Manchester by the Sea (2016)
Easy to sum up in one word but I'll do better
Wow is all I can say when I see all these 5 star ratings for this movie. It makes me wonder about the sanity of this country. I kept looking at reviews until I found one that agreed with mine. It was a close call. Firstly, the acting was good, the directing was also good, and no glaring goofs, so what is there not to like? The reason for the movie, that's what. I can already hear everyone screaming at me. I guess it boils down to the reason I view movies. This movie was so real and so negative and nasty that it completely turned me off. Why would I want to waste 2 hours and 15 minutes of my life to watch a movie, which to me, has no redeeming qualities. It's a negative picture of life which is all around us, each and every day. I like to escape into a movie and I will admit that is getting more difficult every year. Also, I admit that I did not finish this movie. I made it through about 65% and I knew at that time that I had wasted enough of my time with it. That being said, I know that this review will not dissuade anyone from watching it, but you have been warned.
And here is a PS.....If you want to watch a really good movie which you might have missed, watch this 2014 hand clapper and heart tugger: "Chef". It will neutralize all the negative junk of "Manchester"
Everyman's War (2009)
A movie to pass the time with
Well, I don't have the minimum of five lines to write a review but I am going to write it anyway, so there you are. The acting appears to be of a high school play - C- at best. Someone should have told someone that guys in the army don't speak with perfect diction and grammar. Also, someone should have told someone that the ammo belt for the machine gun should have been loaded with 30 cal bullets which had bullets loaded into the cartridges. They should not have used blanks! You can't kill krauts with blanks. Anyway, you can pass the time with this movie while you are eating popcorn; just don't expect much. Well, I guess I made it past the 5 line minimum.
Take Shelter (2011)
Ending
I gave this movie a 7 but if the ending had been different I would have given it a 10! The ending was totally inadequate. More poetic license should have been used. The ending IS real in the movie and not a dream as the girl and wife are seeing what he is seeing and the scene is treated in that way as opposed to how the dreams are treated in the rest of the movie. However, as I said, I would have been much more dramatic with the ending, after all it is fiction, right? I would have stayed on the scene of the storm out to sea and have the water spouts grow exponentially, doubling every couple of seconds and getting progressively larger and finally combining into one gigantic mega spout and a 1000 foot high tsunami coming ashore and the camera now above Myrtle Beach and panning back as the wave totally destroyed the entire city. That would be an ending worth the rest of the movie!
