2000 Miles to Maine: Adventures on the Appalachian Trail (2004)
Genuine depiction of Trail life
You want to know what it is like on the AT? Watch this flick. Chad's experience on the trail moved me in ways that only someone who felt the same anxiety in the beginning could be affected. If you try to see this documentary as a "how to" guide, then you will not see the real meaning behind the "hike your own hike" attitude that besets most of the thru-hikers attempting to complete the trail each year. Videography was good considering the logistics behind keeping in touch with the gypsy backpacker Chad as he makes his way to Maine. The film's style resembles a video-blog, but the style was very effective method of communicating trail life as it happened for the benefit of the home viewer. kickatree AT'96

Enjoying the film
Perhaps it had it's share of cliché's and predictable scenes, but it was a decent adventure film. I am not sure what it takes to make an academy award winning film, but "Hildalgo" was very entertaining. I am glad I spent the time and money for it.
I particularly enjoyed Omar Sharif's effort. He has always been a favorite of mine. Viggo Mortensen' character (Frank) was a real tough hombre', but knew his place within a culture of horsemen. He himself was a "halfbreed" taking advantage of his "white" side. In the beginning of the film, Frank witnesses the aftermath of the slaughter at Wounded Knee. The film didn't let on that he was part Indian until the eve of the beginning of the race. I felt like he knew that these deaths marked the beginning of the end for "his people." That was too much for him.
The race was a race. Dodging bullets and dancing around sword-wielding bad guys, Frank was still able to persevere. I should mention Hildalgo's effort to give all that he could was the driving force that propelled this film. I often felt sorry for the horse. Hildalgo put up with allot of abuse. Falling in a pit getting stuck with a spear then recovering while stomping a leopard to death. That scene told me that the horse was one tough hombre' too!
Thank God it didn't have an old Yeller ending.
Dead Man's Walk (1996)
One whopper of an Epic
What a truly wonderful miniseries.I laughed, I cried and I even saw a British Lady riding nude through the desert. It scared the dickens out of the "savages." There was never a dull moment. From the time the series began to the end this band of Texans lost comrades but kept up the fight. How many ways can you kill a Texan? This picture shows you. Seriously; I really great epic to be enjoyed on DVD...all 270 minutes of it in one sitting.

I didn't realize I was a romantic (Personal Thoughts)
Well written and acted. It wasn't a fair ending though, I mean how the movie caught me off guard. It made a mature, grown man cry. I had pleasant thoughts the entire day! What else did this movie accomplish? It gave a charge to my soul.
