Gagga (1971)
Pretentious crap
I can't believe Eric German gave this movie 4/5 stars. Me and my friends wanted to walk out after the first half (and some people did)because it was so incredibly bad, but then we realised we had already spent our Lm2.75.
If I had made this film, I'd seriously be embarrassed to show it in theatres. Even big-time directors like Quentin Tarantino had the decency to not release their crappy, cheap, amateur, first student film (I'm referring of course to "My Best Friend's Birthday" which, despite it's crappiness, is still more entertaining than "Gagga").
I knew I was going to watch a student film, but come on! I've seen better movies made with a webcam on youtube. "Gagga", with it's pretentious on the nose symbolism and metaphors, tries to be intellectual and thought-provoking (just like the recent American "querky" indie films), but instead ends up being as watchable as Andy Warhol's "Sleep." I wouldn't be so p!ssed off if they at least had the decency to screen this for free.
Btw, am I the only one who noticed the camera crew, audio man, and the guy with the clapper board yelling "Take 4!" in one of the final scenes of the movie? Did they forget to edit that out or is that some more genius intellectual metaphor I missed?
Qerq (2007)
"Qerq" is one of those "It's so bad it's good" movies.
I feel there's isn't really much to add since all the previous reviewers pointed out everything that is wrong with this 2 and a half hour soap opera. Everything about this film is terrible. The plot is a hotch-potch of the worst elements of the worst melodramas ever made. The dialog, as other reviewers said, is just plain laughable, and it makes the daytime soap opera dialog sound pretty realistic.
As for the direction and cinematography, well, it looks terrible, and this is not merely because of the lack of financing (the film cost less than 100,000 Euros), but the director is simply horrible; every conversation scene is filmed in close-ups reminiscent of bad telenovelas. Some scenes were filmed with a dolly or steadycam, and there are even a few crane shots, so despite the low budget, they could afford these great tools. But somehow every shot (save a couple) is bland and the director is unable to really move the camera in interesting ways. There's a lot of movement, mind you, but it all seems so incredibly uninspired and uninteresting.
The action scene in the end is mind-numbingly bad. All the characters start appearing out of nowhere and they all start shooting at each other and stuff. The scene is so badly directed it's virtually impossible to understand what exactly is going on.
Anyway, check it out if you wanna have a laugh. "Qerq" is one of those "It's so bad it's good" movies.
