Synchronicity (2015)
Surprisingly Disappointing and Bad
I love Sci-fi. I am OK with bad acting and even bad dialog if it's a cool story. This movie drops the ball entirely with the story. It's shockingly unimaginative. It all boils down to one idea -- the idea of time travel/universe jumping -- which has been done and done before. The story is boring, predictable, and creates an absurdity out of human nature and behavior.
It got so boring that I ended up skipping through the last 20 minutes of the film to discover that it ends exactly as one would assume.
Don't waste your time with this film. You could probably come up with a better story right now if you gave it a try.
The Croods (2013)
Simple, funny, and sweet -- not 'clever' or 'artistic', but so what?
Yes, the story is very simple. Many of the jokes are simple. So what!? I loved the characters. I loved the simple fun humour. I loved the funny and cute creatures. This movie does a perfect job at it's goal: being a fun and sweet movie for all ages to enjoy.
Some more specifics:
Humour style: ridiculous situations, stupid behavior, cheesy and easy to relate to human interactions.
Creatures! Very imaginative at times and quite cute and funny.
Most people will like this movie.
If you are the kind of person who really enjoyed Citizen Kane, then you may not like this movie.
Zeitgeist (2007)
Hypocritical bull$hit
This "documentary" plays ominous music and displays emotional photos in contrast with completely out of context, misleading, or fabricated "facts". This movie is a huge waste of time and it's maker deserves a punch in the face.
As an economics student, it became apparent to me from the very begging that Zeitgeist is a big pile of $hit with extra $hit sauce on top. As the film continues more and more retarded accusations based on nonsensical logic are propagated. Even without factual evidence, when once considers the implications of this film, it should be clear that it is bull$hit; there is no grand government-bank conspiracy((wtf would its purpose be anyway?) that every country in the world adheres to and institutions exist to accomplish a specifics purposes not to brain wash the entire planets population. this movie sucks a$s.
No Country for Old Men (2007)
A very refreshing change of pace form classical Hollywood style
This film has just about everything; gore, action, love, hate, philosophy, huge suspense, good acting, good dialog, great cinematography... the only thing it lacks is a nice hardcore sex scene(i'm old fashioned in that way)
In an attempt to rebut the nonsense of those people who gave this movie 1 star, i will explain in the simplest possible terms why i disagree with their complaints.
To begin, i have read lots of criticism of the dialog being unbelievable, not relating to the story, and being pointless. They are correct in the sense that the dialog does not relay plot points, but for good reason; For example if the character of Moss has done so the result would have been something like this: "I'll hitchhike, that way it will be harder to follow me.", Or "ill look at my watch for a few minutes before approaching, that way i can judge of he is dead or not"... The basic point being, this is one of those rare films that relies on the idea of the viewer retaining some form of intelligence; A bit risky with todays audience but in opinion a worthy gamble.
The same can be said, to a certain extent, concerning character development; The viewer is required to judge the characters based on their actions as well as their sometimes complex dialog. Sorry, but the reason no characters say things like "I love you, you cant die, you are everything to me" is the reason this film is great.
I could go on but i think you get the point. In summary, if you are the kind of person that laughs because everyone else is laughing, not because you get the joke, you wont like this movie. In which case i suggest that you turn on your brain. You should feel privileged to have seen a movie that was "confusing" as apposed to being thankful for a pile of garbage dumped in your lap(aka 300)
Citizen Kane (1941)
Ultimately disappointing
Citizen Kane is one of the most overrated movies of all time. I admit my skepticism is biased but i have good cause; To begin i would point out that this movies is utterly boring and since the point of a movie is to entertain this movie fails. Don't get me wrong, i enjoy some pretty "boring" films such as Stalker, but this movie truly offers me nothing entertaining. Although Citizen Kane is meant to be an insightful look into a mans life, it really isn't. All dialog is witty and sharp in a way completely lacks any human emotion. The way in which Kane's life is examined is done so in such a disconnected way that no sense of meaning can be taken from it. All in all it is a very vague, long, and boring movie presented in a way that reminds me of old time radio broadcasting where a blunt story is relayed through a series of even more blunt sound effects only in this instance blunt images are used.
Why is it rated so good then? The true reason is that Citizen Kane was a stepping stone in cinematography and special effects. Considering this aspect i can understand why it may have been revolutionary at the time; But in the modern day, it seems like nothing special.
Stalker (1979)
A work of art; truly captures part of human nature
This is a very odd film in the sense that very little happens yet simultaneously almost too much happens to keep track of; The plot is fairly simple, a group of people move from point A to point B then back to point A again. However throughout this long journey(almost three hours i think) reality, purpose, existence, desires, and fears are discussed in an oddly matter of fact casual manner. This combined with the sci-fi twist of "The Zone" makes for a truly bazaar but fascinating film.
For me the film taking place in "The Zone" truly made the movie. The Zone is shrouded in mystery; there is no explanation to what it is, where it came from, or what the dangers of it are. Yet this eerie setting is the ideal place to examine something even eerier and more mysterious: people.
There is little or no character development but yet by the end of the film you truly feel as if these characters have shown you a part of their souls.
There were two things i disliked about this film: the beginning and the end. The beginning because there is a very long scene where the camera never moves, there is no dialog, and very little action. It is just not a good way to pull a viewer into a film. I also disliked the very end where the little girl is moving objects with her mind; It does not seemingly relate to anything else that has happened in the film and greatly contrasts the rest of the film in the sense that there is little apparent meaning.
If it sounds interesting from what you have read here, then watch it; i recommend it as a good movie to watch while getting better from a hangover.
Survive Style 5+ (2004)
A refreshing change of pace from the classical Hollywood style
I am not usually a big fan of experimental films but this movie is now one of my all time favorites. This movies has everything; action, comedy, horror, romance, philosophy... you name it. With 5 original and different stories to follow, even if you don't like one aspect of this film, another is sure to catch your fancy.
Being a Japanese film this movie has the trademark Japanese type humor, so if you are into random comedy, you should enjoy this film. Even if thats not your style of humor I recommend you check out this movie just as a refreshing change from the typical Hollywood style
Most important though, just have fun with this film; I have read reviews that try to analyze and put meaning to the different events of this film. Why do some people always need to find a moral to every story? I suppose there are ideas to be taken away from this movie, but don't try and analyze it too much, just enjoy it.
Tom yum goong (2005)
If the point of a movie is to entertain, this movie has achieved near perfection
If you are looking for a meaningful insightful film, this is not the movie for you. If you want a movie that delivers what the audience wants, and is great to cheer along with, this is the movie for you.
The acting is certainly sub-par, the plot is not sophisticated or intelligent(although it is funny), but this film is likely the most fun you will have had with a movie in a while.
Furthermore, Tom Yumg Goong delivers some of the most amazing action scenes you will ever see. Tony Jaa is a true master of martial arts cinema; he performs entertaining and amazing feats without using wires or cheap camera tricks. There is a 5-10min fighting scene in which Jaa works his way up a giant spiraling building defeating many "bad guys" and performing entertaining stunts in which the camera does not cut once! Furthermore, it is very apparent that much of the time the blows dealt are full contact(ouch)!
see this movie, its just good plain fun.
300 (2006)
bad plot, bad action, horrible dialog, and offensive historical portrayals
I would spoil the plot but there really isn't one, some half naked men with the aid of cheap camera tricks defeat an army of "Persians", thats really all there is to it. Dialog is melodramatic, acting is nonexistent and relies, like the action scenes, on lots of cheap camera tricks.
Worste of all is the fact that this movie could easily be viewed as conservative propaganda. the idea of "Freedom" is seared into the flesh of this movie and is constantly mentioned in dialog. furthermore the Persians, which were really one of the most advanced ancient civilizations ever, are portrayed as ignorant barbarians that are inferior, evil, and apparently enslaved(all of which relate in no way to the Persian empire).
The best reason i have heard for someone liking this film is that they liked seeing all the "ripped" guys.
