Winchell (1998 TV Movie)
A great true story for the people
13 March 2002
Warning: Spoilers
The movie "Winchell" starring Stanley Tucci is based on the true story of Walter Winchell a famous journalist in the 1930's and 1940's.

We see brief periods in his youth, including how he got hurt badly by a horse, eventually this incident would give him the skill to read lips (he sees his mom talking through a glass about him and reads her lips).

From age 20 he got a job writing newsprints although many of his prints were lies against his friends.

Then in 1929 in New York , Winchell get a bigger job writing "Winchell's Column" ,this time though writing real news column on everything from politics, to gossip.

Including his print on Robert Bellamy a producer who with another executive are having affairs behind their wives back.

Glen Miller "Stardust" pg 2 5 senators and 2 congressman drinking from a bathtub that where a young hooker is naked in.

Winchell wanted to expose these crooked politicians, but his boss (caring more about the interests of the politicians) tells Winchell not to publish the story ,however he does manage to get a date with the young girl who was in the bathtub.

This girl ,Dallas Wayne, eventually ends up working for Winchell, uses her beauty and charm to get information.

The info he is seeking is on someone named Vincent Coll and another politician Winchell suspects is cheating on his wife.

This story is also killed by his boss, who is obviously getting a money from these politicians and who doesn't have the guts to expose.

Winchell gets a radio job from a wealthy tobacco company to cover news for both the rich and poor, adding his brash of humor and honest into every broadcast.

For instance in one of his funny broadcast , he remarks how "every mother's first child, is her husband."

Soon Winchells loud and honest sense of journalism gets him very popular and powerful and soon everyone, from politicians to music performers is asking him for favors, like a Godfather in a way.

Then he starts to investigate other people like Randolph Hearst who is having sexual relations with a young girl.

Hearst would eventually hire Winchell for his radio program and column.

Winchell caught the eye of an aspiring writer named Herman Klurfield.

The movie is based on the novel by Herman Klurfield "Walter Winchell:His Life and Times".

Klurfield shows up to his office to hear his Boss beat up on Winchell verbally:

but Klurfield defends Winchell astoundly with these words

Then Klurfield gets a job with Winchell, being the head writer for him.

What elevated Winchell from a good journalist, to a world renowed journalist would be his report on who tried to kill Fraklin D. Roosevelt.

With the help from his friend Herman Klurfield and Lawrence Newman whom he question the shooter ,Joe Zangara, after Winchell threated to expose how his daughter was in a sanitarium.

His outspoken, brave, and truthful words against Adolf Hitler would elevate Winchell into a patriot. He describes Hitler and Nazis as: "The Tyranny that destroys from the top down", and how "the memory of a people oppressed is always longer than the road to glory."

Winchell being a Yiddish man, knew Hitler was killing many Jews , yet this wasn't covered by the press until after Hitler took over poland.

Winchell describes how Jews were often drag from the beds and business and taken through the night by German soldiers.

Then as a true patriot Winchell describes how the US "Our country stands for freedom, tolerance, and the dignity of man", totally opposite of what Hitler and German stood for during WWII.

In fact , as the movie depicts he meets Franklin Roosevelt ,played by Christoper Plummer, and Roosevelt admired him because he was the reported who answered to no one, which was one reason many people admired Winchell. He did speak for the public on many levels, and he had the guts to do so.

The movie then tells the events of WWII how Roosevelts says how the US was attacked by Japan in Dec 1941 "A date that will live in infamy".

Winchell served in WWII as he stationed in Brazil and yet managed to speak out against Hitler and Mussolini.

The movie then chronicles the famous Josephine Baker incident which would damage Winchell's reputation even though his reputation was solid. Baker was singing at the Apollo Theater in 1951,where she got a generous review by Winchell.

Everyone thinks Josephine Baker, a highly respected singer was honest, but the movie reveals how she and the NAACP lied about Winchell being a racist, because she didn't get served at a restaurant by a white waiter.

Winchell was in the same restaurant, but he didn't see what was taking place, if he did he would have done something about it.

Finally, the movie chronicles Winchell's alliance with Joe Mccarthy and how he tried to set up people to make them look like communists, which they weren't.

This would prove to be the nail in the coffin for Winchell.

There are other noteworthy scenes in the movie like when Winchell talks to Mayor Laguardia that how his column "showed you into office and and his column can show h=you out again"

A tremendous movie that you have to see because it will open you're eyes to the world of dirty politics, dirty journalism, patriotism, doing what you believe in and much more.

Tucci would win a Golden Globe award for best actor for "Winchell".

Director Paul Mazursky does a good job here, and Fried Films production, the production behind the movie.

Winchell is a piece of American History that hasn't really talked about until now.

Highly recommeded.

Houseguest (1995)
Houseguest is a great comedy for the whole family
12 March 2002
Phil Hartman and Sinbad star in Houseguest a 1995 comedy about what happens when one stranger pretends another person's best friend and the close relationship these two form even after the truth is revealed.

Phil Hartman has starred in great movies like "Blind Date", "The Coneheads" , and "Jingle All The Way", but this is probably his least seen movie although it's a funny one.

Phil Hartman plays Gary Young, a young executive who has problems with his wife and young kids . Hartman dislikes his boss but doesn't have the guts to stand up to him.

Sinbad plays Kevin Franklin, a guy who has yet to pay a debt to the mob for $50,000, Instead of paying the debt, Franklin goes on the run and proceeds to impersonates one of Young's best friend, a dentist named Derek Bond. Young hasn't seen Bond in a long time, so he has no clue what Bond looks like. Franklin does a good a hilarious job of fooling Young that he is Derek Bond. In one instance, Young invites Franklin to a party and asks him to look at the teeth at one of his guests, a beautiful young woman. When this beautiful woman starts to smile, Franklin sees she has lost a couple of teeth, and responds "Oh!!! Geez", it's a funny scene that had me laughing. Pretty soon Franklin starts showing Gary Young's guest how to boogie and dance, using the black soul in him. I enjoyed this moment, because although the movie doesn't state it, part of it's enjoyment is the togetherness of the black culture of Franklin with the white culture of Young. When both guys starts partying together, we see both white and black people can exist together in peace. Anyhow, more fun ensues as Franklin is asked to perform an important dental procedure to an old friend of Young, and proceeds to do utterly stupid stunts with great results. Franklin then bonds with all the kids of Mr. Young including Jason, Joey, Sarah Young. In one scene, he takes the kids to play basketball against a couple of young bullies and he and the kids proceeds to beat up these kids playing tough basketball. The kids love Franklin with all his warmth and humor, than even at the end when they find out his real name it doesn't matter, because they know he is a good guy.

We get more laughter close to the end, as the Young family helps Franklin get rid of the mob idiots that are following him. By the end of the movie Young, is a totally different, he is more secure and confident, thanks to his best friend, that he stands up his boss and becomes closer to his family. Only 2 people reviewed this movie, so that tells me, that alot of people still haven't seen it. I recommended this great movie to everyone

Fantasia (1940)
A great timeless masterpiece for the People and Kids
12 March 2002
Made in the 1940's "Fantasia" is nothing short of a monument as a sign of great Filmmaking.

As the movie cover says, "This extraordinary blend of magnificent music and animation is an exhilarating sight and sound experience".

I couldn't describe it better myself.

The movie starts out as an elegant musical performance that is lead by Conductor Leopold Stokowski and The Philadelphia Orchestra.

He explains every piece you hear will hear in this fantastic animated feature.

There are works by John Sebastian Bach, a great German composer such As Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, The Rite of Spring by Igor Stravinsky, The Nutcracker Waltz by Pyotr Tchaikovsky , famous Russian composer that is recognized all over the world, all accompanied by great Disney Animation.

There is also a segment featuring Mickey Mouse as the young apprentice who is trying to measure up to his Master who is a powerful sorcerer, but Mickey has trouble just taking control of a broom to clean his daily chores. As he tries to take control of it, he causes more trouble and fun for the viewing audience.

We also get a fascinating look into the Prehistoric Age billions of years ago when Dinosaurs roamed the earth. You're kids will find this part exciting because Disney presents many Dinosaurs such as a Brontosaurus, Pterodactyls and even a Tyrannosaurus Rex. All the movements of the dinosaurs are wonderfully animated by Disney. The artists really capture their presence.

Disney would use their beauty animating Dinosaurs `In The Land Before Time' movie series.

Another great scene is where the conductor introduces In the soundtrack of the picture and produces to indulge in the many instruments and their sounds such as a harp, trumpet, violin and many other instruments.

I would explain more of the scenes but that would take away from the anticipation of those people who haven't watched this film in years.

There is a new version of Fantasia called `Fantasia 2000'

Which includes new scenes and a computer restored version of the film.

Whichever version you watch, it will be a viewing pleasure you won't forget.

A must buy for Adults and Kids.

This movie brought back great memories of when I was a kid, and now looking back at this movie, I can appreciate what Walt Disney did in creating this timeless movie.

Samurai Jack (2001–2017)
The People and The People's Champ love Samurai Jack
26 February 2002
Samurai Jack features some of the most Stylish, and breakthrough animation ever made.

Dan Krail background artist for Samurai Jack believes that pen and pencil and not computer animation is the real way do do cartoons and animation. I agree with this statement.

This cartoon is simply amazing and best yet it's something that both adults and kids can enjoy!!!

Japanese animation , for example, in the last 20 yrs has been done entirely by hand.

Audiences have a greater appreciate for the artists when they see that have created these blockbuster animes by hand and didn't use shortcuts such as a computer for their work.

That doesn't mean a computer is not helpful for this, it certainly is.

But using a computer might take away the realistic facial expressions of a character. This is most evident in movie like "Final Fantasy: Spirits within", where the characters faces seem too rigid and obtuse.

Scott Hills-Background paint artist. "Looks better by hand", "Intense color"

Samurai Jack's voice is not done by a Japanese or Asian actor as you might expect but by a black person. Phil Lamor, best known, for his stint in Mad Tv (A Mad Magazine sitcom).

AKU's voice is done by MAKO.

SOUND-Asian theme with tecno- Jim Venerable "Each world has tone different ethnicities" In fighting scene, this innovator lets "the sound run the emotion" and not the music.

He provides an example of this, with a scene in which Jack battles one of Aku's robotic spiders.

Visual effects impressive unlike anything you've seen unless you've watched Japanese anime.

INTRO TO MOVIE---

Movie aired twice in the summer (about August) then repeated a couple of weeks ago.

Samurai Jack's father is talking to Jack about Aku and how this evil being destroyed his village.

Through gorgeous paintings we visually see all this taking place, it's rather ingenous.

Jack's father then tells Jack how 3 monks helped get an special sword that would rid the world of Aku.

After he tells the story, Jack's father leaves him, and Jack (looking cute as a kid) practice his swordsmanship and acting brave, feeling inspired by his father.

However, just as Jack is doing this, we see the image of Aku come back to life!!! He has not been defeated, he has been temporarily stopped.

The message here is that evil cannot be ever destroyed but controlled.

Jack's father tries to protect his son, but is captured by Aku. Jack's mom takes Jack to safety and hearing a special message from Jack's dad prepares Jack for Aku (he is just a kid but Jack will be trained like a man- not only to take care of himself, but to rid of all evil in the world)

Jack's mom leaves Jack with a close relative (an uncle) who takes Jack under his wing, and here for the first time, we see beginning of the adventure that the young Samurai will take!

The cartoon appreciates all types of cultures, this is evident by Jack trainig.

Jack is trained by Egyptioan warriors, and in one great scene an African warrior.

This is great scene in which both fight each other with spears, and just when the African warrior looks like he is going to beat Jack, the little warrior counters with a move of his own.

The scene is also accompanied by a culture like tone that reminds of these special tribes in Africa which train warriors to protect their village.

He learns archery with Robin Hood.

Vikings.

Later when Jack is ready to complete his training, he meets his mom (now in her old age, yet she looks very dignified) hand him the special enchanted sword which was used by his father to rid Aku from the world.

This is also a visually stunning scene. We see a Buddha like statue with a great closeup of Jack with his sword looking proud.

Jack then sets on his quest to find Aku and destroy.

He finds a mine that is been run by Aku's minion and that they are using villagers as slaves for the mines.

He finds his father who is one of the prisoners in the mines.

Eventually we learn more about Aku and Samurai Jack and are treated to an amazing adventure as Samurai Jack tries to stop the reign of evil dooers and Aku.

The People's Champ and Great Critics highly recommend Samurai Jack.

The people love it, and it's sure to be a cult phenomenen in no time.

The Rock's and Peoples review of this great Natalie Wood flick
26 February 2002
Warning: Spoilers
3 Oscars including best screenplay, story and best supporting actor for Edmung Gweng for playing Kris Kringle.

20th century originally rejected the idea for the movie several times even though stars like Maureen Ohara who plays Doris was already interested in the movie.

Thomas Mara Jr. has a great line "because my Daddy told me so" which completely annihilates the evidence opposing attorney has against Kris Kringle.

However, judge Henry still demands authorative proof to show that Kris Kringle is really Santa Claus.

In perhaps the most memorable scene in the movie (there are quite a few) the post office delivers to the courtroom hundreds upon hundreds of letters that prove that Kris Kringle is Santa Claus.

This is one of the best movies ever made, and Natalie Wood gives her best early performances in history.

The Perfect Movie
2 February 2002
Directed by Wolfgang Peterson who has a career for making a legendary name for himself and reached into the hearts of millions of kids and adults by making "The NeverEnding Story". Petersen has also made Blockbuster films like "Air Force One", "Outbreak", "Enemy Mine."

The perfect storm, based on the book by Sebastian Unger,is the true story of a group of fisherman who ,during October 1991, died in the middle of the worst storm in the century, sacrificing their lives because they were simply doing their jobs to feed their families.

The movie is one of my top 50 films of all time next "The Last Picture Show" (which I reviewed) in that all the characters are real, the movie's heartpounding excitement and suspense is above anything I have ever seen, and above all the movie has an aura about that makes it special due to the heart of all the characters.

The crew is made up of Billy Tyne, the captain of the Andrea Gail, Bobby Shatford ,the most popular and loved fisherman in Gloucester, Micheal "Buggsy" Maron, Dale Murphy,David "Sully" Sullivan.

They knew everyone in town and everyone in town loved every one of them, especially Bobby Shatford, as the documentaries on the dvd, which has reactions from the townspeople , reveal.

To take care of their families, the fisherman go to the Great banks to catch fish but they don't realize , Hurrice Grace, a raging storm is combing with 2 other storms that will completely destroy everything in it's path.

What I liked about the movie is it's many message. One message is that whether it's a giant corporation or a small fishing company, there will always be a greedy jerk who will put profit above human lives.

Billy Tyne's boss, Bob Brown (played by Michael Ironside), the owner of the boats they use to fish for him, is the biggest jerk you've ever seen. He doesn't care one bit about his workers or they blood and sweat they put in their jobs.

Here the message is whether it's a small fishing company or a big corporation, greedy individuals like Bob Brown will always exploit his workers.

Then one of the characters you'll grow to love is Christine Cotter, Bobby's girlfriend, played by the beautiful Diane Lane, who calls the fisherman who went during this storm "Heroes".

Cotter doesn't necessarily want Bobby going out to sea, she has a bad feeling about the whole thing, but Bobby just can't let it go, because it's a big job, and above all Bobby loves to fish.

Which is another message about the movie, how these men love going out to the sea and fishing. It's a love /hate relationship.

They hate the pay they get from it, but they love the adventure of going out and doing it.

The crew also has a love/hate relationship with their Captain Billy Tyne played by George Clooney who very well might have jeopardized the crew lives during this storm.

See Tyne, gets a message about the storm, but instead of thinking about the safety of his crew, he kind of forces them to finish the job at all costs.

All the characters have a story to them, and each characters have alot of heart.

The visual effects for the movie is unprecedented, it is a very large scale production that hasn't really been done before on this magnitude.

The movie was a box office hit, and received critical acclaim for all those involved inclding Clooney and Walhberg, who was sick during the filming of the movie.

You also have award winning special effects by Stan Winston and ILM , the same crew who did the effects for "Terminator 2", "Jurassic Park" and many other top movies.

The perfect storm is filled with many bonuses that make it a perfect buy and a perfect movie:

3 Documentaries one by HBO called Creating the Storm which has interviews with Bobby Shatford's family, including Rick Shatford, the real Linda GreenLaw ,the Sword Captain of the Hannah Bohden. and former Captains of the Andrea Gail, and interviews with local fisherman who know all about the characters involved.

Then there is another documentary called "Witnessing the Storm" which has actual photos from the storm in 1991, including interviews with former captains of the Andrea Gail.

Then you have commentaries for the film itself including commentary by the author Sebastian Unger who recalls how afraid he was in how his book would be received, and then how good he felt when the families of the fisherman told him how good a job he did with it.

As he puts it, "That was important than the books sales, the movie or anything else."

Combine the visual effects, with a great story, a good cast, a legendary German director, and lots of heart and you have one of the best pictures of the year.

I'd put this movie at least at #12 for the top pictures of all time, for it's tremendous heart in the characters.

The Great Peoples movie
2 February 2002
Having been a medical assistant in many hospitals, I can tell you that is one of the first films that depicts what it's like to be in a state hospital.

Even though the movie is over 20yrs old, it has still me thinking about the patients in these hospitals.

Directed by Milos Forman ,One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is about an ex-convict named Randall McMurphy, played excellently by Jack Nicholson who fakes insanity to get into a hospital to avoid trouble from the law.

Little does McMurphy know that this hospital will more trouble for him than the prison he was in.

When McMurphy is brought in he meets all the patients in the ward which include Mr; Martini played by Danny Devito (in his film debut) ,Christopher Lloyd who plays Taber (also in his film debut), Billy Bibbit the stutterer played well by Brad Douriff.

McMurphy thinks life is going to be swell in the ward but when he sees everything the patients have to go, including obeying the rules, not watching the World Series, drinking medication, and being told what to do day in day out, he starts to cause trouble.

The hospital is partially run by Mildred Ratched who is the head nurse, and who plays the villain of sorts in the movie.

When McMurphy is fed up with the rules and verbal abuse of Miss Ratched he decides to take matters into his own hands and decides to take the patients out of the ward and experience things in life, they haven't experience before.

I don't know if I want to reveal anymore because there are many people who haven't seen this picture in years.

I myself haven't seen it for over 10 yrs until I saw it on DVD.

But I will mention things on the DVD that are not on the VHS that will definitely get you're attention.

The DVD provides a complete history of the film including how it won 5 Academy Awards including Best Picture.

The DVD also has biographies of the cast and crew which include Jack Nicholson Louise Fletcher, Michael Douglas (who coproduced the film). Milos Forman , Danny Devito, Scatman Crothers who is best remembered as Louie from the "Chico and The Man " show with Freddie Prince in the 1970's.

This is just a superb film that is very important if you want to study filmaking, but on top of that it takes you inside these hospitals and shows you things you wouldn't see if you visited these hospitals on an ordinary day.

A must see.
