Don't Worry Darling (2022)
Just nothing original here.
Not as bad as everyone is saying, but it's not great. It just rips a lot of other movies and tv shows off, like The Truman Show, The Stepford Wives and even Wanda/Vision. Nothing is original and there are some major plot holes. The ending scene with Chris Pine and Gemma Chan makes no sense. It's also hard to take Nick Kroll serious. I see why Shia LaBeouf was originally cast as Jack. He would have excelled at that role. Harry Styles was just miscast unfortunately.
The highlight though was Florence Pugh. She gave a fantastic performance. I also thought the original score was really good along with the cinematography.
Prey (2022)
Better than most Predator movies
Enjoyable, but small movie. Definitely felt like a streaming movie. The scope was small and not very cinematic. But it's quick paced and fun. I loved the setting and idea of this movie. The actors were enjoyable and the action scenes were fun. Better than most Predator movies.
Bullet Train (2022)
A Guy Richie knockoff.
A Guy Ritchie knockoff. But it was still enjoyable enough. Brad Pitt is very charming. Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Brian Tyree Henry steal the show, however. They are the best things about the movie. The action is surprisingly pedestrian for a David Leitch movie. I was expecting more with it. Also, Joey King's character is absolutely terrible. She almost ruins the movie with one of the worst characters I've ever seen in a movie. Luckily, by the end they fix it. Again, just an ok movie.
The Gray Man (2022)
Shockingly Average
Average action flick. The script is not very interesting. No action scene really stands out. The two leads are very entertaining however. I think the PG-13 rating holds it back. Watch on a day you're bored or sick.
Nope (2022)
It's fine. Wish it was better
It's fine. I was expecting something a little more mind-blowing like Close Encounters. Nothing new that you haven't seen before. But the score and cinematography are awesome. KeKe Palmer was incredibly annoying. I'm not sure if her character was written that way or that she's a bad actress, but it borderline ruined the movie.
The Bob's Burgers Movie (2022)
Not better than the show.
Pretty enjoyable, but it's really no better than the best seasons of Bob's Burgers. All the characters get something to do. And there's so really good cameos.
Hustle (2022)
Sandler is great, but the movie is not.
Adam Sandler is fantastic in this movie. You really believe his character as a burnt out talent scout that wants to be a coach. However, this movie is not very good. The story is a complete cliche. Also, it looked like an excuse for NBA players to try to be actors. They were all TERRIBLE! It completely takes you out of the movie. Their acting is so bad! Sandler and Queen Latifah have zero chemistry. He has way more chemistry with Heidi Gardner. Maybe it's the SNL connection. Overall, it's not a good movie, but Adam Sandler is great in it.
Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
Too short. No time to breathe.
You can tell a lot was cut from this movie. It moves too fast for any emotional beat to land. It's a shame, because Christian Bale gives an amazing performance, but he needed more screen time. Hemsworth is good as always. Portman and Thompson have surprisingly little screen time as well. Russell Crowe seems to be having a blast. Kong is in the movie too much. He's better in small doses. Some of the cgi is really bad. Overall, movie is too short. I would have loved to seen a 2h. 30 minute version.
Elvis (2022)
Baz Luhrmann is gonna Baz Luhrmann
I ended up liking this movie much more than I thought I would. Baz Luhrmann is going to Baz Luhrmann. Everything is quick cuts and crazy over the top. Tom Hanks completely bought in to the process I guess, because he gives a ridiculous performance, but it grows on you over time. Austin Butler keeps the whole thing together. He's great as Elvis and anytime he's on stage performing the movie is electric! Definitely worth a watch.
CODA (2021)
Terrible remake
After all the Awards and nominations that this movie received I was expecting it to be actually good. Boy was I wrong. This was derivative schlock. If you can think of a movie cliche this movie probably has it. The screenplay feels like it was written by a 15 year old. Does every movie with an angsty teen have to have dreams of being a singer or musician? Is that rule now? I would have been more interested if she wanted to be a radiologist, or zookeeper, or an astronaut. Literally anything else! And I know that music is more convenient for a story about a deaf family, but come on, is this supposed to be Mr. Holland's Opus 2: Electric Boogaloo? By the way, the singing is laughable. I was embarrassed watching it. Plus the acting was pretty poor. I'm not really sure how Troy Kotsur is getting all this award attention. He overacts. Trying waaaaay too hard at comedy. Fart jokes and sex jokes really aren't my thing. The only redeeming thing in this movie is Eugenio Derbez as the choir teacher. His performance is actually interesting unlike every other actor in this "film". My final note, the actress playing Ruby's best friend Gertie is 27, but playing a high school student. It's so distracting, because she looks every bit of 27.
Jurassic World Dominion (2022)
Wasted the original cast.
Nothing about this movie felt like Jurassic Park. The original had a sense dread. People were in actual peril. Characters actually died. This was so boring. You never felt like anyone was in danger. Everyone had plot armor. Some scenes were unintentionally hysterical. The original cast seems to be having a lot of fun. I just wish they were in a better movie.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
That third act! Wow!
Yes, the script isn't great. Yes, the dialogue is cheesy and sometimes cringeworthy. But wow, that third act was awesome. The practical effects in the combat scenes are some of the best ever put on film! Congrats to Tom Cruise for delivering edge of your seat entertainment.
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (2022)
Lost the magic
This franchise feels like it's lost the magic. Nothing about feels exciting or magical. The plot is extremely confusing. There is also very little action in this movie. Its really slow. The only plus side is Jude Law. He does give a good performance in the movie. He's a good Dumbledore.
Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers (2022)
Wasted Potential
I loved the idea of this movie, but unfortunately it just didn't get executed well. The biggest problem is the script and Kiki Layne's performance. Both are terrible. Clearly Disney didn't have the guts to make another Who Framed Rogger Rabbit and went with something more that 10 year olds will like with low hanging fruit jokes. Definitely won't hold up like that prior masterpiece. Such a shame. Plus it seemed like they were making fun of the fall of the original Peter Pan voice actor Bobby Driscoll. Yikes.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
At least it was different than the usual MCU stuff.
I appreciate that Sam Raimi was allowed to be 70% Sam Raimi on this film. The movie felt different than the typical MCU movies. So, that was enjoyable at least. Doctor Strange's wig is just as bad as ever. You think they'd one day get that right.
Everyone here seems to be having fun. But the plot is a complete mess and makes little sense. Scarlet Witches motives are a bit misogynistic. Focused purely on the obsession of her fake children and not the other hundred traumas she's endured. Also, the Illuminati are a complete waste. They do a few actors very dirty. I hope they come back in different MCU movies as proper characters, but I doubt it.
The Northman (2022)
A Mystic Viking Hamlet
A great Viking epic shot on location without distracting green screen. What more could you ask for? A story of revenge and betrayal. Has a very Hamlet feeling to it. I love the use of mysticism in the film. It reminded me of Excalibur from the 80's. All of the cast play their part well. Nicole Kidman was a surprise in a role unlike anything she has done before.
Be warned. This is 100% a Robert Eggers film. Do not go in thinking this is like Gladiator or Game of Thrones. You will be very disappointed.
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (2022)
Very enjoyable.
Nicolas Cage and Pedro Pascal have great chemistry. The first half of the movie was a great sendup on the Hollywood machine and how unforgiving it is and what it does to an actors mental state. The second half gets a bit formulaic. It involves a pointless kidnapping side plot. But all the actors are clearly having a great time. If anything I wanted it to be even weirder and more extreme.
The Lost City (2022)
I wish more jokes landed.
Pretty generic action rom-com. Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum have really good chemistry, it's just a shame that they were let down by a boring script. Most of the jokes fell flat. The theater was uncomfortably silent throughout most the whole film. The jokes that did land came mostly from Daniel Radcliffe. It was great to see him in a big popcorn movie again. It's unfortunate that the extended cameo by Brad Pitt was ruined in the trailers. That was one of the highlights of the movie. Once he's gone a lot of the energy in the movie is gone. Romancing the Stone this is not.
Morbius (2022)
Ever hear of character development?
This movie clearly was destroyed in the editing room. It is so choppy. The movie makes no sense and neither do the character motivations. It's just a bunch of random scenes thrown together to make what kind of looks like a movie. A one point two characters with no previous sense of having romantic feelings begin to make out. It was so dumb. There are plenty of unintentionally funny scenes, mostly involving Tyrese Gibson and his terrible acting. The end credits make zero sense. A fair amount of people booed at the end. The only interesting part in this whole movie is watching Matt Smith chew the scenery.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
You won't see a more original film this year!
This film is so creative! It's really a film about family and love, but told in a way I've never seen. It has so much heart that it'll have you grinning and tears in your eyes all at same time. All the performances are fantastic. You can tell all the actors are having so much fun. Michelle Yeoh can definitely carry a film. She's was great. It was great to see Ke Huy Quan back in a film again. He does a lot of heavy lifting in this one and honestly deserves a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination. Jamie Lee Curtis literally lets it all hang out, and you can tell she's having more fun in this movie than any of the new Halloween films. The only negative thing I can say about this film is there is an image that is blurred unnecessarily. I highly recommend this film and hope it's remembered in awards season.
King Richard (2021)
Oscar Bait.
These are the worst kinds of biopics. It exists solely to help someone win an Oscar. The funny thing is, is this isn't even a good Will Smith performance. He's been better in so many other films. In this one you can see he's trying really hard to show you he can act. It doesn't feel natural and takes you out of the movie. Also the Williams sisters are portrayed like Stepford children. They are not given any real personalities. It's a very formulaic and paint-by-the numbers biopic. Done a thousand times before.
Nobody (2021)
Really fun!!
Watching Bob Odenkirk try new things is always fun. The story is pretty basic. A retired "cleaner" comes out of retirement after being pushed too far. The action scenes are so fun. The bus fight is the best fight scene of 2021. It was really impressive. And watching Christopher Lloyd become an action star at age 83 was hysterical to watch. Just a really fun time at the movies!
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)
Mired by terrible cgi and choppy editing.
The story overall is fine and typical with the MCU. Simon Liu is likable as the title character. He definitely has charisma. Michelle Yeoh and Tony Leung are both welcome additions to the MCU. And having Ben Kingsley back was great. He steals all the scenes that he's in.
Unfortunately, the cgi was terrible in this movie. It was so distracting. I wish things were shot on location. The green scene backgrounds were so obviously. The bus fight scene was boring because you could tell they were on a set with cgi roads and buildings in the back ground. The fight scenes are poorly edited and choppy. They are not coherent at all. And of course Awkwafina was miscast. She needs to stay away from movies.
Nightmare Alley (2021)
A pretty good remake.
It seems like most people don't know that this is a remake of a film from 1947. The plot follows the original pretty closely. The atmosphere and production design are fantastic. It's very moody and noir. Del Toro always has a great eye. Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, and Willem Dafoe are all standouts. Bradley Cooper probably gives a career best performance. It's sad that he didn't receive and Oscar nomination. It's worth a watch, but I also recommend seeing the original!
The French Dispatch of the Liberty, Kansas Evening Sun (2021)
Not Wes Andersons best
While it's beautifully shot and has some good performances, this is one of my least favorite Wes Anderson films. I respect that this is his love letter to Magazines like The New Yorker, I just didn't find it very interesting. It was slower paced than most of his other films and it turns out that's not a great thing. Benicio Del Toro and Jeffrey Wright were the standout performers in this one. Also, Anderson films usually have a great score. This one was very forgettable.
