Dao ma zei (1986)
A Cinematic Exploration of Ecological Mysticism in Tibet
Tian Zhuangzhuang introduces us to a film set in the untamed and remote landscapes of Tibet, featuring non-professional actors who captivate audiences with vibrant colors and an intriguing format. Through his creative prowess and adept handling of sound and visuals, Tian establishes a direct connection that transcends the challenges of the narrative. The main character, a horse thief ousted from his tribe and local customs, including Buddhist death rituals, embodies an ecological mysticism proposing a fresh dynamic between humanity and nature. Thus, the blend of audiovisual elements, encompassing music and exquisite cinematography, evokes a profound emotional response to the harsh reality of an intense struggle for survival. This struggle, reminiscent of the Eastern tradition where vultures aid in carrying the souls of the departed, simply persists endlessly.
Nomadland (2020)
Silent Journeys and Uncharted Realities
Nomadland, directed by Chloé Zhao, falls within the thematic continuity of her previous works by exploring the lives of modern nomads in the United States. The film stands out for its grounding in reality, drawing from Jessica Bruder's book, "Nomadland." Zhao maintains her preference for silent and marginalized characters, with Fern, the protagonist, embodying this inclination. Despite its visual impressiveness, the film diverges from Zhao's prior works by portraying Fern as an unchanging character with opaque motivations, marking a significant shift in her narrative approach.
The film delves into the vastness of landscapes, using nature as a mirror for the characters' psychology and isolation. While the cinematography and visual presentation are noteworthy, some critics express reservations about the dramatic integration of these elements. Nevertheless, Nomadland stands out as a notable cinematic work of 2020, with Frances McDormand delivering an exceptional performance that elevates the film, positioning it as a gem within contemporary cinematic production.
Hana-bi (1997)
Flowers of Fire: Takeshi Kitano's Poetic Violence
Kitano, known for his versatility as a director and actor, explores violence within the yakuza and the police, providing a melancholic and reflective perspective on existence. The plot follows Nishi, a policeman facing his wife's terminal illness and his best friend's disability, leading him to leave his career to care for her. The film delves into themes of friendship, love, and death, skillfully combining violent moments with reflective pauses. Symbolisms such as painting, fireworks, and the sea illustrate the beauty and fragility of life. Kitano employs a poetic visual language, using ellipses and flashbacks, solidifying "Hana-Bi" as a moving fusion of violence and tenderness and establishing Kitano as one of Japan's prominent filmmakers.
Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey (1993)
Takes me back to childhood
It's not even a real review, I just want to say how much I appreciate this movie, because it takes me back to my childhood. Those beautiful years of life. It's one of those movies that becomes a safe place, the perfect movie to watch when you're having a bad day, when you just want to remember how beautiful your life was back then. The landscapes and the beautiful music are only a complement to everything else and not to mention the animals and their lines, which are the most remarkable; Also, the meaning of friendship and loyalty alone make it one of those very enjoyable family movies and perfect for a cold day along with some good snacks.
