Lockwood & Co. (2023)
Didn't read the books, the world of Lockwood & co is so promising
The set-up of the world in this series is well done and we kinda understand how it works quite fluidly, except for a few things. It's a very intriguing plot line and definitely promising!
The teenage perspective is a bit annoying, how old are these characters? The 'talent ' being active when you're young made the story believable, because otherwise, it is quite weird to see such weird responsibility balance between adults and kids. This doesn't forgive the fact that the adult characters were all falling short and too stereotyped ( except the skull!!).
The characters are inconsistent and fail to be believable. Some scenes feel inconsistent. Their relationships also evolve way too fast without basis ( I guess in the book they maybe had more scenes of bonding) only by the last episode can we better understand the dynamics and really call them a trio. The actors really did well despite some dialogues I found weird or inconsistent. I think it's a balance between drama and humour that still needs tweaking... I loved the trio actors ! Lucy is played so well even the first episode we witness her growth in a fluid way.
I absolutely loved the music ( especially the original song!) and the visual mood is spot on.
I wish there were more episodes or less focus on the main intrigue to know the characters and that world better.
I am giving it an 8 because I want to know lockwood's secret in season 2 ( s1 ends in that moment reveal )but I guess I can read the book otherwise lol! In all honesty, I think the first season is a great start for this series and best wishes for a second season it's very promising!
Cunk on Earth (2022)
Fresh humour, sarcasm & absurdity. Not for everyone
It's the first time I watch a mockumentary, and the first time I see the character of Philomena Cunk. I love sarcasm and it's been a while since I've seen something this funny!
Within the first minute of the first episode, her humour sets the tone brilliantly! You obviously have to play the game with unexpected questions and far-off conclusions. Yet, in all the fakeness, you can find a gem of satire on all topics.
Although you won't learn much, as some would use that to undermine the series, I think that's the point of a mock...
Some have said it's meaningless, so If I would ask myself why this piece of work exist, beyond just jokes, i think the art of satire and the absurdity genre are great ways to bring important questions about our current world. I think That's why many people have enjoyed this show, and sarcasm in general. All this grand talk about civilization was brought in a mockery to reflect on our current era and the relevance of history.
This series had great lines overall, even if I found a few just weird.
Some experts reacted brilliantly as well. They had to take the host as seriously as possible.
What could have been better:
I wish there were more episodes, and I would have hoped for a less western-centered focus... although they do criticize this themeselves.
I wish the experts had time to talk a bit more , but it showed that it was really not the point of series !
