The Shadow Riders (1982)
Good Western
Good, old-fashioned western with two golden age actors, Ben Johnson and Harry Carey Jr., from the John Ford and John Wayne movies. Of course, Tom Selleck, Sam Elliott and Katharine Ross also know how to act and provide some entertaining characters.
Next, Dominique Dunne provides some interesting vignettes. Her homicide/murder soon after the movie was tragic and deprived us of a promising career. The movie is based on a Louis L'Amour western with the same name. The movie is good, but the book is much
better. The character Colonel Hammond (Gene Evans) is a sailor and gun runner in both, but he is also Kate Connery's relative in the book. This is a major area where the movie deviates from the book.
R.I.P.D. 2: Rise of the Damned (2022)
A fun movie for a Friday night.
The origin story of Sherriff Pulsipher, his death, and first case with the R. I. P. D. Richard Brake did a good job of displaying Pulsipher's arrogant and cynical character, as was was seen in the original movie. His acting was superb. He partners with Jeanne, who has been on the job for over 400 years. The villain was played by Richard Brake who did an excellent job. Although the best acting and most laughs were found in the two avatars,Rachel Adedeji and Evlyne Oyedokun. They are two relatively new actresses, who were the highlight of the movie and worth every minute of screen time when they saw. I hope to see more of them in the future. It's not a blockbuster but worth the time.
Paint Your Wagon (1969)
They make their own rules in a wild, gold mining town.
The songs, hilarious dialogue, and great acting make this a wonderful movie. It's unusual to see Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin in a musical, but it's still a western. They are partners in gold mining and gambling. Ben Rumson (Lee Marvin) buys Elizabeth (Jean Seberg) from a passing Mormon (John Mitchum) who is happy to get rid of her since Elizabeth hates the other wife. Elizabeth takes charge of the two partners to get the things in life she wants, but doesn't interfere with their gold mining, drinking or gambling. Their unorthodox marriage goes through challenges as the town grows. When a parson and a religious family arrive, Elizabeth wants respectability, so Ben moves out. Ben, naturally, takes the religious family's son under his wings and introduces him to the finer things in life, that one can only find in a saloon.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
Acting was superb
A middle-aged Chinese woman, Evelyn Wang, (Michelle Yeoh) runs a laundramat and conflicts with everyone around her: her father Gong Gong (James Hong), husband Waymond Wang (Ke Huy Quan), daughter Joy Wang (Stephanie Hsu), IRS lady Deirdre Beaubeirdre (Jamie Lee Curtis), and customer Debbie the Dog Lady (Jenny Slate). During the middle of an IRS audit she encounters an alternate version of her husband from the Alpha universe who tells her that she is the hero who will free all reality and all other universes from the evil Jobu Tupaki. Unfortunately, Evelyn is the version
of herself who had made all the wrong choices in life, unlike other versions in other universes. She must learn from her other versions, in order to defeat Jobu Tupaki. The acting and conflict between Michelle Yeoh and Jamie Lee Curtis is outstanding. Although, in a distant universe that are friends, and maybe lovers. In this universe, Evelyn Wang seems to bring out the worst from
those around her. Actor Ke Huy Quan hasn't made many movies since he delighted us in the Goonies (1985) and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984), so it is pure delight to see him again. Evelyn Wang learns love and compassion from a version of Waymond Qang (Ke Huy Quan) in another universe, which becomes the secret to resolve the conflict with Jobu Tupaki. The acting is superb, the photography average and the special effects confusing. But the actors and plot lift the movie above the ordinary.
