Love and Action in Chicago (1999)
Dumbest movie ever
There's so much wrong with this movie, no matter where you begin to criticize, you feel like you're implicitly justifying the rest of the travesties just by not mentioning them first. With the exception of one scene very early on (with a "pregnant" Regina King), there is nothing funny about this movie. Courtney Vance isn't funny, although you get the feeling that the talented King would be, if she weren't beaten to a bloody pulp by the cardboard plot and the ridiculous hackneyed writing. The action sequences are grade C. But most of all, none of it makes sense. The decisions of the characters are unsupported by logic, and their"development" occurs within single scenes. Her acceptance of his career takes an entire 10 seconds, and his celibacy remains a completely unresolved issue. For "the best eliminator" in the federal government, he is constantly reacting 10 seconds late if at all. The boss (Jason Alexander) mistakenly gives a civilian an assignment to kill someone after having met her once, based on a misunderstood conversation? Come on. Just awful all around.
True Crime (1999)
Are you kidding me?
One of the worst movies I have ever seen. As a straight formula movie, it adds nothing to the world of crime films. Not a new wrinkle, interesting subplot, or a single bit of intrigue. But for the relatively nuanced performance of Isaiah Washington, the acting was bland and impotent. Clint was asleep at the wheel playing even more of a cliché than normal. Was James Woods the publisher? His faux-anger/wink-wink attitude toward Eastwood's conduct ("Really, how was she?") is offensive more from an artistic perspective than anything else. Like a publisher, or at least a higher-up in a modern-day major metro newspaper would ever act like that. And, as the Metro Editor, Leary did nothing but sit at his desk and stare balefully at Eastwood. He didn't do a single thing as an editor - not one! He didn't make a call, review an article, (maybe have him edit something -- there's an idea), assign a story, nothing. The awful thing about this movie was that they wren't even interested in faking it with any degree of ambition at all.
I could go on and on, but it's not worth it. This thing sucked. Period.
