Death Proof (2007)
Am I The Only Person Who Liked This?
I don't understand the vitriol directed at QT for this movie. It's not that bad! First, the negatives - it's nothing like a grind house movie, yes, OK, the girls' conversation gets a little boring at times, and it has ego stamped all over it.
But the positives - awesome cars, awesome use of these cars, a thrilling car chase with a woman clinging to the hood, a memorable bad guy, great music! QT seems to have a foot fetish, and loves strong, hard, alpha females. He also thinks that everyone under the age of 40 spends most of their free time getting wasted! This isn't a bad thing, he's built movies around this before, it just comes across as a little clichéd in this one.
Overrall, not QTs best one, but not every director has a 100% unbeaten record. Didn't David Fincher fall off with "Zodiac"? Now THAT was a boring movie!
Zodiac (2007)
Sent Me To Sleep
For the first time ever in my life, I was seriously thinking of turning this off before it ended.
I drifted in and out of consciousness, not because i was tired, but because of how boring this was.
I cannot believe how dry, dull and drawn out this film was. It was like one of those reconstructions on "FBI Files" or something like that.
Where was the atmosphere? How about some kind of plot woven around the two hacks? I wasn't expecting a sensationalist telling of the tale, just a bit of the filmmaker's craft to enjoy.
And this was from the director of Seven...
Hostel: Part II (2007)
Muddled
This sequel was a disappointment.
We learn more about the workings of Elite Hunting Club, but this serves no purpose. There is a very inventive torture/murder scene in the first third of the movie, very long and played out Ingrid Pitt tribute, but after that, only random snatches of gore.
The three girls are totally 2D, the only bearable one was rich lesbian Beth. Bijou Phillips's character was like someone who failed an audition for Clueless! The geeky one doesn't bear talking about.
The two American clients...unbelievable. Why, and how, could two guys like that get involved with EHC? Oh, we were wrong about them, the nervous one was really the psycho! The fact that EHC makes all it's members commit a murder and get tattooed is good enough to show that they keep their existence secret, but what about all the hangers-on, the villagers and visitors who didn't get kidnapped? You couldn't have a production line of kidnapped tourists like that, about 40 a week, without the authorities coming calling.
It's details like this that spoil the movie. They whack the geek over the head then watch her float face down in the river - I thought they were meant to keep the merchandise alive? And the ending - completely cut off any tension there may have been in an instant. Why didn't the boss just accept the payment and kill her? And beheading his daughter? For one, that girl couldn't have swung a big axe like that and knocked her head off in one. Secondly, surely Sasha would have been mad as hell and come looking for her? Worth watching for horror and gore fans, but don't expect to be blown away.
Land of the Dead (2005)
Disappointment for Zombie fans
I expected big things from this, but was very disappointed.
Released as a 15 in the UK, it was totally lacking in gore, which might have made up for the poor script and just plain stupid characters.
John Leguizamo was the only good thing in this sprawling mess, he turned in a sterling performance. I mean, how stupid can people be? The guy on the skateboard, smoking weed, yeah right, like you'd do that with zombies about! Dennis Hopper's character has a bag stuffed with money, and people are shopping in a mall. What good is money in a post-apocalypse? Heavy handed political comment added more dumbness, along with the decision to show children at the end about to get chomped with their parents. It's OK, they're the rich folk, don't feel bad! The only memorable scene was the dead lurching out of the river, and Asia Argento was quite hot. Zack Snyder wiped the floor with Romero with Dawn of the Dead, the old man should have stayed retired.
Respect to GR for basically inventing the zombie genre as we know it today, but I'm afraid he reached his nadir with this one. A sad finale.
Maniac Nurses (1990)
Good Fun!
Watched this with my wife one night, she doesn't normally like trash type horror movies. It's a little bit trashy, a little bit gruesome, a little bit sexy, but doesn't go full on for any of these things.
Lots of girls in sexy nurse outfits, stockings on display, someone gets mutilated on an operating table, there's a "hunt" in the woods, the usual stuff.
It's not as bad as people are making out, I mean what do you expect with a title like that? Obviously influenced by the Ilsa movies, also euro porn, it's worth watching if it's on, but I wouldn't pay much money for it! Oh, and Ilsa's daughter is seriously hot!
