The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)
Better than most Illumination movies
This movie is undeniably better than the live action one to me. Even though the plot can be basic and fast, I had a decent time watching this movie. This animation is really good but that's not saying much. I can tell Jack Black had a blast voicing Bowser for this movie. This feels more like a Mario movie than it did with the live action. I liked that Luigi tried to cheer up Mario after what happened in the dinner scene, and the battle they had with Browser is well done. Though not much is explained with Peach's backstory. Some of the references to other Mario games like the Rainbow Road scene and the powerups. Not much happens with Mario's journey to find and stop Browser. The commercial of Mario and Luigi at the beginning was a nice touch and adding elements that older fans can point out like the theme song of the Super Mario Super Show. This movie is overall a fun time to watch for fans of Mario.
Violent Shit (1989)
The title is aware of itself
This is hardly a movie to be honest. The whole plot is just some guy killing anyone who steps into the forest he's in, some parts are just filler so this movie can be above an hour long. Most of the movie is very bad frame rate and random effect filters added sometimes, who did this? Each of the victims in this movie are only there for five minutes or more before they get killed, and I don't have the ability to care for them since they're not interesting, and they barely talk for most of the movie. There's one point in the movie after one or two victims die, the killer collapses to the ground, and the camera guy decides to spin around the forest, cutting to a shot of some church, what was the point of that? There's one scene in the movie where there's a crucified Jesus Christ in the middle of the forest for unknown reasons, and the killer decides to cut him open and goes inside of him, just why? The ending of this movie is just the killer collapsing to the ground again while giving birth to a baby and the killer dies, WHO WROTE THIS MOVIE!?
The only positives I can give is the gore effects with the kills, and at least some scenes have a backstory of how the killer became the way he was, but they also make no sense. This movie is not watching for me, but if you're a fan of old independent straight to video horror films, don't let me stop you from watching this.
An American Tail: The Mystery of the Night Monster (1999)
Plainly alright
I don't like that they changed Fievel's character into being afraid and not willing to risk his life for this movie. Tony's girlfriend is still nonexistent since the previous movie. Fievel Goes West is still a dream. The animation feels like an 90s animated tv show as you expect from a low budget straight to video sequel. Every new character and stuff that happened from the previous movie now never existed. There is one scene with Chinatown, there's a Chinese mice family that's offensive from their looks and the way they speak, wear, and the music during that scene, and Tony also said, "Fortune Cookie crumbles!!", during him talking about what happen in Chinatown. The villain's motivation was explained for less than 10 seconds. The overall plot is basic and one of the weakest in these movies.
There are some errors with the animation like a character disappearing for a frame, or a character stuck in position, or talking without their mouths moving, during the very beginning of the movie, there was a shot of the outside panning down, and there is a visible white line scrolling up in the shot during the panning on the whole left side of the screen, bad design.
There are some positives like the song "Who Will", it kind of slaps without the lyrics especially the final part of it. The message of facing your fears is not bad for kids. Nellie Brie is the most epic journalist in any kids' media ever. At least the villains did some evil things. It's an alright finale to a film series. I wasn't frustrated watching this movie, but I wouldn't recommend this if you're looking for quality.
