Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997–2003)
She saved the world, a lot.
25 June 2003
Thank you Joss & everyone involved with this show. Big kudos for some *damn* smart television and wonderful characters who we loved. It was a fabulous seven years. My Tuesday nights are shot. The writing, (and non-writing--HUSH) was brilliant. I told my brother, who was wary, about how spectacular this show was. He bought season one, unseen, and on my word alone, and has bought every season since. He's hooked. Goodbye Giles, Goodbye Willow, Goodbye Xander. I'm going to miss Buffy Anne Summers, she saved the world (and prime-time television), a lot.

Luxo Jr. (1986)
wonderful
7 April 2002
I took computer animation classes in college. We were shown some of Pixar's shorts, including: Luxo, Tin toy, and Red's Dream. The range of emotion shown in these early films is amazingly wonderful.

Lasseter has produced some brilliant films and shorts that stand the test of time and can be enjoyed by children and adults alike.

The Wave (1981 TV Movie)
scary stuff
25 March 2002
I saw this movie when I was in my teens, so it might be cheesy if I saw it now. Part of some after-school special. Have not seen it since. I remember it though, vividly. I just went through "diversity training" at work. We got to do a bit of talking..."Hi, I'm Taj, and I'm not yet diverse..."

I think it was some sort of cynical effort by my company, to avoid lawsuits, but, whatever, it was manditory. There were a few things that got my attention. We saw two films, both of which were disturbing. one had a teacher who conducted an experiment in the 1960's (right after Martin Luther King's assasination). She had blue-eyed students as the alpha-group the first day, and the brown-eyed students the second day. These kids got a first-hand view of discrimination at its finest, and it changed their views radically by the end of the experiment. The second film had two friends(one black, one white) uproot from a major metro area to a small town and the film crew trailed them for a bit to see how they dealt with day-to-day transactions. The results were frightening and pathetically sad. I had to rethink some of my own ideas. I would like to think that growing up in the east-coast, in major cities, that some stereotypes would be dead and buried. But, unfortunately, I'm no longer think that is the case. I wish I could see this movie again, I haven't seen it in a long time, but I remember it. The whole mob mentality thing stuck with me.

I'm sure I would find it cheesy now, but for some reason, I keep thinking about it every once in awhile. And I wish it wasn't a true story.

Schoolhouse Rock! (1973–2009)
Brilliant!
9 February 2002
Whoever came up with Schoolhouse Rock was a genius. Part of the power of these little cartoons was that they were run like commercials between other shows on Saturday morning. You couldn't help but learn. It's been almost sixteen years, but to this day, I can still recite the preamble.

Barbarella (1968)
BwaaaaaHaaaHaaaa!!!

Wow, I rented this little stinker when I was in high school. I had a serious high-school preoccupation with Duran Duran and wanted to see the film that they had gotten their name from. My father let me rent it, (despite the fact that he is a vet.). I'm sure ms. Fonda would like to dismiss this film from memory. That won't happen. She can make "serious movies" till the cows come home (and they won't). But this one will linger on and on and on.

Party Monster (1998)
...And you thought YOU were messed up...

fascinating. You can't help but watch. This documentary focuses more on the lives and attitudes of Alig and his circle than it does on the murder of Angel. Very strange people in very strange times. James St. James has written a very good book on the subject called DISCO BLOODBATH. The most chilling comment is when Alig says he wants a lighter sentence "so he can have a VCR, because if you are on death row, you can't have one..." You would love to dismiss these characters from your mind, but you can't, they haunt you.

U-571 (2000)
Hollywood at its worst
16 December 2001
It just can't compare to Das Boot...in any way, shape or form. The history was deplorably re-written, the special effects were bad and (in a word) it was boring and presumptuous. What hammered it in? Around the same time that this turkey was released, The Perfect Storm came out. You would think that the makers of U-571 would have enough going on with a story like this to make it gripping, without having to re-write history or add in too many bland and useless plot twists and special effects. In comparison, look at what Wolfgang Petersen did with the story of some fishermen from Mass.who got lost in a storm. But then again, Wolfgang Petersen did bring us Das Boot.
