Âya to majo (2020)
Enjoyable Film!
This film has some classic ghibli themes. One of my favorites is the main heroine who perseveres and adapts to whatever life throws her way! While her intent to manipulate could be seen as problematic, I enjoyed it! She got her way by noticing people's traits and charming them. She also serves other people, but if you look at it through the lense of manipulation it taints her genuine nature. Another ghibli vibe is that the story doesn't have to be extreme, it is about the characters learning. I thought the animation was rough to watch at first, but it grew on me. It is clear they put lots of effort in. I wonder if it would get better reviews if it wasn't computer animated. My daughter enjoyed it and it doesn't have many themes I would be skeptical to show her. (Accept the physical abuse sprinkled throughout)
Bob's Burgers (2011)
Grew up well
I have been watching since season 3 was first coming out. I remember enjoying each episode. But now that I am older with a husband and child the shows more recent seasons touch me profoundly. This show has an extremely healthy family dynamic with fun adventures in each episode. I also love all the unique songs. After rewatching the original seasons they just feel like they were trying to copy other racy adult animated comedies of the time, but the newer seasons feel in a league of their own. I love this show. The lessons, music, and creativity mixed with witty writing make it a memorable watch.
How Do You Know (2010)
Strange but Fun
Glad I went in completely blind. This was a fun watch. Rather than the perfect loves we so often see in film, this one shows the imperfections. Loved the unique female lead character. She isn't the stereotypical leading lady, she is a gritty athlete going through a huge life change. In fact, all of the characters were unique yet felt real. Had plenty of moments where I laughed out loud. All performers did excellent as well. This is a movie I will rewatch for sure.
Ryû to sobakasu no hime (2021)
Deeply Touching
While the plot has many predictable aspects, it was such an enjoyable watch. It's touching on the topic of loss was incredibly felt, and as someone who has known grief, it hit hard. The depiction of online life was very realistic and engaging. Left the theater with much to discuss and many tears shed. The animation was also spectacular. English dub was well done.
Crooked House (2017)
Not the Book but Fun Watch
I am fresh off reading the book and decided to give this a film a try. While usually the glaring differences would anger me, I found the movie a fun watch. They changed so much from the start that it became easy to disassociate from the book. You will not find this movie to be close to the book at all, but the acting is all well done, the cinematography is beautiful, and the story has a decent flow.
