How did Hollywood ruin rugby with this movie?
28 May 2009
schoepeo commented that "Hollywood ruined rugby". I don't know where or when you played rugby, but 2 of my sons played high school rugby in Arizona for a coach from New Zealand that played at the collegiate level and this movie represented high school rugby at it's best! The Flagstaff team represented the local Arizona Highland High School team that was known for it's illegal tackles and attempts to cheat and play gutter rugby. The Highland team represented my sons' team which played at a high level of integrity and grit. The rugby scenes reminded me of the many games I went to and videotaped for the team. The Hakka reminded me of the joy in my sons' eyes as they participated in it prior to each game. The hits, flips, crushes, etc. reminded me of the many bloody shirts I washed weekly for the team. The coach and his integrity, work ethic, rugby drills (including running with another player on your back - my sons' coach had them run UPHILL), and sense of giving back to the community reminded me of my sons' coach. This movie TRULY represented high school rugby and if it's not what you have experienced, you've missed the best rugby has to offer!

Excellent for showing loyalty and friendship
31 March 2008
This was an action-filled movie that my boys (ages 8 and 11) loved! They related well to the two boys in the movie. The boys were believable and authentic. They especially like that there was no "lovey-dovey stuff" in it. I was a little concerned with the occasional swearing and violence. But, it wasn't the young boys that swore, so that helped. It is far better than "Stand By Me" since the boys in this movie are better role-models. Yet, this movie still shows the themes of the struggles of growing up and making choices. Also, the adults in the movie (for the most part) are not shown as stupid or oblivious people. The best part is that the theme of loyalty and friendship comes through with "flying colors"!

You have the wrong movie in mind

This family has no father. It is the mother raising the 5 children. You must be thinking of another movie. The father of these children died before the movie even starts. This is a beautiful movie that even my 11 year old son loved. He sat and laughed and laughed as he watched it. While some might see it as simplistic and unrealistic in this day and age, I was glad to see a movie that showed basic family values and was enjoyable for my children to watch. It also showed basic moral values and how they impact others. It became a series of movies and was followed up with Five Little Peppers in Trouble and Five Little peppers Out West.
