masterpiece masterpiece
This movie is unique in many ways. Amazing cinematography combined with proper CGI, delivers this masterpiece. The one-shot film camera style that never cuts is one of them. It is set at a very specific moment of WW1 and does not waste the time explaining the setting, instead, you are taken right into the story without any background of the characters, or who they are, it focuses on the horrors and drama of the war. But that's the beauty of this film. I had a blast watching it. Might be a little slow paced and boring for those who are not into these war movies. This movie is unique in many ways. De slag om de Schelde (2020)
EXTRAORDINARY WW2 NETFLIX MOVIE
Amazing Dutch film! So many times seen big Netflix budges go to waste, but this ww2 drama with a heavy military strategy focus delivers some exciting action-packed battles with amazing acting and visuals with the standards that saving private Ryan established.
The Forgotten battle is a proper title as control over the strategic island of Walcheren was critical during the allied advance in the final moments of the ww2.
What makes this movie extraordinary, is that you can see different points of view of the conflict, as there are several characters from Dutch civilians, resistance members, British Paras, and a young German SS soldier.
Operation Mincemeat (2021)
SLOW PACED ENGAGING WW2 STORY
I think the plot is brilliant, the way the story gets told, we get to know how the British pulled the historic deceptive maneuver, so they could safely land troops in Italy with minimal resistance.
Developing the characters, their arcs, and What drives them was also interesting as delving into their lives we understand how the British lived in wartimes. But there is the problem with the pacing and too many side plots going on that, even though I was hooked with the main plot, often felt bored. It has exciting moments too!
Halo (2022)
CHAPTER 7 KILLED THE SEASON FOR ME :/
What a great way to complement the HALO lore than to focus the TV series on events before everything we've seen in the video game series. They even made some small twists and changes, like cap Keyes being black and Miranda Keyes being a scientist instead of a military leader. When the TV SHOW is focusing on the master chief background, the SPARTANS & COVENANTs, the UNSC, and mainly HALO LORE, I really enjoyed and accepted most of the plot. The first chapter was ok, but after the 2nd I started to get really worried. Everything started to feel more like Star Wars and less like HALO. They gave a LOT of screen time to characters like KWAN and they tried so hard to make me care about them but failed to accomplish it as I hated every minute they wasted the show on dumb-ass character arcs. Then chapters 5 and 6 are entirely focused on Master Chief and HALO Lore, so I was really happy with that. Things started to get interesting and looked like we were getting back on track. Then, chapter 7 wasted the series' potential again. It's focused entirely on KWAN. I don't know what went wrong during the plot development, but If you are going to give us only 9 episodes, you are wasting way too much time on side stories most of the fans won't care about. I really liked Pablo S. For the Role, never imagined how an actor would play the Master Chief, and this guy feels natural for me. Hope they don't waste the remaining chapters on KWANs.
Skyfall (2012)
BRILLIANT & ACTION PACKED WITH SLOW PACE ENDING
What a great way to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the James Bond saga with Skyfall! As Quantum was focused on the Bond character coming to terms with events at Casino Royale and consolidating him, Skyfall still focuses on Bond and keeps developing the character. It's the first time we see a human 007 who is trying to come back to who he was: an efficient, cold killing instrument. But his body and mind are not responding, as he is not sharp and has lost a step.
I think the plot is brilliant, bringing modern thematics to the saga, such as hacking and information warfare. The villain has complex layers of motivation, you get to understand what drives this damaged but efficient psychopath.
Right until the attack on the committee hearing, the pacing was exciting and the execution just right. I loved the new direction and editing as they excel in everything Quantum did wrong with shaky cams and half a second cuts, cheap tricks to make the action feel authentic, but you can't tell what is going on. In Skyfall, they went all-in with long action sequences without a single camera cut, perfectly achieved. Daniel Craig is the best Bond for me, and Skyfall was his best performance, at least in the action play.
The ending just kills the movie for me. That's why I gave it an 8 instead of 10. The mansion setup is just slow and dumb, and the villain cannot accomplish so much and play such a dumbass role at the end. The goons at the end drop like flies at the hands of two old-timers who have never seen combat. If you have an attack chopper, why not level the whole place before sending the only strike team available? The mansion is a sniper paradise as there is not a single tree in miles, you can see an enemy assault coming from every direction. Even though the defenders were armed with old shotguns, the strike team goons approach the target in the open like sitting ducks, they didn't know what the defender's capabilities were, and they walk up there like amateurs. After completing so much and getting MI6 on their knees, I can't see them perform such a dumb role at the end. It just kills the experience. It is like they were trying to get us to sleep with that slow pacing.
I loved the movie, just wish they skipped the last part, so I could give it the 10 this masterpiece deserves.
Quantum of Solace (2008)
GREAT FOLLOW UP TO CASINO ROYALE
I strongly recommend checking the user "lnvicta" review of this movie as I read a lot of user reviews and that one I liked the most.
To me, Casino Royale is the best 007 movie and Daniel Craig is the best Bond ever. So naturally, I loved Quantum of Solace as it is a direct follow-up of the events in Casino Royale. The focus of this movie is Bond itself, how he comes to terms with Vesper's betrayal and her death. You can see how he is fueled by rage and this is portrayed in the impressive acting of Mr. Craig.
I remember watching this at movie theaters in 2008. Back then, I felt the movie was amazing with tons of action sequences but somewhat slow-paced and with too many shaky-cam techniques that cut every half second, so you can't tell what's going on. I think the plot and overall movie are great, the acting and the execution were great, but the problem lies within the direction and editing.
I'm watching the entire 007 libraries as I can now in 2022, and revisiting Quantum Of Solace was great! Somehow I felt the pacing is not that slow, the Camile character arc was completely revolutionary for a Bond movie, I could appreciate a lot of things that didn't catch my eye back then.
This is my second 007 favorite Movie after Casino Royale :)
The Midnight Sky (2020)
EMOTIONAL RIDE WITH SPACE EXPLORATION
I jumped into this movie without knowing much about it, hoping for a fast-paced sci-fi with space exploration. I didn't even know it was directed by Clooney.
Don't get why everybody is so mad about the fact that they don't explain what happened to the planet. Ain't that the beauty of it? Doesn't matter HOW we will destroy the planet. This story is about the explorers, the hope of finding a new home for the human race, a new chance to start over and do things differently.
The midnight sky is an emotional ride, about forgiving yourself, letting go, facing ghosts of the past, and the last chance for a dying man to do things right. All of that in the face of the extinction of the human race.
The movie is really slow, I intended to watch it while doing other stuff and could not take my attention off the screen. I cried at the end like a baby. It's a really sad movie, but It sends a clear message, At least that's how I feel about it.
Yacha (2022)
BLACK OPS CHINA COMEDY
It's a fun movie with dumb characters. I got a problem with the acting, I always keep trying to like Asian movies, but the acting seems dumb and funny all the time to me. Yaksha is no exception.
The movie tries to take itself seriously, but They got it so wrong. They go gun's blazing all the time and none of the team members get hit, they all seem to be teenagers, but they kill hundreds of armed goons. The combat dialogue is really cheap and dumb. It feels more like an action comedy than a serious spy movie that intends to be.
So... South Korea sends a prosecutor to investigate a black ops team deployed in China, and they mess around with him like he is worthless. Throw him into impossible situations just for the fun of it. It destroys the plot. The Japanese involvement and the way it's executed only keeps pulling away from something remotely real. I mean, everything you see in this movie seems disconnected from something you can grasp as real.
Close (2019)
STRONG FEMALE CHARACTER!
Love realistic ex military background, she is not some super soldier, the movie is realistic. Sometimes she gets overpowered by male fighters, and it's not like she can take down a big group. I really like the action sequences, but the movie is boring most of the time.
13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi (2016)
REALISTIC MILITARY ACTION
The movie is a blast! I don't know how actually accurate it is according to the 2012 events when the US embassy got attack. It is an engaging story that will keep you tense right to the end. The operators seem badass but also human, showing clear signs of breaking down morale as the battle wages on. It has tons of action and good story too.
In the Shadow of the Moon (2019)
ENGAGING DETECTIVE STORY
The first half of the movie is a serial killer story from a detective perspective, I think the opening was amazing, and the plot really keeps you guessing.
The other half is more focused on time travel assassination with bad science, at the end the black kid tells the main character that there is no way to change the past, establishing that logic. But then she kills some people and the future changes and events get reversed. That really makes no sense.
I gave the movie a high score because I really enjoyed watching it! It has tense moments and surprises.
Svart krabba (2022)
SLOW WITH INTENSE MOMENTS, HAD POTENTIAL FOR MORE!
I loved it! I love military action oriented Apocalypse movies, slow paced with intense action moments. Black Crab always keep you guessing who can be trusted, it's really slow but intense!
The story & plot have inconsistencies all the way. There are some execution flaws as well. I can't let go an attack chopper on the open field missing the targets twice, grandpas packing submachine guns under the table, elite spec ops units assaulting a position with ww1 tactics going up front and getting killed. There are tons of things that I found wrong in the execution.
I gave it a good score because I really enjoyed the experience, dispite its flaws. If you like this type of movies you can't miss the black crab!
SAS: Red Notice (2021)
PROPER ACTION WITH BAD SCRIPT
The Idea was great! Private Military Corporations being used by governments for securing offshore strategic targets, perpetrating war crimes in the process, strong theme. But the execution is too poor. Tries to develop characters but does not get it right, when they are not shooting the story is plain boring. Instead of making black swan look like a badass group of operators, at the intro they stage an ambush and wait for a SAS raid, and get their asses kicked by non-lethal weapons. They spray tons of lead and get not a single SAS target, they don't make them look like pros. You get your hopes up about the SAS operators going against an enemy who is properly trained & organized, but no. As soon as events start to unfold, the movie turns into a classic cat and mouse save the girl, marry the girl. Some good shooting carries you to the end of this boring script.
Shaft (2019)
MUST SEE!
Super fresh action movie. Had a lot of fun watching it. The plot is basic, but enough fun to get you invested to see how the relationship between them evolves and how they solve the case by working together.
Sentinelle (2021)
FAILS TO DELIVER
The opening got me hooked, but it fails to accomplish its goals. All the potential you see at the beginning quickly starts to fade away, they had solid concepts in the mix: a strong female protagonist, a soldier dealing with homecoming & PTSD, and the big Netflix budget. When you reach half of this poorly executed story, you can tell they wasted it all. Too bad.
Gemini Man (2019)
TECHNICAL MARVEL! DESPITE ITS FAULTS, WORTH WATCHING
I had such a blast watching this movie! The shooting, fights, it's all so well executed! The Motorcycle sequence was superb, the CGI technology display blew my mind, didn't know they could do it like that.
Could not give it a 10 even thou I loved the movie. Instead of doing a list of all its flaws, I'm just gonna talk about the one that bothered me the most: the First scene is Will Smith hitting a target in a fast moving train at an impossible distance. He could be the best DIA hitman, but that shot is impossible, and we all know it. The movie is grounded and realistic, But the superhero opening, it's just confusing. A few scenes later, the two greatest hitmen (one is a clone of the other) exchange hundreds of rounds from military weapons at 50 yards, without one hit.
That's why even thou I loved the movie, I just can't give it a solid 10.
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016)
BETTER PACED SEQUEL
Everything is improved upon in this second entry. There are more fights & shootings, and they are better executed this time. The conspiracy plot is more complex, I always enjoy a good PMC theme. The pacing is well-kept too.
Jack Reacher (2012)
ENJOYABLE CONSPIRACY STORY
Engaging drifter hero detective action movie. I haven't read the books, but seen a lot of reviews of hardcore fans that do not like Tom Cruise for Jack Reacher for several reasons. I think that is a failure of the main objective. However, for me, it was an interesting conspiracy story with intense action and a satisfying ending. At times the dialogue is too dumb, and when the pacing drops sometimes is boring. But at the end I enjoyed watching it.
One Shot (2021)
EXPERIENCE A MILITARY SHOOTER
I don't remember another movie getting me so hooked from opening right till the end. Everything is a blast! The shooting, the way events unfold, the acting is superb. Since the movie is presented with a camera that never cuts, you experience everything that is happening like you were there, it's amazing!
Outside the Wire (2021)
MILITARY SCI-FI ACTION
Loved the plot and the way it's executed! Amazing special effects, the shooting is exciting. When the pacing slows, you start to lose interest, but the action is so frequent and the events get you involved. I love this kind of action sci-fi movies and this one is fantastic!
Army of the Dead (2021)
ZOMBIE KILLING FUN
The shooting and the effects are amazing! The plot and the setting make no sense like the characters, few have ex military backgrounds, the rest are teens and meat for the zombies. Sometimes the pacing will slow down and becomes boring, but then again the action sequenses are a blast to watch and got me invested at least to see how it ends.
RED (2010)
BLACK OPS ACTION COMEDY MASTERPIECE
I had such a blast time watching this Movie! Makes me remember when I was a kid on weekends we used to watch with my old man fun action movies like true lies, we must have watched a lot of times that one, he always loved the shooting and the explosions without the violence, the goofy romance between characters that sprung within the shooting sequences, it's all there. RED is a proper classic, is so fun to watch is those movies that you can watch every now and then and still laugh and get fun. What I don't get is the users that criticise RED for its lack of realism, It's what is all about, crazy shooting that make no sense, if you want a serious movie with beleivable shootings RED is not for you.
Red Notice (2021)
GREAT ACTION & FUN, BUT GOES TOO FAR
Loved the characters! The dynamics between them are fun and engaging, the plot has some twists and turns that keep it fresh, the fights, the shooting is all well executed and fun. The pacing is well done, gets you invested in what's going on. It's not perfect, sometimes seems like a movie for kids, and they could have dropped a few fantasy action sequences that made the movie a little too much. There are far too many convenient events in the film, it's all explained at the end but still, I felt they went too far with those.
Den of Thieves (2018)
MUSCLES & GUNS
The action is a blast to watch! Some firefights do not make sense, ex military guys gunning down cops for no reason. They plan it all like pros but go gun's blazing every time. Gerald playing the out of control cop is good but in the movie is like he is untouchable, there are no consequences for the crazy things he does over and over. Even so, there are some things that the movie does right like making me feel tension over some moments, but there are some problems with the plot and the characters.
