The Lost Girls (2022)
So hard to watch. I really tried, too.
The best thing about the film is the movie poster. The supporting cast is stellar, but it gives false hope for a good story, well told, to unfold...and that just doesn't happen. Instead the great cast shines a harsher light on the awkward acting of the writer-director-star. It seems like a case of someone who knows a lot about filmmaking but possesses none of the artistry. Good editing could have helped, but it was not the case -- the pace is just too slow and lingers on the main character in ways that advance neither the plot nor the feeling. It seems like she didn't want to cut scenes because she was too attached to the creation of them. She should not have cast herself. Maybe there is an ideal role out there for her, but this was just disappointing. The special effects were awkward as well. So not only does the story twist a beloved tale into something sick, but the telling of it hinders the exploration of an idea that could have been impactful if told properly. Make up your own story based on the poster and description. You'll be much better off!

Inspired to learn more!
Stories based in history, when I feel connected to the characters, inspire me to look things up and find out what is fact and what is fiction. Good films are art that evoke feeling, and this was a beautiful example. Watching during the first evening of Kwanzaa, as a non-African American, I celebrate this brave soul & hope the film inspires many who might otherwise not have the opportunity. Thanks to all involved in its production!
Mamma Mia! (2008)
Love, music & a good story conquer all
First and most importantly: Those ABBA people are great songwriters. The storyline is compelling, good-feeling and tugs on the right heartstrings
enough to overcome the disappointments which mostly involve the casting of well-known and well-loved but non-musical performers in musical roles. Further casting issues: actors who are older than the parts they are playing and a lack of chemistry which kept me from believing the story.
BUT, and it's a big BUT, if you love someone enough, the way I love many of these actors (especially Pierce Brosnan--hubba hubba), it doesn't matter if their singing makes you cringe
it'll pass. And if you love a song enough, you'll keep watching even when it's not being performed by your favorite performers. And in the case of the movie's end credits--it's TOTALLY worth it.
The moral of the review: a good storyline and well-written, much-beloved songs can overcome almost anything!
Fall (1997)
Self Indulgent
Did you notice that this film is written, directed and produced by the unlikely star? In what other world would a marginally attractive funny little taxi driver ever have a chance to steal a supermodel from her rich and attractive husband?
The poetry was the last straw. Self indulgence to the extreme.
Mr. Schaeffer must learn to walk on the right side of the fine line between boldness and believability. In "If Lucy Fell" he wrote himself a more believable character: the quirky best-friend turned true love of Sarah Jessica Parker.
As the man hot enough to tempt a happily-married supermodel, he does not quite make it. Even if this plot were to happen in real life no one would believe it--including the lovers themselves.
I must admit I saw the film in Sri Lanka courtesy of HBO Asia, where all sexual visuals were removed. This didn't hurt the fine writing of "Sex and the City", but perhaps this piece of work can't stand up to the same test.
If his real life comes anywhere near his fantasy life, he's one fortunate fellow.
