Fargo: S3E6 "The Lord of No Mercy" Review - King Cadmium
31 March 2022
Gloria and Winnie get closer to the truth, Emmit tries to make things right, Nikki and Ray prepare for payback, and Varga cleans up a mess.

What I Liked:

The cinematography is solid, and each scene perfectly implements its well-crafted and memorable music score. On top of that, each actor gives a strong performance.

V. M. Varga is a terrific character, played wonderfully by David Thewlis, stealing every scene he appears. I can't wait to see how his plans unfold.

What I Disliked:

Ray's death was pretty contrived and implausible. While shocking, there must have been a more organic way of having him die.

Overall:

Fargo delivers yet another high-quality episode in a so-far solid season. One can only surmise this season will continue to improve.

Nikki and Ray's retaliation has consequences for Emmit. Meanwhile, Gloria and Winnie start connecting the dots.

Moe Dammick seems more like a foil for Gloria than an actual character. Why is he trying so hard to impede and undermine her investigation?

Overall:

Fargo delivers another high-quality episode in a mostly solid season to this point. One can only surmise this season will continue to improve.

Emmit and Sy try to figure out what they've gotten themselves into, Nikki and Ray track down some collateral, and Gloria learns more about Maurice.

Yuri and Meemo are massively underutilized, given they appear to be interesting characters. I very much hope these two characters are given more screentime moving forward.

Overall:

Fargo is back on track with a high-quality episode. One can only surmise this season will continue to improve moving forward.

Fargo: The Law of Non-Contradiction (2017)
Season 3, Episode 3

Fargo: S3E3 "The Law of Non-Contradiction" Review - King Cadmium
29 March 2022
Gloria revisits her stepfather's past to try and find some answers.

What I Liked:

The cinematography is solid, and each scene perfectly implements its well-crafted and memorable music score. On top of that, each actor gives a strong performance.

The use of animation in this episode was intriguing and unique for a show like Fargo. It is a testament to the level of creativity of the writing staff.

What I Disliked:

Ennis Stussy appears to be around 25 in 1975, yet he was 82 in 2010. An oversight by the writers.

As a whole, this episode feels somewhat pointless, with no plot advancement until the final scene. A show like Fargo can't afford to divert from its main story like this, especially for an entire episode.

Overall:

Easily my least favourite episode of Fargo so far, a merely decent outing for a show capable of much more. One can only surmise this season will improve moving forward.

Fargo: S3E2 "The Principal of Restricted Choice" Review - King Cadmium
28 March 2022
Gloria deals with the aftermath of a crime, Vargas makes a move, and Ray and Nikki move on to Plan B.

What I Liked:

The cinematography is solid, and each scene perfectly implements its well-crafted and memorable music score. On top of that, each actor gives a strong performance.

V. M. Varga is an intriguing character, stealing every scene he's in, and I will be fascinated to see what unfolds with him this season.

What I Disliked:

Nikki and Ray's storyline is noticeably less enjoyable than anything else this season. While no fault of the actors, the material they have to work with isn't very interesting.

Overall:

Fargo delivers a high-quality second episode, an improvement from the premiere. One can only surmise this season will continue to improve moving forward.

Fargo: The Law of Vacant Places (2017)

Fargo: S3E1 "The Law of Vacant Places" Review - King Cadmium
28 March 2022
A twisted sibling rivalry leads to murder, mobsters and a cutthroat competitive bridge in a small Midwestern town.

What I Liked:

The cinematography is solid, and each scene perfectly implements its well-crafted and memorable music score. On top of that, each actor gives a strong performance.

V. M. Varga is an intriguing character, perhaps the most memorable despite only one scene, and I will be fascinated to see what unfolds with him this season.

What I Disliked:

This episode was noticeably slow for a premiere, causing several uninteresting portions, especially the scenes involving Gloria and her son.

Ennis' death was poorly done and confusing, with no clear explanation as to how he died, in what was an odd death for an unremarkable character.

Overall:

Though underwhelming, this is a pretty good premiere. One can only surmise this season will improve moving forward.

Game of Thrones: Mhysa (2013)

Game of Thrones: S3E10 "Mhysa" Review - King Cadmium
25 March 2022
Joffrey challenges Tywin. Bran tells a ghost story. In Dragonstone, mercy comes from strange quarters. Daenerys waits to see if she is a conqueror or a liberator.

What I Liked:

As usual, it's impossible not to be impressed by the high-quality production value. Again, acting all around is solid.

While there are many characters and arcs to establish, it's remarkable how this show balances them all, with no scene or storyline feeling dragged out or unnecessary.

What I Disliked:

Theon's torture scenes are superfluous and dragged out. While not poorly written, they would benefit tremendously by being shortened.

The cliffhanger to end this season is underwhelming, especially compared to previous finales. It played out quite predictably, with no new revelation.

Overall:

While not on par with previous finales, this is still a great conclusion to a fantastic season. You would be hard-pressed to find a show more tautly written and produced.

24 March 2022
Robb presents himself to Walder Frey, and Edmure meets his bride. Jon faces his harshest test yet. Bran discovers a new gift. Daario and Jorah debate how to take Yunkai. House Frey joins with House Tully.

What I Liked:

As usual, it's impossible not to be impressed by the high-quality production value. Again, acting all around is solid.

While there are many characters and arcs to establish, it's remarkable how this show balances them all, with no scene or storyline feeling dragged out or unnecessary.

Robb and Catelyn Stark's deaths are the most shocking this show has produced, even more than Ned's. Game of Thrones continues to outdo itself with these jaw-dropping cliffhangers.

What I Disliked:

Nothing.

Overall:

Game of Thrones delivers perhaps its best episode, leaving an undeniable impact on the series with this unbelievably constructed penultimate episode. You would be hard-pressed to find a show more tautly written and produced.

Game of Thrones: S3E8 "Second Sons" Review - King Cadmium
23 March 2022
The Kings Landing hosts a wedding, and Tyrion and Sansa spend the night together. Daenerys meets the Titans. Davos demands proof from Melisandre. Sam and Gilly meet an older gentleman.

What I Liked:

It is impossible not to be impressed by the high-quality production value. Again, acting all around is solid.

While there are many characters and arcs to establish, it is remarkable how this show balances them all, with no scene or storyline feeling dragged out or unnecessary.

Everything involving Tyrion and Sansa's wedding had a perfect combination of humour and awkwardness. I particularly enjoyed watching Tyrion threaten Joffrey and his reaction to this.

What I Disliked:

Cersei's threat toward Margaery was too overt, even by Cersei's standards. While not out of character, it lacked any subtlety and felt forced.

Overall:

Game of Thrones is back on track with a fantastic episode. You would be hard-pressed to find a show more tautly written and produced.

Game of Thrones: S3E7 "The Bear and the Maiden Fair" Review - King Cadmium
23 March 2022
Daenerys exchanges gifts with a slave lord outside of Yunkai. As Sansa frets about her prospects, Shae chafes at Tyrion's new situation. Tywin counsels the king, and Melisandre reveals a secret to Gendry. Brienne faces a formidable foe in Harrenhal.

What I Liked:

As usual, it's impossible not to be impressed by the high-quality production value. Again, acting all around is solid.

While there are many characters and arcs to establish, it is remarkable how this show balances them all, with almost no scene or storyline feeling dragged out or unnecessary.

What I Disliked:

Each scene involving Jon, Ygritte, and Orell interacting is like watching a soap opera. It's one thing to force conflict, but the love triangle is unnecessary and poorly integrated into a show like this.

Theon's torture scenes are starting to become superfluous and dragged out. While not poorly written, they would benefit tremendously by being shortened.

Overall:

While still a good episode, this is one of the most flawed instalments in this fantastic show. However, one cannot deny that this has been a high-quality season so far.

22 March 2022
The Hound is judged by the gods. Jaime is judged by men. Jon proves himself. Robb is betrayed. Tyrion learns the cost of weddings.

What I Liked:

As usual, it's impossible not to be impressed by the high-quality production value. Again, acting all around is solid.

While there are many characters and arcs to establish, it's remarkable how this show balances them all, with no scene or storyline feeling dragged out or unnecessary.

Jamie's scene with Brienne in the hot tub was superb, adding so much depth to his character. He will continue to progress positively as the show continues.

What I Disliked:

I am not a fan of the magical elements, removing the sense of realism this show has built, even in the fantasy genre.

Overall:

Game of Thrones delivers yet another fantastic episode, unsurprisingly. You would be hard-pressed to find a show more tautly written and produced.

As usual, it's impossible not to be impressed by the high-quality production value. Again, acting all around is solid.

While there are many characters and arcs to establish, it's remarkable how this show balances them all, with no scene or storyline feeling dragged out or unnecessary.

Locke chopping off Jamie's hand is a terrific way to end this episode, leaving the viewer wanting more as soon as the credits roll.

What I Disliked:

The brothel scene and subsequent scene with Tyrion, Podrick, and Bronn were jarring and unnecessary. It seemed like padding compared to the rest of this one.

17 March 2022
Jon meets the King-Beyond-the-Wall while his Night Watch Brothers flee south. In King's Landing, Tyrion wants a reward, Margaery shows her charitable nature, Cersei arranges a dinner party, and Littlefinger offers to help Sansa. Across the Narrow Sea, Daenerys starts her journey west.

There are a couple of noticeably contrived moments in this one. Firstly, when Ghost saves Sam as he's about to be killed by a walker. Secondly, when Cersei leaves Tyrion's chamber right as Bronn and Ser Merrin are about to faceoff.

One can't help but feel slightly underwhelmed after season two's incredible cliffhanger - the army of the dead. While by no means a weak opening scene, it doesn't quite have the hook I was expecting.

Overall:

Game of Thrones opens its third season with a great episode - a promising sign of things to come. One can only surmise this season will get even better from here.

Fargo: S2E10 "Palindrome" Review - King Cadmium
16 March 2022
Following the motel massacre, Hanzee goes after Ed and Peggy.

What I Liked:

The cinematography is solid, and each scene perfectly implements its well-crafted and memorable music score. On top of that, each actor gives a strong performance.

Mike Milligan received the perfect conclusion to his character arc. Rather than killing him off, he instead is given a promotion in the corporal world, a reward at face value but not what he wanted or expected.

What I Disliked:

Hanzee's character arc is poorly executed and entirely hamfisted. He assumes the identity of a character who appeared just twice in the first season and, on top of that, saves and recruits Mr Wrench and Mr Numbers in what was an entirely hamfisted scene overall.

One can't help but feel slightly disappointed after the last episode's enthralling cliffhanger - the faceoff between the Blomquist's, Hanzee, and Lou. As this never occurs, it feels ultimately anti-climatic, and instead, we have to witness Peggy hallucinate. Also, just a side note, what happened to Karl and Sonny? Or Charlie?

Overall:

Fargo doesn't quite stick the landing with its sophomore season finale, but this is still a pretty good conclusion to a great season, if slightly underwhelming.

Fargo: S2E9 "The Castle" Review - King Cadmium
14 March 2022
Peggy and Ed agree to follow through with their plan at the Motor Motel, Lou faces jurisdictional politics, and Hanzee reports back to the Gerhardts.

What I Liked:

The pacing of this episode allows for thoroughly engaging and rarely dull viewing. It is a testament to how well-structured and tautly written this show has been so far.

The cinematography is solid, and each scene perfectly implements its well-crafted and memorable music score. On top of that, each actor gives a strong performance.

Hanzee has become perhaps the best character this season, having killed those who mocked him in the bar and then Dodd, and now Floyd as well. His character arc has been terrific thus far.

What I Disliked:

What was the point of the UFO? Its only sole purpose in this episode appears to have been to distract Bear so that Lou could shoot him. It was unique, but it seems more like a deus ex machina than anything.

Overall:

Fargo delivers perhaps its best episode this season, a fantastic and highly enthralling viewing experience, leaving one wanting more as soon as the credits roll.

14 March 2022
Ed and Peggy hold Dodd hostage in a secluded cabin and try to strike up a deal with the Gerhardts, while Hanzee attempts to hunt them down.

What I Liked:

The cinematography is solid, and each scene perfectly implements its well-crafted and memorable music score. On top of that, each actor gives a strong performance, especially Jeffrey Donovan.

Hanzee has become perhaps the best character this season, having killed those who mocked him in the bar and then Dodd. His character arc has been terrific thus far.

What I Disliked:

Each scene with Peggy is noticeably uninteresting, especially compared to the other storylines this season. She is not likable or intriguing enough to warrant the amount of screen time she receives.

Dodd not killing Peggy after freeing himself made absolutely no sense. Why would he keep her alive and allow her the chance to attack him? Plot armour?

Overall:

Fargo comes through with yet another high-quality episode. One can surmise we are leading toward an epic climax & conclusion.

13 March 2022
Lou and Hank investigate in Fargo, The King of Breakfast visits Betsy and Molly, and Bear questions a family member's loyalty.

What I Liked:

The cinematography is solid, and each scene perfectly implements its well-crafted and memorable music score. On top of that, each actor gives a strong performance.

As the gang war intensifies, each scene involving the Gerhardts and the Kansas City Mafia becomes tenser and tenser, making for some highly enthralling television.

Mike killing the Undertaker is perhaps the best scene to this point. The way he is introduced and then executed was ingenious by the writers.

What I Disliked:

I am not a fan of several editing choices, particularly the usage of split screens, which appear superfluous at best.

The philosophical rantings from Mike are starting to become forced and trite. He is still an interesting character, but it seems the writers are trying too hard to make him an intellectual thug.

Each scene with Peggy is noticeably uninteresting, especially compared to the other storylines. She is not likable or intriguing enough to warrant the amount of screen time she receives.

What I Disliked:

The final scene of this one was noticeably contrived and somewhat hamfisted. Ed leaving the lights turned on while dismembering the man he killed felt unrealistically careless, akin to Peggy's behaviour in the premiere.

Overall:
