The Wizard of Oz (1939)
chittenango, ny
This movie is a classic, I am surprised to read some of these comments. Apparently, some people forget how old it is? In the 50's, we could not wait to see this movie, especially once a year on TV. But, seeing it on the screen was awesome. Last week, we took our nephew to see it, and I was amazed at how many people never saw it on a big screen. Guess we were lucky, it only cost 5 cents. Anyway, I have not read all the comments, and most are from out of the country, but if anyone travels thru Chittenango, NY---it was the home of L Frank Baum. His grandson still lives there, and every year, they put on a spectacle. The first time we drove thru, I was amazed, to see all the streets, yes, paved with yellow bricks. The businesses? They all had names like; Dorothy's place, or Oz gift store (I don't actually remember what they are, even thought I'm 45 minutes away.) But again, if you are going thru upstate NY, central NY---it's really pretty, especially this time of year, in the fall. Speaking of falls, they also have a pretty waterfall. My husband and I still watch this movie on TV! And tho the movie was released in August, it has my birthday in June, when the book came out, so it's special to me. Now, if only more movies were like this. Better yet, life! (one of the munchkins looks like a cousin of mine.) 1939 was a great year for movies.
Dirty Dancing (1987)
music
I think, like many others on here, that the music was exceptional. Last week, one of the channels had a "dirty dancing marathon." Good thing the husband wasn't home, because I watched it all day. I kept wondering why, I love it so much. When he came home, he said that it's the music I like---he's right. And, maybe the fact that we live a 1/2 hour northwest of the Catskills? They did a good job with the movie, to look like Upstate NY. (We don't get that much sun tho.) And I think I noticed Pilot Mountain, NC in the movie? Or near there? Beautiful areas. Just like here. I never tire of watching this movie, tho some on here thought it was awful. Too bad. One thing I really love, is a particular song; "in the still of the night." Growing up in the 50's, my brother and I always had to listen to a neighbor's brother, rehearsing a song-- and they wanted to know, if we liked it. Yep--it was that song! So it was so good to hear it played in a movie! I have to get the soundtrack, and the movie! I agree, about the clothes. Especially that blouse Baby had on, after they go to the Sheldrake. I remember those coming out in the very late 60's. And when her father says; "when I say I'm wrong..." well, he didn't really apologize IMO. Just said he was wrong, but not to him? It should have been; "I'm sorry Johnny." The sister and waiter play good roles too. They all played good parts. "22 countries in 3 days." I've been to Europe 8 times, and to me, that's too much! Every time we drive on Route 17 thru the Catskills, and see the billboards, I laugh thinking about Dirty Dancing. Good bagels too, lol.
Braveheart (1995)
''history''
I can't believe all the people giving this movie bad reviews. There is so much garbage that is made today. It is sickening. Okay, so maybe some scenes are not so accurate? Fighting on a bridge? Was this NEAR a bridge? Or, they didn't have kilts then? Who cares. Who really knows?? Even historians the so-called experts don't know all of it! Where is that cave Bruce hid in? That Spider story (which wasn't true?) Edward dying at the border? All the Robert Bruces. Well, along with not fighting on a bridge. Geez. The Bruce family is relation to me, and we don't seem to have all of them? The music was beautiful, even my son bought me the CD! Actually, I thought I commented on here IMDb but, when u wouldn't let me vote, and I had to check some things on the site, Braveheart never showed up. I have just done some extensive reasearch on Robert the Bruce. It's amazing, how the movie showed things that RTB went through, especially his brother getting drawn and quartered, and how most of his family suffered. (yeah brits, I know who he was really loyal to). Gibson, or whomever, did a good job at casting. This is a movie I could watch constantly. David O'Hara, a Scot, playing an Irishman. He's so talented and funny! May we have more of them in the future, instead of all the trash out there. Personally, I'd rather see movies pertaining to history ONLY! AND again IMDb, why couldn't I vote on here, when I'm logged in? I have to go watch Braveheart now, lol. And may people not be so critical! I love your website! ty
Norma Rae (1979)
picket line
I rate this a 20. I had to cross a picket line, just to see this film! I too own it, and watch it all the time. She deserved 20 Oscars. I was very active in union work/womens' rights, etc---to this day, I am still called Norma Rae. My favorite parts--- "how come everybody down here has 3 names"? (I still use that expression) "ohm dieting." Too funny also, how she wants that machine in the ladies' room--"do it and i'll shut up!" When Liebman tells her he has the kind of name he has to spell for head waiters! rofl... so do I........ just the way Field says stuff! Cracks me up. Still one of my favorite movies, and Field is my favorite actress. Yes, it was based on a true story. I once told a boss of mine, that I too was having a union meeting, and he could come and look in the windows! Never offered him lemonade tho! My favorite part of that movie, was when she wrote that ''union'' sign and held it up! Got shivers down my spine.......
Kingdom of Heaven (2005)
experts
I had to stop reading a majority of comments, since everyone knows so much about the time period! First of all, it is great to finally have a movie, about something historical, and not about the usual tripe that Hollywood puts out these days. Your comments disgusted me. I commend all of them for this movie. Some of these posts were so long, it was like getting a bad grade from a pompous teacher. My interest in this movie, was because of my genealogy. How many on here, can trace their families back to this time period? Or to some of these people in the movie? So,until you know about that information, be kinder, and thank God a movie like this came out because soon, none of us will know who we are. Being an historical piece of work that far back--- of course there are going to be discrepancies. ----- from a crusader's ggggxxxxxx granddaughter.
Andersonville (1996)
Andersonville
I have a 2nd cousin buried there. He only lasted there 3 months. I am trying to find out more info on him, but it seems the family just isn't interested. I took pictures when we were there, but they never came out! One night, on a genealogy chat, there was a man who had an Andersonville user name, so I asked him questions about it-he happened to work there, and was also a re-enactor. I asked him, if he would take pictures for me. He sent me 6 gorgeous pictures of my cousin's grave, of the whole cemetery, the dead house, and the 6 buried off to the side. He also sent my son a book. I never knew, that someone had a baby there. If we ever go back, and I hope we do, we will get a personal tour! We visited Andersonville yrs ago--what a humbling place! I cannot even describe how we felt. But we found his marker. I would have never known about the place, if my brother didn't tell me about it. Ironically, we were 2 weeks away from adopting a former foster child- He enjoyed re-enacting after he came to live with us. When we showed him the movie, and Cliff De Young tells one of the soldiers to be quiet, because of the tunnel? He shouted out; TOBIAS! Our son turned around, and told me how much he loved that name, and when he was adopted, he not only changed his last name, but also his first name! It was fine to me, because my great great great grandmother's maiden name was Tobias.
The Last of the Mohicans (1992)
''goof,'' to me
Loved the movie. But hasn't anyone else noticed--New Yorkers that is,,,that there are no mountain laurels up here? At least I think that is what they were. The pines? Sorry, but we don't have half of that flora portrayed in that movie. Those mountains, even I noticed, that it was probably filmed in North Carolina, which looks so much like New York State. I think it was the laurels that got me the most, and the mountains. While it's beautiful up here, we just don't have that scenery. I guess that's just a central NYer making her comments. Originally, I thought it was because the weather is so cloudy and rainy here. NOT because of how the so-called Adirondacks look. Mann, you should see my back yard! They just aren't the same. What was more original, the movie "Dirty Dancing" being filmed in that same part of North Carolina. Now that really looked like the Catskills.
King Arthur (2004)
goofs
I just love your site...goofs? I don't think a master gardener would have known about that tree, which was beautiful! I found the movie enchanting, and I would and could watch it over and over again. The movie was a lot more historical, than most King Arthur movies. The word "Arth" means bear. Back then, many tribes had bears depicted on their banners, as a sign of strength. This could be where Arth came from, although there was a Roman soldier by that name who stayed in Britain. Merlin is also a real character, as is the leader of the Saxon tribe and his son. You forgot the five brothers... The hawk, that was a good one! I cannot tell you how many times, we watch movies and hear bird calls for American birds, and they are filming somewhere in Europe. You can thank Cornell University, for supplying most of the sounds for that! Woads----they should have called them Picts..same thing, but sounds better. Where do you think the word picture comes from? The people on drugs (woad) who painted their faces, like on Braveheart. The thing I disliked the most, was the nightgowns Guinevere always seemed to wear. I was cold just watching her. Snow on trees with leaves?????? You have never been to my part of the country apparently, where it happens all the time. I never picked up on any of those "goofs" u mention. LOL a sex scene?? Do you really think most people would be noticing, if Arthur had a cut on his neck? Wow, I was sure concentrating on something else!!! Riding back, or on the other side? Isn't that called reverse? Her dress being down -or up on one side? That was just too funny-happens to me all the time. The director did a fantastic job of it all. I commend him very much....and all of the actors were good! And the music-awesome.....
