Ukigumo (1955)
Greatest movie of all time
I have seen many retrospective classical and modern era films directed by Miyazaki, Takahata, shinkai, kon, oshii, ozu, Otomo, Hosoda, Kurosawa, Mizoguchi, but none of the films has reach me at that deeper like these films. This film is the epitome of filmmaking or what is like to be get inside of deepest of human heart. Name any Hollywood or any other international movies that has made such deep impact like this film. Generally Japanese movie has profound respect for human condition, these film touches the soul, it's like gem among the gems. Please watch and feel to its truest essence if possible.
Kaguya-hime no monogatari (2013)
Deepest Film ever made by Mankind
So there are 6 film I considered to be greatest made which are Floating Weeds , Tokyo story , Late Spring, Floating Clouds , Princess Mononoke and this film.
The film is filled with so much of clarity and deep introspection never seen before and application
of such a gorgeous artwork to diffuse the illusion of reality and explaining the phenomenon of happiness and suffering in this world , yet so spiritual and real by heart. I had never see this much honest film about human condition .It touches the deepest soul of humanity and what does it mean to be a human. Takahata mastery lies in to portray the subtle nuances of mundane life in exact manner which intrigued the audience and they can simultaneously contemplate with protagonist , as we are not seeing the films but are with them and fill the details with our own imagination like great master Ozu. The tale of yanagawa canals and Only yesterday also carries such subtle themes and gentle contemplative peace in their narrative , yet so full imbued with reality.
Seeing the film one will ask themselves what is reality itself , what is subjective experience of mundane and what does it means to be a human or why are we here ,yet not in a way which other films do but a sense of mono no aware .
Joe Hisashi also use his profound gift of music which is in my opinion , the best of the century pieces to be heard. This story is enigmatic you will not be able to understand that much, what kaguya is feeling or what she was going through or you may resent her , but thats how this film began to started, just as takahata stated , he didn't even understand what she was going through. Tale of genji is another example.
Paku San had delivered his greatest masterpiece and swan song , which will be remembered for millennia as philosophy , used to the infinitude.
Japanese are greatest in there storytelling because after you see one of their film , it became part of your life as you began to ask yourself deepest question objectively and subjectively contemplate as a mix of Shintoism and Buddhism .
