while
31 January 2003
I've had this one sitting in my cupboard for about two years and now that I had the chance to have a couple of brews and check it out, I'm quite pleased with my decision to watch this one, and decided to comment on it because I think this movie has something in it that I haven't seen in a while ... no unnecessary effects, okayish plot, good, role-fitting actors. Basically NOTHING unnecessary, which is a common flaw in movies today. People have dissed this movie here in IMDB for various reasons, but I think that this kind of flicks have become a rarity nowadays and I think that this sort of film-making will become popular again pretty soon. It's like watching Tarantino without having the need to pay that much attention to everything that's happening in order to grasp what's going on, if you know what I mean. All in all a good movie, not legendary, but anyway one of the better ones. A 9 in my scale.

Best Clancy-based screenplay so far.
25 September 2002
"Affleck sucks." This was my feeling about his skills as an actor before his role in this movie as the young Jack Ryan. "Affleck is not the greatest actor on this planet, but he sure doesn't suck!", is my feeling right now after 5 minutes of watching the Sum of All Fears. All my best to the people that did the cast in this movie - you guys hit the jackpot.

This was by far the best film ever based on a novel/script by Tom Clancy I have seen and the people who did the cast sure receive a full 10 from me.Not only were the characters believable (considering you're familiar with Clancy's work) but they seemed to fit to their roles like a glove - all of them, and that's pretty astonishing nowadays in an American produced movie in my opinion. If you like Clancy's novels, be sure to check this one out - while Clancy might prevail in meticuloucity in his novels, this one sure gives the intense feeling you can only find in his best work.To anyone.Even your wife, I suspect :)

*The* sci-fi movie of the century.
26 October 2001
The atmosphere in this movie is so great and unique that there's no comparison. The cast, the soundtrack, the story --- it's great ! Highly recommended. I get a great feeling just by listening to the soundtrack and have to check this flick out again and again and again....
