Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Those Old Scientists (2023)
It had no right being this good!
This had the makings of tragedy or triumph, and it was an undisputed triumph. I've been a Star Trek fan for 30 years, and this will go down as one of my favourite episodes. It was very trek, funny and at time heartfelt. A real love letter to Star Trek in all its form. I know some will hate it on principle, but that's just not giving it credit. To be able to combine a cartoon and a live action show like this was incredibly clever, kudos to the writers, and well done for planning ahead with the casting of the voice actors from lower decks allowing them to be able to transition into the real world. I'll watch this one again and again. Strange new worlds is consistently knocking it out of the park.
Star Trek: Picard: Võx (2023)
It gets better and better
This is not just the best episode of Picard so far, this is the best episode of Star Trek in a very long time. Don't get me wrong, I've enjoyed some of the new incarnations like Lower Decks, and Strange New Worlds has been good so far. But this, this is Star Trek of old, honourable people fighting the good fight. Yes, there is a lot of fan service - but why shouldn't there be?! This is the Starfleet we all know and grew up with, it should have a familiarity to it and returning characters (a certain Admiral in this episode being the perfect example). Bringing back the D might be pushing it, but I really don't care, and it would be a lie to say that as a 41 year old man I didn't tear up a little to see them back on that bridge. There was just enough explanation to let me suspend my disbelief!
Having the Borg back as an enemy is also satisfying. I was a teenager when episodes like 'The Best of Both Worlds' came out, and I remember the battle of Wolf 369 and sheer loss being incredibly memorable and unexpected. It's showed that our heroes couldn't always save the day. First Contact was also the best of the TNG movies by far. The Borg are the perfect malevolent threat, and this new form of attack takes it in a new direction.
Anyway, I'm rambling out of pure enjoyment. I'm so excited for the final episode, but also I don't want it to end! Paramount had better have something similar to this season in the works with Janeway and the voyager crew!!!
Star Trek: Picard: Imposters (2023)
This is what Star Trek was
I'll admit it, I kind of worked my way through Seasons 1 and 2 out of a sense of duty having been a huge TNG fan back in my youth. Now we have a completely different show where I actually find myself excited about each episode being released - it's a good feeling to get back to! There's a solid plot that is properly imbedded in the Star Trek universe that has come before, interesting new characters, plenty of action and just the right dose of nostalgia. This episode was no exception, and it was good to see Ro again, despite the outcome. Excited to see what they have coming for the rest of the season.
