Before release I was actually expecting this movie to flop in comparison to Into the Spider-Verse. Upon release I was pleasantly surprised by just how highly rated it was, and while I was going to watch it anyway and was very excited, the ratings it got raised my hopes.
I was not disappointed.
The first and probably most obvious point in it's favour is the gorgeous animation. It's so artistic, fluid, and the artstyle compliments it so well. Second, the soundtrack is great. Both the OST and Insert songs suit each moment perfectly and easily boost each scene. Third, the characters, new and old, are so interesting and fun. The character development each of the characters returning from the first movie (Miles, Gwen, Peter) is so well done and realistic. The new characters are just as energetic and interesting as those from the first movie. Only thing I dislike regarding the characters is the lack of Spider-Ham, Noir, and Peni. Although they were teased to appear in the next movie so maybe this critism isn't so strong.
I think the one thing that holds it back from the first movie is that it feels a little incomplete since it's clear that this is a part 1 to a 2 film sequel to Into the Spider-Verse.
In short this movie surpassed my expectations and is a perfect first half to Beyond the Spider-Verse (which is going to be absolutely incredible)
