Cobra Kai: Party Time (2021)
Worst Episode So Far...
The episodes have been slipping a bit, but this was by far the worst. I get wanting to throw in a plot twist but there were like 5 plot twists; all of which were completely not set up. The worst part of it is some of them could have been decent if done right - especially the Miguel and Johnny scene. It was over before I could wrap my head around the implausibility of Johnny going on a weird binge after walking straight into an obvious ambush.
This Is Us: Super Bowl Sunday (2018)
Sneaky
We already know Jacks death is coming for so long that it was not as strong as it might have been but the episode is still amazing. Firstly, the way the Rebecca reacts is more realistic than you'd expect to see. People typically take time to process before breaking down which, in most shows, is not what you get. Just when you thought the pull on your emotion is over, the real tear jerker moments come after Jacks death. Watching the aftermath in the past and the present timelines is well done .
This Is Us: Memphis (2017)
Right In The Feels
This is one of the most emotional episodes of television I have ever seen. The build up to Williams death, with the Memphis trip, is a great way to tie you into Williams character before letting him go. The way his death scene is done is very well done and emotionally grabbing. I watched this with two other people, both of whom were crying.
The Beatles: Get Back: Part 1: Days 1-7 (2021)
Its Been 3 Hours And Im Already Annoyed With Yoko Ono
This is tough to review because I think the creators did a good job with the footage that they had. That said the first episode is a bit redundant. It shows the creative process and gives insight into the dynamic of the group, but gets pretty repetitive. Obviously any unseen footage spliced together of the most popular band in the world is going to be received as good because people want to see it, but if you just look at the production as a whole on the first episode, it seems a bit lacking. Audio and video rarely align and its often tough to tell what's really going on.
Only Murders in the Building (2021)
Very Binge Worthy
The ranking of this show probably depends on what genre you are expecting to see. If you want a thrilling crime mystery, you'll be sadly disappointed as the plot revolves around crime but that is the most lacking / unrealistic aspect of the show. The show really follows three people who are 'down and out' following some kind of loss, and end up finding each other to start a true crime podcast. The humor is more subtle than a full blown comedy but each character is great in their own way. The weird dynamic formed between the main three is definitely what keeps the show interesting. Selena Gomez is probably the weakest link but that's understandable considering the experienced cast. All in all I very much enjoyed the show.
Stillwater (2021)
Slow Burn
This is not the type of movie that is capturing your attention every two seconds. It is a slow paced movie that draws you into the characters, like them or not. It does take a few questionable twists at the end but for a situation this complicated, a fairy tale end would have been even less realistic. In the end it's a story surrounding a father and daughter both with impulsivity and judgement issues that end up finding the Moto 'life is brutal' based on their poor choices.
Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005)
The Perfect 'kids' Show
This is a great show for kids as every or at least most of the episodes have a good moral attached to them. The only reason I don't give this a 10/10 is because I have seen better shows. So while I don't think the show as a whole could do much better while working in its own constraints as a nickelodeon, animated, show, it could be better had it more freedom. Tough to review for that reason (am I rating the show in general, not in relation to its genre) but great regardless!
New Girl (2011)
Slightly Above Average Sitcom
Watch any sitcom for this many seasons and you'll get to enjoy the characters but overall it's just decent. It also goes through a weird reclamation period when jess comes back onto the show around season 5 or 6 (I forget) that is just plain not good. The saving grace that makes the show is really Nick who has so many one liners I can't count.
Game of Thrones (2011)
The Best Show I've Ever Seen
This is by far the best TV show I've ever seen. Sure the ending seems a bit rushed and could have gone in a different direction but I don't think that it detracts from the greatness of the show. From interweaved story lines, to dynamic characters, to great development, to the fearlessness of killing off main characters regularly this show really has it all. The show does a great job of pulling you in to feel for the characters while still showing their bad sides and mistakes. On top of that it is very well acted for a (relatively) generally unknown cast prior to the show.
Schitt$ Creek (2015)
I Dont Get The Hype
This show received generally great reviews but I don't really get it. As a story arch it's good and the characters are well done but most of the episodes are bland. It could just be that it is not my style of humor but I didn't find the show terribly funny. Also while the show is well acted, the characters annoyingness is played up in an attempt to be funny but I just found it a bit... annoying.
Friends from College (2017)
Very Unique
I get why so many people don't like the show because throughout the whole thing there really isn't anyone to root for. Everyone does some bad things and has their lines blurred about what is right and wrong. But for the reason it gets hate, I enjoyed the show. All other shows like this that follows groups of friends has massive stereotypes and everyone is likable in their own way. Its just the way TV is I guess but its rather unrealistic. Life is messy, confusing, and way harder to navigate than is usually portrayed, but in Friends From College it feels more authentic. Also the humor in the show is decent, not that I would consider the show a straight up comedy where I am laughing out loud but I found a lot of the show rather clever and enjoyable.
Free Guy (2021)
Better Than Expected
I expected a rather dumb movie that's only redeeming quality is Ryan Reynolds sense of humor but I was happily surprised. For someone wanting a mindless enjoyable comedy, I actually wouldn't recommend this as it seems like more of a rom-com type movie with roots in sci-fi and philosophy.
Love, Guaranteed (2020)
Poor Writing
With a decent cast and concept that seemed intriguing, I had higher hopes for this one. The acting seemed decent, it was just the writing that was poor. This movie is no better than a Hallmark movie and I'm honestly surprised it's at a 6/10. The humor was bottom of the barrel to the point where it was tacky. The lack of character development was also surprising. The one thing I expect from a rom-com is to be pulling for the main characters and to be happy at the end but I honestly didn't care.
